To not understand why people pay for sky?

CanAnybodyMakeSenseofThis · 26/04/2013 22:20

Due to technical issues, I'm running my tv through an old sky box I found in the loft. I don't have a subscription so can't watch any of the sky channels. However, I can see the listings.

It's so much poo it's unbelievable. Why do people pay for this?? Are they mad?

and we watch Animal planet discovery etc etc you dont get that on freeview, and we did have freestat for our caravan but when DH was tuning it is a german porn channel popped up and all my then 10yr old could see was a womans arse sticking up in the air with somebody shouting ANAL ANAL Shock

sweetestcup · 27/04/2013 10:20

We dont have a laptop. The on demand service for channels including I player etc are all available through Sky now anyway, just seems easier to me. Cant get freeview anyway but it hasnt the same channels, very limited range of HD channels and range of music channels poor.

mrsjay · 27/04/2013 10:21

yes there is all the 'players' on sky now it is great you can download films or boxsets if you want,

NettoSuperstar · 27/04/2013 10:28

I got it for the F1 and wouldn't be without it now.
I love my Sky.

TolliverGroat · 27/04/2013 10:41

Bunbaker, rugby union isn't on the BBC (except for the World Cup and possibly a couple of other things I'm overlooking). Premiership and European rugby is split between Sky Sports and ESPN at the moment (with one hour's highlights weekly on ITV) and is moving to BT's new sports channels next year. Not sure about Rugby League, though - I know I've seen some international matches on Sky but domestic stuff might be on BBC.

Bunbaker · 27/04/2013 10:46

rugby League is, and it is big round here. OH follows Huddersfield Giants.

cocolepew · 27/04/2013 10:54

We pay £63 for it including our phone and broadband. We only recently got sky movies in. We got it half price for 3 months and sky sent us a letter yesterday saying they are giving us it half price for another 3 months.
It works out cheaper for us rather than buying a DVD or going to the pictures.

Fluffy1234 · 27/04/2013 10:59

Because I love my Sky plus box so much and never ever have to wSte time watching adverts.

LimitedEditionLady · 27/04/2013 11:06

Because despite living in the South East of England and not halfway up a remote mountainside, we had minimal television reception and no access at all to Freeview until last year's digital switchover. Plus we like sport and also like the option of avoiding the X Factor/Strictly/Britain Has Fuck All Talent type shyte that passes for prime time viewing on the terrestrial channels.

Also, I don't think it is bad value at all when compared to the cost of any other sort of evening out.

TeWiSavesTheDay · 27/04/2013 11:22

Because when our area switched over to digital we had so crap it might as well be nothing reception.

We'll go to freesat eventually I imagine, but we watch loads of things on sky so it will be missed.

ChocolateCakePlease · 27/04/2013 11:31

We had sky for a year and thought it was a waste of money. Our subscription came with movies at first and my god what a waste of time. The same films repeated constantly over and over again, waste of time and money that is. We got rid of it when our contract was up and used the dish to set up a freesat box which is fantastic. My dh misses sky adlantic but that is it, we do not miss anything on sky at all and freesat has everything we like and it has more channels than freeview does too.

The only thing I could see someone wanting sky for is sport.

ChocolateCakePlease · 27/04/2013 11:33

Forgot to add also we can record etc and set up series link on our freesat too.

LondonMan · 27/04/2013 11:35

I have to have Sky sport, it' very cost-effective to add movies, once you go for those two I don't think it's possible not to have the channels that are actually comparable with free ones. Given that I have those channels, I watch them far more often than free ones. The only BBC program I watch is HIGNFY, apart from that the only freeview channels I regularly watch are channel 4 and its variants, but I watch them much less than Sky Atlantic alone. So the evidence is even if you exclude sport and movies, Sky's programs are still better than Freeview's.

(I thought I never watched ITV, but I now recall there have been three series I've watched in the last 20 years.)

KatieScarlett2833 · 27/04/2013 11:35

cardibach · 27/04/2013 11:51

No terrestrial TV reception at all.
There are some really good series on Sky.
I don't go out much, and even if I did, Sky works out cheaper.
I like it.
Enough reasons for you OP?

ChestyNut · 27/04/2013 11:53

No watching adverts.
Never missing something I want to watch.
Pausing so I can grab more chocolate.
Revolution
The following
Criminal minds
Touch
Grimm
The walking dead
Beauty and the beast
Bones
Greys anatomy

Need I go on...Smile

GetOrfMoiLand · 27/04/2013 11:58

Sky movies and anytime.

Plus it's convenient.

And it's only fifty quid a month which is a negligible amount to me.

gordyslovesheep · 27/04/2013 12:01

Chestynut and I have the exact same taste in TV Grin

I love watching rubbish films as well - I like Sky

NettoSuperstar · 27/04/2013 12:04

I love the True Movies channels, I watch them far too much, and the cooking channels.

badguider · 27/04/2013 12:05

We don't have sky but have cable mainly for films on demand and catch-up which is basically like almost unlimited box sets (we don't watch a lot of live tv).

SignoraStronza · 27/04/2013 12:13

MIL had it soley for Eurosport, so that she and dh can watch the moto gp without their blood pressure rising at the useless BBC coverage.

SpanishFly · 27/04/2013 13:21

I'm astounded at how many people think freeview/freesat is the equivalent of Sky. They have none of the channels we watch - sky1, Living, Atlantic, Fox. None of them.

mrsjay · 27/04/2013 13:22

has true movies moved netto i cant find it
