To not understand why people pay for sky?

Due to technical issues, I'm running my tv through an old sky box I found in the loft. I don't have a subscription so can't watch any of the sky channels. However, I can see the listings.

It's so much poo it's unbelievable. Why do people pay for this?? Are they mad?

I couldn't live without my American criminal channels.
NCIS ( I'm in love with Gibbs)
Criminal Minds
CSI wherever
Bones
Without a Trace
Law and Order SVU
And there's always a repeat of Father Ted, or The Big Bang Theory or even Friends. And Miss Marple and Poirot too Grin
There is always something you can find and as the main terrestrial channels seem to consist of soaps, soaps and more soaps, especially early evening when I settle down to watch, which are so utterly miserable ,and I hate, I'm just glad I have such a huge choice.

I think I would prefer Murdoch to do without my money.

Also, I have mate who passes anything on anything I really want to see (Game of Thrones).

My brother pays a small fortune for the very best premium sky (whichever package that is). But all I would watch on Sky is Game of Thrones and I can wait until it comes out on dvd anyway plus the books are better.

Yea, it's a bugger it's Murdoch.
But as I said upthread it's Sky or nothing up here, and I need my telly.
What can you do?
Thinks about crochet...
Nah, give me Gibbs anyday,

Because the (usually) man of the house watches the football and that is an essential unlike things the woman wants to spend household income on which are just frivolities.

FFS Waffly, I'm stuck singing that fucking advert until I drift off to sleep now!

People really should give more thought to the offense their MN names might give Hmm

Football. Cricket. Sky Atlantic. Nick Jr. All completely worth it.

considering all the programmes are on the internet I don't see the point.
When I looked into sky, the cheapest package for things dp at the time wanted was about £60-£80pcm. Unless you're sitting watching tv all day every day, then it's not worth £700 a year, I can think of better things to spend that amount a month on.

We spend about fifty a month. We live where there is poor reception. We get the TV in hd, broadband, phone rental, unlimited calls (day and night on landline) we can download boxsets on anytime and get catch up. The broadband is fast and unlimited. We were given a tetra box which holds something ridiculous like 1000 hours but it means we have whole seasons recorded and stores.
And the programmes...the following, game of thrones, spartacus, Dexter, walking dead, sky arts, svu, documentaries etc make it worthwhile for us.
I resent paying the bbc more than I do sky...I can't think of the last time I watched anything on any bbc channel.

We bought the basic entertainment package for Sky Atlantic, Fox and Syfy. DH was desperate for the F1 channel and being able to record all the different shows has been great. I love Sky+!

Report
LtEveDallas · 27/04/2013 05:51

I'd forgotten the SyFy channel, so many great programmes on there too. My Sky+ is almost full with all the series I save and then don't watch for ages. I can't remember the last time I watched 'live' TV.

I'd rather pay for Sky than the TV Licence. I never watch BBC (or any of the other things the Licence pays for). Does annoy me that you cannot opt out.

Sport

Would rather watch it on the BBC like in the old days but they spend our money on other stuff which I don't want to watch.

I don't pay for Sky and have no plans to either. If i want to watch TV, I'll watch it in the background in work. Otherwise I don't watch TV at home - if I do, i just watch Iplayer on my laptop which I don't need a tv licence for :)

I'm afraid we have the lot including sky go! It costs a bally fortune! Dh has had it for sport ever since he could afford it. If we were in our uppers it is the last luxury that would go. I agree it's shite but you can't get the cricket anywhere else (well other than an hour of test march highlights on channel 5). The children love boomerang (scooby doo & wacky races). I could live without it but do love the middle, modern family and mad men.

I think everyones viewing habits are changing.

We record most stuff and I do like Sky for that because it's so easy. I would sooner record the whole series of something like 'Call the Midwife'
and then watch it all in one go when it suits me.

Sky Atlantic is good, but YANBU

We watch Game of Thrones, Mad Men and Walking Dead but there is almost nothing else worth watching and we spend nights scrolling through several hundred listings before concluding there is nothing on and wondering what we pay for

I was paying stupid amounts for virgin, and apart from Animal Planet and Discovery, we only watched freeview channels or the Catch Up. So I rang and negotiated, still pay for phone and Internet but got freeview channels and catch up free through the virgin box.

Sky Sports. I couldn't watch England play cricket without it. For me it is worth it for that alone.

Sky sports and my recent discovery of Sky Arts. Brilliant. I also think Sky plus is brilliant.
My DH has just put Sky Go on his iPad and iPhone for no extra charge so he can now watch anything wherever he is which seems brilliant. Not sure how many devices each household can have SkyGo on, but I'm going to see if I can get it on my iPhone too. If you do have Sky look into it - really amazing service

There is a huge amount of crap telly broadcast via satellite, however there are also some really good shows that hubby and I like to watch, especially on living, sky1, sky Atlantic. We rarely watch them live and use the sky+ or sky+anytime features and then fast forward through the adverts.

Ok so it costs us nearly £50 a month, but that's out main source of in-house entertainment and we can easily afford it, so I see no problems in it. If we were really hard up then we would have to think about cutting back, but not at the moment!

Free sat, freeview and regular tv reception is utterly shite where we live so sky is a necessary evil. Broadband speeds aren't good enough for I player etc either
Trust me we watch only about 10% of the channels and grind our teeth about the cost ....
