AIBU

hair dyed in candy colours looks bloody stupid on grown women.

OP posts:
aldiwhore · 23/04/2013 14:38

I've never dyed my hair, I'm not dull. My best mate dyes her hair all the time, she's no more interesting than me.

The point is, I don't dye my hair, because I don't want to. She dyes her hair because she wants to.

And that, is all that matters.

I don't really see what all the fuss is about personally.

If someone likes Boden, so what?

I loathe the fact that certain looks have become a kind of uniform, so perhaps there is validity in the argument that some people do some things to fit in with people who they think are like them?

But then, whatever you do or wear someone else will have done the same.

Meh. Do what you like. I don't believe AGE should ever stop you doing something you want to do with your own body.

Fillyjonk75 · 23/04/2013 14:39

^I don't care. I have no issue with people having rainbow hair, piercings, tattoos or dreadlocks. Or other body modifications.

I do have an issue with people being sexist, racist, ageist, discriminatory against those with physical or mental disabilities, being bigoted, or extremely judgy.^

THIS.

ConfusedPixie · 23/04/2013 14:42

YABU. I've had purple in the past, it was awesome. I used to have varying shades of orange and red until a year or so ago when I stopped dying it. I didn't think I'd get a nanny job with bright red hair no matter how cool it would have looked Grin

VerySmallSqueak · 23/04/2013 14:44

MrsJoe you look fantastic!

cassgate · 23/04/2013 14:55

Well I am currently bright red and I am 42. I have been various shades of red, brown, black ,purple, orange since I was 18. When I got married 5 years ago I had black hair with a pinky red fringe. I also had a purple wedding dress. I have short hair always have had so I like doing different things with the colour. Only one disaster when I was young when I had highlights. Looked like a tiger never again. I am always getting compliments about my choice of hair colour and short funky styles. Each to their own.

imour · 23/04/2013 14:59

yanbu looks ridiculous on older women with their grey roots growing out .

CelticPixie · 23/04/2013 15:13

YABU people can dye their hair whatever colour they want. Mine is a shitty brown colour right now, but I am thinking of dying it burgundy or red.

ZZZenagain · 23/04/2013 15:18

don't mind pink if the skin tone goes with it but hate maroon/orange. Too clown like for my taste.

mrsbugsywugsy · 23/04/2013 15:39

I had purple hair at university 15 a few years ago. this thread is making me nostalgic and wanting to do it again just to annoy judgy people

I also want to get my belly button repierced, I lost the piercing giving birth to dd

ArtemisKelda · 23/04/2013 15:46

YABU. I love having multi coloured hair, it's fun, I enjoy it and it doesn't harm anyone.

EmmaBemma · 23/04/2013 15:48

"All adornment is saying something."

True, but sometimes it's just saying "I really like blue hair". My own hair colour is a relatively muted red but I really can't understand why people get their knickers in a twist about this. Why should we all look the same?

ZZZenagain · 23/04/2013 15:50

I think young skin can carry this off best. Same with bleach blonde, it is harsh on older skin and shows all the flaws but it can be ok with young skin and I think bright, unnatural hair colours work the same way.

EmmaBemma · 23/04/2013 15:53

I dunno, I always loved Zandra Rhodes' pink hair. I will do something like that when I go proper grey I think.

Good grief if it werent for the fact that I know Mumsnet hasnt been going that long I would think I had stumbled into a 70s archived thread. Are you wearing a twinset & pearls?

Really 2013, this bothers you?

Hair is either good, or its not

It either suits someone, or it doesnt.

There is no excuse for badly conditioned hair whether blond or blue - other than that its just personal taste isnt it?

If I see someone with unusual hair and it suits them - I just think "oh that looks nice"

A while back I saw a girl with purple hair and black fingernails and thought how much it suited her colouring.

BlueSkySunnyDay · 23/04/2013 16:16

Oh and im a boring blonde, red is far too high maintenance for me (and it makes me look like I have jaundice)

cassgate · 23/04/2013 16:16

imour - Not sure if I would be classed as an older women at 42, but if you have your hair dyed professionally or even doing it yourself every 6 weeks like I do no one sees the grey roots. I would be totally white if I did not dye my hair. My natural hair colour before grey set in was dark brown but I havent been that colour since I was 18.

diddl · 23/04/2013 16:19

I have dark brown hair & put red on so that the greys go pink!

BlueSkySunnyDay · 23/04/2013 16:21

I was trying to use the colour me beautiful book to decide what colours I am....slight problem I think I am a soft/cool but its so long since I have seen the natural colour of my hair I cant remember exactly what it was like.

catsrus · 23/04/2013 16:42

scarlet I think your hair is beautiful - and I'm almost 60 with naturally grey hair, no way would I ever dye it back to its original brown - it would just look too weird with my old face Smile. Many of my older friends now appear to be "natural" blondes rather than go grey - I wouldn't want to load my head with chemicals all the time ... BUT .. I do lust after a flash of purple at the front Grin. I saw a woman my age with exactly that, grey with a flash of bright pink and she just looked fantastic - really made me smile for the rest of the day.

So you experts (judgy pants readers beware) what is the best, most natural, dye that would cope with making grey hair purple?

PS my personal judgy pants moments are around make-up, personally don't wear the stuff and rarely think it enhances a face but I'm well aware other people disagree - if people feel better for using it then they are free to do so

EmmaBemma · 23/04/2013 16:52

catsrus, I think you will look awesome with your purple streak! I initially thought "crazy color" might be for you, as its gentle and semi permanent, however I've just googled it and found out it doesn't cover greys. Hope someone more knowledgeable will be along to advise.

catsrus · 23/04/2013 17:01

Thanks emma - yes I haven't found anything that would work on purple I have been tempted to try food colouring

StuntGirl · 23/04/2013 17:01

YABVU. And judgey. And a little rude. But you already knew that Grin
