AIBU?

AIBU what's with the whole 'nethuns' nonsense?

I'm quite happily a member of both forums, I get lots out of both, but it does REALLY rip my knitting when a few on MN call it net'huns'.

Dare I say I actually find it quite an offensive term, being from Glasgow the word 'hun' has very particular connotations in a sectarian form.

I know there is a fairly large cross over of users, so why with the hate people?

How did Scotland turn into ScSmile? Silly phone!

Gah, I can't stand the 'signatures' of how many babies and how many days old they are, and how long mum has been BF for and how many days it is till her next period. I do NOT need a ticker/countdown thing for everything in your life.

Also....it was recommended by my HV. And I don't listen to anything she says.

Another young mum born in the 90s here.

Always happy to make you feel old

Thing is... Some of the mums on there make me feel old. I remember reading a thread once, hoping to maybe meet some other young mums (have since abandoned this idea...), and some of them were 15 / 16, having had their child at 13. And the problem was the same as with the young mums group I attended - everyone just wanted to talk about shit TV, or which interchangeable boy band member had cheated on which interchangeable girl band member.

That, and the colours are an assault on my eyes.

Never knew that 'hun' was a negative term, you learn something every day!

I was born in the 90's too.

I agree with SirBoobAlot.

The layout over there makes me want to gouge my eyes out too. Plus, I enjoy the sarcasm, swearing and arsey-ness here. You don't get that over there, just false niceness and a lot of shit 'advice' Wink

I've never been there, but I'm suddenly getting a urge to go over to the Pink side... sounds like they'd be awfully easy to wind up and I'm bored (and ill).

I rather like all the local information on netmums which beats MN Local into cocked hat and makes me wonder what on earth MNHQ are playing at. However, I give the forums a very wide berth.

eskino That's exactly what I expected to find there.

I cannot stand that shit.

To be perfectly honest, before finding this place, that's how I perceived most British forums. I actually thought that the average British Internet user was less sophisticated and educated than those from other Anglophone countries.

I was a young mum, I would have loved for MN to exist then.

You're right re the netmums local pages. It almost makes you wonder why MN is botehring trying to drum up local areas. I think MN is stronger as a national brand, doesn't need all these local sites. That's not what MN is about imo.

Yeah Nethuns is bad, but it's not as bad as B&B.

@ Eva Peron.

Just been over to have another look (oh my eyes!) one poster seriously has ten tickers, including an ovulation on. I knew they existed, but for some reason it's even more ridiculous having seen it with my own eyes.

And the fact they have a swear filter just makes me want to join and post swear words all over the threads.

Oh God, B&B! I forgot about that one. I used to be a regular on BC, I thought it was a lot more 'grown up' compared to netmums and B&B... And then I found MN haha!

Jesus Christ, I can't believe my post was deleted. I pointed out that the nethuns business comes from an awful lot of mumsnetters loving to flash their right on credentials but in reality being incredibly horrified when actually asked to deal with a real poor person or someone a bit chavvy or ill educated. Whenever anyone on here admits to being on benefits or living in a council house they are careful to qualify it by pointing out that they went to uni or were brought up in a middle class home.

Which is apparently 'horrible and offensive'. But then the thread moves on to take the piss out of lower class language, young mums, people who don't accept the generally accepted middle class politics of Mumsnet, the way people who have a poor education type.

But apparently me pointing out something which the rest of the thread has shown to be self evident is bad. Norty me.

Haha b&b! That was the first parenting forum I ever found and I loved it at first until I noticed the hunning that goes on there too. When I found Mumsnet I fell in forum love! I have tried recently going back to b&b as well as coming here but its too licky bum bum compared to here. If you post on here you get solid advice and get told if you are being a dick about something but on there you just get told the your baby your rules hun crap. Much prefer the straight talking on here!

nenevomito · 23/04/2013 12:28

Bridget - you were deleted for suggesting that netmums was full of poor and "chavvy" ill-educated people and you don't know why you were deleted?

Sheesh.

Even better you've written it again. Can't you see why its offensive? I'm on netmums and FWIW am not poor, poorly educated or a chav and neither are most of the people I know on there. Some of them are poor, yes, but chav no.

Report
nenevomito · 23/04/2013 12:30

Also, some of the people on MN are poor, so what's your argument?

You're criticising mumsnetters by slagging off the members of another site, doofus.
