To be a hmm about Boston victims

Photos and Memes (sp?) already appearing on FB Hmm.

It's only been a couple of hours - the man with his legs blown off us particularly offensive - he is prob still fighting for his life - his family might not know he is hurt yet?

Yet SIL just posted a picture of him with the caption "he was running for charity yet lost both his legs in the bombings" Hmm .

FFS what is wrong with people? :(

Err no, it wasn't a comparison between FB and the electric light. I was implying those who call Facebook evil or the devil's work are afraid of what they don't understand. Which I think anyone with even a basic capacity for critical thinking grasped.

LilMissSunshine9 · 16/04/2013 20:17

I've by accident seen the pic of the guy in the wheelchair where his leg below the knee is horrifically torn apart. Whilst it is very graphic it is also the reality of what happens in these incidents. This is the truth and brutal reality of the injuries caused by bombings - yes we can be shocked but to say we should not see these images is not right. How else can you really understand the brutality and horrific injuries caused in these situations if they are shielded from us because they are too shocking to see.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 16/04/2013 20:38

I can understand perfectly well that bombs mutilate people without having to see it

K8Middleton · 16/04/2013 20:48

I agree with Fanjo. We don't need every gory detail displayed for us to goggle at.

thebody · 16/04/2013 21:06

It's here, its not going away and you have to understand it and deal with it.

Technology and the Internet hasn't invented bullying or gossip or heinous crimes. They were always here. Just seen or felt by those they touched.

Now it's everyone who can see and feel and experience.

LilMissSunshine9 · 16/04/2013 21:15

Well the internet isn't and shouldn't be policed. This image just shows the brutality of the bombing and jut because people find it shocking doesn't mean it should never be shown or available to see. No-one seems to complain when there are graphic images of the injuries occurred to victims of war related bombings or I think it was the Daily Mail once had images of a row of Mexican gang members hanging from a bridge with just their faces blurred - didn't see anyone making comments about how shocking that was or how the image shouldn't be shown or detailed for people to google and see.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 16/04/2013 21:17

That is equally shocking IMO.

Sparklingbrook · 16/04/2013 21:19

I think you should have a choice whether you want to see the images, but on FB they just appear.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 16/04/2013 21:20

Fair enough if you want to look for the graphic stuff but for the papers to be awash with photos of.victims..talk of amputation and "legs flying past my head" and "bloodbaths" is totally unnecessary and distasteful.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 16/04/2013 21:22

The Daily Mail..surprise surprise..are the worst offenders here..their articles are like a particularly gruesome schlock horror film today.

I thought my dislike of them knew no bounds but felt even more hatred of them today.

FreudiansSlipper · 16/04/2013 21:26

I think what most oppose to is the lack of respect for those caught up in incidents like this

you do not need to see someone's face to be able to understand the true horror of what they have experienced

saying that no one can forget the picture of the young girl burnt by napalm but now we see so many graphic details and the press have access to all that person history far too easily and print it

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 16/04/2013 21:28

Yes..sheer lack of respect. .the news video showing the press photographers running in to take photos of the injured lying there made me shudder.

LilMissSunshine9 · 16/04/2013 21:56

Surely news reporters are there to report what is happening at the scene, that's what they do report.

They listen to what people are telling them, quote them or then pass on that information. If limbs flying in the air is what happened then why hide that truth from the people - that is what happened.

Besides all newspapers are adhere to guidelines regarding what images they can publish and if its in the public interest.

Sanjifair · 16/04/2013 21:57

Someone on my feed re-posted a pic of an 8 year old girl wearing a 5K race number, which said she had died after running Boston marathon.
This was before it was known to be a boy. And 8 year olds arent allowed to run marathons. WTAF is wrong with people that they would create and share a pic like that.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 16/04/2013 22:01

Well. If they are adhering to the guidelines then the guidelines are wrong IMO.

Stokes · 16/04/2013 22:02

It's not even about whether we find the images distressing or whether we want to see them imo, it's about the privacy of the person involved. I haven't seen the photo of the man who lost his legs, but I think that photo should have been his to share. If his face is clear, then it seems likely that at least some of his friends and family will have learned the extent of his injuries by happening on the photo online. It's his life changing event, not the photographer's. If he wanted to share the photo at some point down the line for whatever personal reason, well then fine, but to put that image in the public domain without his consent is disgraceful.

BegoniaBampot · 16/04/2013 22:05

and the media is known for its sensitivity and not breaking the guidlines of course.

HesterShaw · 16/04/2013 22:05

Back to FB, the bullying is caused by bullies not FB.

Sparklingbrook · 16/04/2013 22:09

FB makes bullying so much easier though. Sad

superstarheartbreaker · 16/04/2013 22:10

YANBU: I hate graphic images on news and facebook. Hated it when Gadaffi's murder was on youtube etc. Totally inappropriate imo. The only time when such images are appropriate are for certain types of news programmes (with warnings) and the hsitory books. I have seen some pretty powerful images in historical photo books about the war etc and even these make me upset. To show images as they happen is a bit much tbh.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 16/04/2013 22:16

Very interesting article

LilMissSunshine9 · 16/04/2013 22:28

Yes it is but then again I am not a fan of twitter nor follow anyone on it, nor do I care for Facebook because personally I cannot see the point of them getting updates about inane rubbish from people about their days etc. I'd rather just get on and live my life and if I want to know what is going on in the world then I watch the news etc. but this is life now and social media is here to stay

mam29 · 16/04/2013 22:46

I posted separate thread as dident see this one.

My cousin posted the 8 year old running for sandy hook and hubby said what loads of crap 8 year olds wouldent be allowed to run a marathon.

Shes always milking any event.

I hate the candle pics and the share because your care.

Its fake grief and caring.

was similar during the riots.

I should really defriend some people after thatcher rants and people who milk the blooming news.

mam29 · 16/04/2013 22:47

ohh not to forget sky news kept showing one bit with some bloke in background saying they all dead about 10times.
