to want to 'like' comments on threads a la FB/ news sites?

i always mentally 'like' or 'red arrow' comments as i read through a thread.. and often make no comment myself if it's been better expressed already.
i don't like at all the 'what soandso said' comment
i think it would add to the threads as there'd be some indication of popular support or otherwise of expressed views
it feels strange not to have this facility on mumsnet

I do this all the time!! Then I tut loudly at the inconverience od having to actually type a reply Grin I just mentally 'liked' your post....or is it a thread?

so glad it's not just me - also my internet connection on phone is unreliable so i never risk writing a reply as they get lost
so a like/ thumbs up or down or arrow would let me participate a bit! lurkers too whose thoughts are a mystery....

I would hate to see a 'like' button introduced.

The lack of it is one of the things that I love about MN. It means that threads get comments, not just a tick. What does an 'I like this post' contribute to any discussion? If you like it say so.

But if we do have a 'like' button I think it would be most undemocratic not to have a 'loathe' button & maybe even an ODFOD button. Grin

I would also hate it to be introduced. I don't see the benefit of liking a comment - it doesn't really add anything to the debate really.

Mind you I am not on FB so am not used to liking all and sundry.

I would be really cheesed off if it was introduced - I think it's a bit childish tbh.

well at least at upward or downwards arrow or a recommend option like the independent and guardian news sites use, sometimes i want to show my support for other comments...
what is ODFOD magimedi i tried really hard to work it out

We would also have to have a button for 'I refuse to acknowledge your post as I am offended by its lack of capitalisation and punctuation'.

I can't think of any recent examples though. Oh no, none at all.

I sometimes think this, but ultimately it's a forum for discussion, rather than acknowledgement.

There are reasons FB is good, there are reasons MN is good, there are probably reasons Nethuns is good. Let's not turn everything into FB Lite.

I must admit I find textspeak tiresome but I didn't even notice the lack of punctuation in the OP - it doesn't matter in the scheme if things I don't think.

i wondered a lot over the idea that being able to 'like' would discourage discussion but i think it's more likely to increase participation
all the news sites have a recommend button (guardian/telegraph)/ up n down arrows (independent) i don't read tabloids or gossip mags

and mumsnet is the only forum i've ever used - it could be improved by this.
i was personally horrifed by the thread 'recommend' button.
an anonymous comment recommend seems harmless and maybe a reply to function so people don't hijack threads with their own arguments

That's the bit that I would dislike - the anonymity. If you are not prepared to make a comment I don't think you should hide behind a like button.

Just thinking of the DM where all the vilest comments get the most green arrows.

i know what you mean re: daily mail - although as an aside i must admit to clicking on a link to their rabid story today about 'evil lefties and MT funeral' and all the 'top' comments were extremely good left wing points and there were upto 10,000 supporters of them! Shock

here on mumsnet there are so many lurkers and who's to say people wouldn't like others comments and then make their own

There have -never- been times when I've had abrilliant idea for an answer or comment on a thread and by the time I've come to the end, someone has already said it and it just looks lame to repeat it or post 'what X said'...it would be nice to give the poster a bit of support by giving them a virtual clap on the back if you thoroughly agree.

This is a chat/ discussion forum though, unlike newspapers where it's just comments at the bottom of the page.
Personally I don't want a like button, I'd rather comment on something that interests me and read other peoples. What would an anonymous poster putting like add to anything?
It would MN could become a very dull site indeed.
