This may sound really odd but my left breast feels funny

It feels a bit swollen and, not exactly sore, but a bit uncomfortable.

My cousin died of breast cancer last year and a bit of me is niggly worried. I've had a good feel around and can't find anything lumpy but it feels wrong somehow and I am not 100% sure how to properly check my breasts (about to google it)

I feel a bit silly about it but it just doesnt feel right. AIBU to be a bit worried. Is it too silly a thing to see a GP about? I have doctors appointment this afternoon but that's about something else and I know they hate you mentioning more than 1 issue

I suppose I'm looking for some re-assurance really

Again, I dont want to sound negative or worry anyone unnecessarily but no one in my family had cancer. I have two sisters and a brother. Both sisters have smoked for twenty years. I have never smoked but the one who had breast cancer.

I get a little annoyed when the medical profession seem to tell people not to worry if for example, no immediate family member has had cancer, dont smoke etc.

I know a lady 32 who has terminal cancer. She had breast cancer
despite no family history etc.

Women need to be aware and see their GP regardless of symptons, history etc. In many cases it will turn out to be something minor but it is always better to get every minor thing looked at.

howdoo it didn't sound bad at all x :) Good to know those tests are out there

kellank - I agree, best to get things checked no matter how low risk you think you might be

I'm more postitive today. Specialist tomorrow and hopefully some good news

Good luck cat girl - just keep remembering that far more often than not a suspect change turns out to not be cancer.

Christelle2207 · 10/04/2013 22:12

Hi, just wanted to say I got scary paIns in my breast a few months ago and was alarmed by the urgency of my referral to the breast clinic! Essentially they're on the ball with such things and won't take any chances. I got seen the following week and my pains were just hormonal. And the consultant also told me that painful lumps are rarely cancerous.
You completely and totall did the right thing.

Ledkr · 10/04/2013 22:22

I've been laying low but good luck at the clinic.
I had it 19 yrs ago at 26. Been fine since treatment.
So even if it is the worst thing it's not the end if the world.
Massive well done for acting on your instincts and so quickly too.
Fingers crossed for you.

catgirl1976 · 10/04/2013 22:29

Bingdweller · 11/04/2013 07:52

Good luck today catgirl, I'm sure you will be fine.

Don't worry about your consultant being listed under general surgery. They will be a general surgeon who specialises in breast surgery. Private hospitals (at least the one I work for) have very strict guidelines about who can/can't treat breast patients. We are an accredited breast unit which means our specialists private practice must reflect their NHS practice. In other words, general surgeons who carry out hernia repair, gallbladder surgery etc. would absolutely not be allowed to see breast patients privately as a "sideline". Feel free to PM me if you want any further info.

Hope all goes well today xxx

Glad you feel positive today catgirl. Good luck today.

I was in your position 2 weeks ago. I found a lump on the Saturday evening (like a large grape in size , texture and softness) and went straight to my gp on the Monday morning. I was shocked when she referred me urgently to the breast clinc and left the surgery with an appointment for 2 weeks later.

I was utterly terrified, petrified and kept breaking down when I looked at my children. I've never been so scared in my life!

I had my appointment on monday where they just did an ultrasound and thankfully it was just a fatty lump. The sonographer was able to tell me immediately and the consultant confirmed it straight after. He examined my breasts and I took the opportunity to ask him how exactly you should examine them at home. He showed me (which was a bit Blush) but I'll be doing it each month from now on.

I so hope yours turns out to be something similar.

Ledkr · 11/04/2013 16:26

I hope you are celebrating after your hospital visit op.

fallon8 · 11/04/2013 16:54

I have been treated for BC five times..not once did I have any pain.it is one of the many frightening things about cancer,it is a silent disease.

thebody · 11/04/2013 17:08

Hope you ok catgirl have been thinking about you all day.
