AIBU?

To be worried about my boob?

This may sound really odd but my left breast feels funny

It feels a bit swollen and, not exactly sore, but a bit uncomfortable.

My cousin died of breast cancer last year and a bit of me is niggly worried. I've had a good feel around and can't find anything lumpy but it feels wrong somehow and I am not 100% sure how to properly check my breasts (about to google it)

I feel a bit silly about it but it just doesnt feel right. AIBU to be a bit worried. Is it too silly a thing to see a GP about? I have doctors appointment this afternoon but that's about something else and I know they hate you mentioning more than 1 issue

I suppose I'm looking for some re-assurance really

Are you OK now though kellank. Catgirl's doing the right thing and has an appointment on Thursday. Hopefully we will all be quaffing wine in her honour on Thursday night to celebrate and even if we can't we will be holding her hand and looking after her.

Glad you got sorted with a quick appointment catgirl. It will hopefully save you a weekend of worry & turn out to be harmless.

Sending you good luck vibes for Thursday x

Another thing that is keeping me positive are that it's only been sore a few days and I only mentioned it as I had an appointment for something else IYSWIM and its the breast I ended up almost exclusively using to feed DS so it would sort of make sense for any bfeeding related issues to be in that breast

catgirl - sending you loads of positive vibes. I don't have any personal experiences to share, but sending lots of virtual tea and sympathy.

Both my grandmothers died from breast cancer (long before I was born), so this is one of my greatest fears. I offset it by checking my breasts regularly.

You're reacting to this quickly, which stands you in the best possible stead. There's nothing like becoming a Mum for things like this to suddenly take on a great deal of importance!

Feel free to pm me catgirl, I'm almost 3 years clear of breast cancer so have been exactly where you are right now!
Mine was obviously bad news but most lumps/swellings/soreness etc are harmless especially in younger women. I was very unlucky, 30 when diagnosed but was by far the youngest on chemo ward etc.
If its any comfort my boob didn't hurt at all.
Good luck for Thursday- is your appointment at gp or breast clinic?

Hi fight

Thank you so much Thanks

It's with a specialist as I took Bings advice and rang BUPA direct, but the NHS referal was with the breast clinic.

A bit of me is worried that the clinic might have been best. The guy I am seeing is a general surgeon, specialising in breasts (I googled him)

I may well PM you if you really don't mind.

I would have thought that the specialist would be just as good as the breast clinic, possibly even the same consultant as I know my consultant also worked at the local bupa.
Yes do feel free to pm Smile

Hello catgirl

just wanted to add my support, I have also had breast cancer, and while the wait is awful you are doing the best thing by getting checked out as soon as possible.

Chances are it is nothing to worry about, but should it not be, best not to hang around waiting as I did

I will be thinking of you as well on thurs x

I had an urgent referral just before Christmas for a lump in my breast. The words "urgent referral" really make you absolutely crap yourself, don't they? But it's pretty standard. Just sounds terrifying.

It was a lump that didn't hurt, and didn't seem to move around, which Dr Google told me was not good. (Dr Google is a bastard. My doctor is much nicer, I shall go talk to her in future.) And I had a feeling it had been there for some time (breastfeeding, and it only became obvious when my breasts settled down a bit - before that they were too engorged for me to feel anything in there properly.)

Like a complete wally I just worried about it for several weeks (trying to convince myself it was my imagination), then finally realised I wasn't able to think about DS getting older w/o getting upset, and went to the GP. Saw GP on Friday who made urgent referral, got appt through on Tuesday, went to breast clinic on Thursday, and got the all clear. All that worry and I could have got it sorted in a week! A bloody week!

You said it helped to have an idea what the exam might be like so here's mine:

Went in and met consultant, who admired DS gurgling away in his car seat, then had a quick chat, he asked me a few questions about symptoms, history etc then did a breast exam. He then explained that they didn't find that mammograms were terribly effective on lactating women so we would take a look with the ultrasound. So out with the gel!

He had a look and then showed me the screen and explained that it was a milk cyst, which are apparently incredibly common in breastfeeding women but harmless. It just looked like a big dark bubble in my breast. He then used a very fine needle to draw all the fluid out (I could see the cyst shrinking on the ultrasound screen!) until there was nothing left. After that he said he'd send the fluid down to the lab for them to do some checks straightaway that we'd have results for today, and they'd do some more checks afterward.

He asked us to come back in an hour for the results, so went off and got a coffee (helpfully, navigating around the maze of a hospital to find the coffee shop used up some of the waiting time Grin ). Results were all clear. He said they'd do some further tests to be absolutely sure, and would send the results to my GP in a week, but there was absolutely no need to worry about these as everything looked good.

Good luck on Thursday catgirl, hope you have the all clear - it's by a long long way the most likely result, but always worth being checked all the same. I could kick myself for wasting that time worrying about it instead of going straight in and getting checked - well done you for getting it sorted quickly.

Thank you Claire - hope you are ok now.

Slightly yup - crapping myself is accurate. And Dr Google is a bastard. But googling things is a bit like picking a scab. Thank you for sharing - it really helps to get an idea of what might happen. The unknown is so scary. Am so pleased you got the all clear.

Thebody - thank you xxx

I am most scared at night. Dreading going up to bed. Daytime is so much more distracting! Still I am really lucky I have 2 more nights and then my appointment and I am pleased I am getting seen so quickly

Thank you all again for all the support

You really are helping. And lovely.

Catgirl, you will be absolutely fine, honestly. I have had two or three breast lumps, found by mammogram/ultrasound and they were all fine. (Was v scared but came out the other end!) Some people (including me) have lumpy breasts. You are very young, and the soreness is usually a good sign if you like.
When you come out the other end of this, try to get a BRCA test, because of your family history.

Report
howdoo · 10/04/2013 02:49

Sorry, that probably sounded bad - I had a big family history of breast/bowel/ovarian cancer, so had the BRCA test, and I don't have it. Also they are only interested in very close relatives, so your cousin wouldn't count in terms of the test.
