Especially with the young girls. The big hair extensions, full make up, fake tan, huge eyelashes, drawn on eyebrows look must be such high maintenance! It looks lovely, but I just can't imagine ever being arsed. I'd never have pulled! I'm so glad we never had Facebook or mobiles either. I was a teen in the early/mid 90s and thought that was traumatic enough with tie dye, dms and those heat changing tshirt things.

Have to say most young girls round here don't look like that. Do you live in Essex?

I was a teen mid 90s and there were plenty of my peers who were using sunbeds and wearing thick make up and fancy hair styles.

It seems to be paradoxically both more free but also more conformist. If that makes sense.

I don't see may teen girls looking like you describe most of the DDs friends couldn't be arsed with all that although there is girls who are styled like that in dds school hey i was an 80s teenager was all spikey hair onto spral perms and shoulder pads and far too much make up by the time i was 15 it took me hours to get the hair right

I did not have any frilly hair ribbon and lacey gloves in the 80s no way would i wear such a thing

I agree with you about social media and BBMing (it must be exhausting to be a teenager now as you don't get much of a break from the scrutiny of your peers).

YANBU I'm glad too as I would not fancy any of the lads with their trousers hanging down with last weeks washing on show....

We didn't clump about in 6 inch platforms with curly perms and bright blue eyeshadow, oh no.

i wore yellow and purple lipstick the 80s and i was quite normal.

the 80s was very very high maintenance but also fun, think they girls now are just having fun with it too. i also would have loved facebook and mobiles!

Er zwischenzug I live in Essex and the girls round here are more likely to be in horsey gear or jeans or PJs

YANBU. As someone who has been to Uni twice (20's and 40's) I can say that they put a lot more time money and effort these days. The scruffy up bun thing is just about as low key as they are prepared to do hair but "proper" make up seems to be de rigueur.

I was laughing at DD's disco pants until I realised I had an electric blue pair c. 1986/7. The shame!

But not all teens look like that. There have been stereotypes for every generation, just because that is what the media choose to show, doesn't mean they all dress I've that. Just like not all old ladies have helmet hair!

i used to spend hours getting ready, took years to pile on that glittery eyeshadow from miss selfridge, not to mention gelling the hair so it stood on end.

you had to queue for the phonebox in the early 80s too i wasn't allowed to use the house phone, 1 thing we could do was organise to meet friends I will get you at the park at 6 after my tea, now it is all text facebook and a just check and see text before they can go anywhere sigh

ooh yes i had a lady blouse with stand up collar and used to wear it with a little velvet bow round the collar, teamed with copper knicker bockers though i was about 12 then
