AIBU to not want to move to Dudley?

I was recently offered a very well-paid job in the Black Country but ended up turning it down because I just couldn't imagine myself living there. I drove around the area and found it, well, depressing and I couldn't imagine myself living there. No offense to anyone around there - sometimes people 'jive' with a place and sometimes they don't. And I'm not a huge fan of commuting - for lots of reasons - so didn't want to have to live 45/60 minutes away from work.

My DH always brings it up and thinks I made a mistake, particularly as the salary was so much more than I'm on now. I feel horrible about the whole thing so would appreciate if people told me I was (a) crazy to give up the job or (b) made the right decision.

You dont have to live in Dudley to work there!!!

You should have driven round more, I work in Dudley and within 20 minutes you can be in trescott, seisdon, claverly, wombourne and many other places that are just gorgeous.

There are bad areas in every city, not just those in the black country and its unfair that you think that. Its up to you where you want to work but its not nice to slate where other people work/live happily.

Numbthumbs · 08/04/2013 14:07

I love it here. We are going to play on Manor park now Grin

PollyMorph · 08/04/2013 14:16

I think a Barley Mow meet is definatly needed! I have never met another MNetter!

dietstartstmoz · 08/04/2013 14:20

We also live 20 mins from dudley town centre. We live on the edge of the countrside, there are some lovely residential areas within the borough of dudley, and fab little villages out in the sticks which are gorgeous. There are some excellent schools in dudley, good commuter links, good shopping (merry hill), sorry OP I think you have missed out by not moving to Dudley.

maddening · 08/04/2013 14:25

The difference is only £3k after tax and add the petrol of commiting there is probably less than £1k difference. So much of a muchness and you didn't like the area.

MarmaladeTwatkins · 08/04/2013 14:59

I used to live in Hollybush Lane!

BackforGood · 08/04/2013 15:50

Maddening - but the cost of living is a lot cheaper in Dudley than in the SE of England, so the same amount of money would go a lot further.

Owllady · 08/04/2013 15:55

Penn is very nice though
I used to live in Staffordshire and I still wouldn't particularly want to live in Dudley/Brierly Hill etc, having lived all over the country though west midlanders rreally would give you their last fiver variety and I miss that

maddening · 08/04/2013 15:58

true true back for good

Owllady · 08/04/2013 16:00

I remember I worked with a bloke from Durham who was really excited about going to the Harry Ramsden's at Merry Hill for a meal....
he came in the next day and said it was awful as they hadn't cooked the chips in lard Confused

Southeastdweller · 08/04/2013 18:06

This is making me so nostalgic I may go up to Dudley fr old times sake next time I'm in the area.

Does anyone remember those summer roadshow in the early 90's at Himley Hall? A friend and I went to see Take That at one event there in 1991 - even then we knew they were going to go far.

MarmaladeTwatkins · 09/04/2013 08:35

OMG YES Southeast! I used to love the summer fair things. That was where girls of my age would go to parade like Harmony (Mahogany) tinged peacocks in front of be-gelled boys in Naff Co jackets.

Halycon days.

Enzaboo · 04/09/2013 05:56

Georgie22 you mention the good areas in looking to move to the area where is a good place to move and places to avoid?? Xx

BuggerLumpsAnnoyed · 04/09/2013 09:17

You could of lived in bridgnorth. Which was on the front cover of most beautifil country towns.

QueenofallIsee · 04/09/2013 12:47

Dudley is grim but i grew up in a beautiful market town 30 mins away with original tudor buildings, independant shops and great schools. Should have planned it a bit better OP

QueenofallIsee · 04/09/2013 12:47

Thats where I am from bugger..gorgeous
