AIBU to not want to move to Dudley?

I was recently offered a very well-paid job in the Black Country but ended up turning it down because I just couldn't imagine myself living there. I drove around the area and found it, well, depressing and I couldn't imagine myself living there. No offense to anyone around there - sometimes people 'jive' with a place and sometimes they don't. And I'm not a huge fan of commuting - for lots of reasons - so didn't want to have to live 45/60 minutes away from work.

My DH always brings it up and thinks I made a mistake, particularly as the salary was so much more than I'm on now. I feel horrible about the whole thing so would appreciate if people told me I was (a) crazy to give up the job or (b) made the right decision.

All that is left on the roof of M&S. Sad

I was considerably older Hayle. Grin I worked at the Waterfront from 1995-2005. It was brilliant.

Haylebop12 · 08/04/2013 11:51

What a dad desperate photo. I almost feel sorry for it.

poocatcherchampion · 08/04/2013 11:51

I would love to live in wombourne
. tis lovely

MarmaladeTwatkins · 08/04/2013 11:54

Did it last as far as 1996?! Shock

Aaaaaah, I remember my first trip up to Merry Hell from Wolvertrampton, on the bus, aged 12. I had been given £20 to buy some new school shoes from Miss Selfridge (when there was a big Miss S there, in the unit where Fruit of the Loom is now! Not the pokey little one up the corner by Topshop)

However, I was lured in by the bright lights of the monorail and used up some of my shoe money to travel over the carparks of MH and back again. So I had to buy cheaper shoes then explain it to my mother :(

Sad Marmalade.

We live in Lower Penn and the commute when I worked in Dudley was around 20 mins. We're surrounded by fields and countryside. There are grotty bits, and although I have fond memories as a 10 year old of meeting my friend in Dudley to do our Christmas shopping (and having lunch in Beatties), I visited the centre about half a dozen times whilst working at Castlegate - Merryhill has killed it.

Sparklingbrook · 08/04/2013 12:07

I was in a team of 12 people at The Waterfront, I was the only one who lived some distance away. It was a hoot, the sense of humour is brilliant, and I learnt lots of new words. Grin

Buzzardbird · 08/04/2013 12:08

Ah Lower Penn is lovely, as is Himley and Penn Common, all within 15 mins of Dudley.
"Lunch in Beatties" you are so posh! They did a lovely Welsh Rarebit.

Sparklingbrook · 08/04/2013 12:09

They have turned our Beatties in Worcester into House of Fraser. No Toy Dept. Sad

Buzzardbird · 08/04/2013 12:09

I worked at the Mezza when it first opened. The social life with the first lot of managers in Debenhams was a riot, oh, those were the days...

Buzzardbird · 08/04/2013 12:11

Last time I revisited Worcester for shopping I was very disappointed at the amount of independants that had gone |:(

MarmaladeTwatkins · 08/04/2013 12:11

My dad and stepmum live in Lower Penn! It's gorgeous! They live just by The Greyhound.

BestIsWest · 08/04/2013 12:12

Ooh I used to live in Penn when I was at Wolves Poly. There used to be a fab little pub out on Penn Common called the Barley Mow

Sparklingbrook · 08/04/2013 12:12

I know Buzzard, it is getting a bit sad in Worcester. Sad Did you see the golden library?

Haylebop12 · 08/04/2013 12:13

I work in penn and lived in wombourne for a year. Came back to my roots and not live about 1.5 miles away from
The town centre (in a nice bit Grin)

BestIsWest · 08/04/2013 12:14

My God I have just googled it. It has been done up. It was literally 2 tiny rooms and a outside loo the .

Buzzardbird · 08/04/2013 12:14

Oh I passed that yesterday Marmalade taking DH to golf. Brought back some memories sitting in the garden there.

Buzzardbird · 08/04/2013 12:15

I used to drink in the Barley Mow regulary when I lived about 100 yards from it.

HenrySugar · 08/04/2013 12:15

You're all making me very nostalgic - I grew up near Dudley but have moved far, far away. I enjoy "Mezza" (do people really say that?) on my yearly visits home but suspect I am being a little rose-tinted?

georgie22 · 08/04/2013 12:16

BestisWest - the Barley Mow is still going strong. Haven't been for a while but they used to do a lovely steak and mushroom pie with proper chips! Yum!

Buzzardbird · 08/04/2013 12:16

I didn't walk up that far Sparkling, was a bit deflated after a walk around the debenhams end.

Buzzardbird · 08/04/2013 12:17

Oh the Hells Angels won't be able to shag in the loos anymore!

Bridgetbidet · 08/04/2013 12:22

Solihull is supposed to be really nice...

ClaireDeTamble · 08/04/2013 12:23

The thing about this area (Dudley / Wolves / Sandwell) is while some areas are currently a bit dire, the improvements that are in the pipeline are going to make a mahoosive difference to the area - the I54, the JLR deal, the enterprise zone, the fact that Wolves kept their School Improvement Money.

Cheap houses now, will hopefully see quite an increase over the next few years.
