to suggest that every MN stops posting links to the Daily Mail

Every day on here people post links to stories in the Mail. The Mail don't care whether you are clicking out of outrage, curiosity or any other reason, they still get the revenue.

If everyone who agrees they've gone too far with today's headline agrees never to post or click on another Daily Mail link, it might only be a small change but it's pretty easy to do and might make MN a nicer place.

If anyone does want to post a DM link, please warn people! Most posters used to be pretty good but I know others have stopped doing warnings.

I will be pretty damn pissed off if I accidentally click on one at this point.

Agree totally.

The DM is hardly the last bastion of objective reporting and not even worthy of being used as toilet paper.

It's pretty depressing that anyone even reads that crap and believes it without question.

It's a cynical, nasty rag.

Agree wholeheartedly.

I've just seen the front pages of all the red tops in the supermarket. (this is the extent of my newspaper exposurenormally) The DM was outrageous.
Trouble is, I'm pretty sure lots of people will see that as a reasonable assessment of the situation.

I think they did Softly. It wasn't the headline in Scotland's Mail though which I did see in a shop this morning.

I'm appealing more to the posters who post links to them out of outrage. If we click the links they make money. They don't care why people click the links, as long as they make money. The Mail online must be one of the biggest and most successful internet trolls, post something controversial and watch the revenue come in.

I agree. The DM's business plan seems to be to act like a giant, provocative troll. It's a very successful business plan too, they are IIRC the biggest news site worldwide, which is shameful Sad

But this is exactly because there are so many of us who wouldn't actually buy a paper DM, but link to it in anger.

I also suggest that the extreme lefties on this site stop accusing anyone who disagrees with them as being a DM reader. It's not true, and even if it were, it's not an insult. It's just pathetic.

People on this site are far too obsessed with the DM.

I disagree. Perhaps the posters should just make it clear that it is an DM link so DM haters can avoid it. That's sounds fair to me.

I hate/don't read the DM. However I like to know what's being written about and when. If only so I can shrug at it.

I'm against censorship. But on the other hand you hardly ever see links to the Guardian. I don't think I've ever seen one linked to The Times. Maybe a more balanced approach to links would be better.

Even though people know that the DM spout rubbish they still like to be enraged by the rubbish.

On FB, quite a few of my friends often link to great guardian articles though. However it tends to be more of a cuppa and a "hmmmm, never thought that until now" articles Grin

It's not censorship. OP is not suggesting that MN bans links to DM, but is asking that those of us that actively dislike it and don't want to send traffic their way, just don't post links to DM. Those that are happy to post or click links to DM just need to make it clear what it is so others can avoid if they wish. It is just giving people the choice.

I don't want to live anywhere where I cannot have freedom to read what I like, say what I like, think what I like. I don't like people chipping away at my liberty to do so in the name of the greater good or some moral crusade. I don't like the though police much either. But I do like living in a democracy.

So I will carry on reading a wide variety of media and posting legal links to anything I deem fit. You may exercise your democratic right to ignore those links.
