AIBU?

to suggest that every MN stops posting links to the Daily Mail

AKissIsNotAContract · 03/04/2013 12:22

(unless you agree with them, in which case go ahead and the rest of us can avoid)

Every day on here people post links to stories in the Mail. The Mail don't care whether you are clicking out of outrage, curiosity or any other reason, they still get the revenue.

If everyone who agrees they've gone too far with today's headline agrees never to post or click on another Daily Mail link, it might only be a small change but it's pretty easy to do and might make MN a nicer place.

Agreed, and then abusing anyone who isn't as outraged as they or don't want to join their moral crusade.

Pathetic.

Particularly pathetic are those posters who must rush to their computers every morning to scan the DM looking to be outraged and then posting their findings on MN.

I find the DM links harder to spot now I use my phone a lot because I can't check the address I'm being sent to before I click.

A lot of posters are great about saying Warning: DM link! Which is great, but thought it was worth reminding those who aren't aware that lots of posters feel strongly about not wanting to give the DM any money!

I don't know how to do links but if I did I wouldn't put a warning up. It's ridiculous. I just can't get het up with it all.

people on here rarely posts where the link are from

they just do \link{http://www.soest.hawaii.edu/expeditions/mariana/images/annsoupy/kids-easter%20soupy%20closeup.jpg\look} here type of links

anyway people will continue to post links without warning though i dont get worked up by dm links myself

I thought everyone already did warn of DM link?

Fully agree, in future, please all make sure to post a link for the same news in each of all UK newspapers.

:o

Oh no I don't want any posts censored. All I'm suggesting is that the people who don't like the mail stop posting and clicking on links which earn money for the mail. If you like them and want them to keep making money, then post and click as much as you like. If you only click out of curiosity/outrage then recognise that you are paying them (albeit indirectly) to cause you outrage.

It's a fair request to ask people to clearly mark Daily mail links,

It would be very unreasonable not to clearly indicate a DM link,

It's not censorship to allow people to make an informed choice.

Maybe MN could install something so all DM links show, if people are unable to manage themselves.

Not everyone wants to fund vile poison, and it's not nice to be duped into doing so.

Block the links.

It is not censorship - you can still access the crap if you want to.

You can still chat about and argue about what is in the paper, just that direct links from mumsnet won't work.

You can still read the nasty stuff if it is news (as today) as it will nearly always have been reproduced elsewhere to avoid generating profits for the Daily Mail (e.g. as an image or cut 'n; paste).

You could even just have a DAILY MAIL ALERT! colourful thing which makes it stand out when a DM link is in the OP or replies - that would be better than nothing.

It is not about censorship but about not generating advertising revenues for them and fuelling their profits.

YANBU to want to do everything possible to avoid feeding the DM. Unfortunately though, it's already grown to horrific proportions and I fear the only way to really stop it now would be to kill it with fire.

A random place as any to drop in a comment. Some of you may follow @ Gin O'clock, a spoof site stalking Her Maj.

Gin rips the piss out of a lot of things. Gin posted this morning ""North Korea have blocked one on Twitter. That's the very last straw.""

I don't want to live anywhere where I cannot have freedom to read what I like, say what I like, think what I like. I don't like people chipping away at my liberty to do so in the name of the greater good or some moral crusade. I don't like the though police much either. But I do like living in a democracy.

So I will carry on reading a wide variety of media and posting legal links to anything I deem fit. You may exercise your democratic right to ignore those links.

It's not censorship. OP is not suggesting that MN bans links to DM, but is asking that those of us that actively dislike it and don't want to send traffic their way, just don't post links to DM. Those that are happy to post or click links to DM just need to make it clear what it is so others can avoid if they wish. It is just giving people the choice.

Report
BumpingFuglies · 03/04/2013 14:03

That smacks of censorship OP. If you don't want to read it, don't click on it. It's an open and largely unmoderated forum.

YY to that harry!

But unfortunately some people read the crap that the DM spouts and dont bother to find out the other side or a more balanced view.

Report
harryhausen · 03/04/2013 13:50

I think that's because the Guardian and the Times rarely have articles that make you go "whaaaat?"

Even though people know that the DM spout rubbish they still like to be enraged by the rubbish.

On FB, quite a few of my friends often link to great guardian articles though. However it tends to be more of a cuppa and a "hmmmm, never thought that until now" articles Grin

Viviennemary · 03/04/2013 13:46

I'm against censorship. But on the other hand you hardly ever see links to the Guardian. I don't think I've ever seen one linked to The Times. Maybe a more balanced approach to links would be better.

harryhausen · 03/04/2013 13:43

I agree with Chipstick too.

I hate/don't read the DM. However I like to know what's being written about and when. If only so I can shrug at it.

givemeaclue · 03/04/2013 13:42

To be fair, most people do that

I disagree. Perhaps the posters should just make it clear that it is an DM link so DM haters can avoid it. That's sounds fair to me.
