To think tvs with screens over 37" are naff naff naff?

Unless it's in a room the size of a small cinema, that is...

As part of my job I see the insides of lots of peoples' houses. And it never ceases to amaze me how so many people seem determined to squeeze a ridiculously enormous tv screen into a small room. It doesn't seem to bother that they sometimes have to obscure half the window, or remove most of the other furniture from the room to fit it in (ok that's an exaggeration). Just cos something is available in an enormous size, doesn't mean you have to buy it.

When we were looking at tvs in John Lewis the other day, I overheard a saleswoman telling somebody that she would always recommend going no bigger than 37 inches in an average sized room. She'll probably get the sack if she keeps telling people that, but I wanted to kiss her.

If I ever try to watch one of these ridiculous tvs, they make me sea sick. Seriously.

YANBU - we spent a fair amount on a 28" tv a couple of years - the salesman couldn't understand why we wouldn't want a 40" plus screen for less money!

But each to their own and all that

Zatopek · 28/03/2013 20:33

I hate large TVs.

We own one because when we were furnishing our first home, DH bought it off a mate for 20quid. I just wanted to cry when I saw it. It is so ugly and dominates the room. And because it's old it's almost as wide as it is long.
At least you can hang a flat screen on a wall.

Then DH decided we should get another TV for the bedroom after my retro portable bit the dust. Another friend offered his old TV. It was massive and stank. That had to go to landfill in the end- thank goodness.

My DH argues that it's great for sport and I suppose I do watch Wimbledon on it but I grew up with portable black and white TVs (no money for colour) and I just find big TVs obnoxious.

Pan · 28/03/2013 20:35

I'm sure some of the really big screens show the people on screen actually bigger than life size. Which is just wrong.

VerySmallSqueak · 28/03/2013 20:41

We have recently moved from an ancient 32" set big enough to camp in to a 42" flat screen.
We feel like real proper people now.

countrykitten · 28/03/2013 20:43

Zatopek astonished that a tv set can stink! Brilliant!

NotGoodNotBad · 28/03/2013 20:44

Above the Italianate marble fire place, fixed to the wall, was a......massive plasma flat-screen.....thing.

DH wanted to do this in our house. I put my foot down. "NotGood, why don't I get a say in what we do with the house." "Because, DH, a flat screen TV on the fireplace wall in an old house is just wrong!" and probably against the law

We have a 37" now. I wasn't convinced we needed something so big - but the first evening I just sat gazing in wonder at some film. Didn't follow the plot at all, I was just amazed by the pretty pictures. Smile However, Dragons Den is awful (you can see the pores on all those big faces) and 80's TV is pretty unwatchable quality. Also, now when we visit the inlaws and try to watch a film in letter box on their tiny portable I get the rage!

CandlestickOlder · 28/03/2013 20:51

YABU

Mine is bigger than that but suits the room. The only bad thing about a big telly is that not every channel is yet available in HD. Non-HD is terrible. And worse on a bigger TV

jellybeans · 28/03/2013 20:52

I have a 40 and it is fab! Wouldn't want bigger though.

CandlestickOlder · 28/03/2013 20:53

And a TV on the wall is yuck yuck yuck.

Even worse than that are glass and chrome stands.

Zatopek · 28/03/2013 20:56

countrykitten "Zatopek astonished that a tv set can stink! Brilliant! "

Well you see I blamed the TV because when it had been on for a while there was a horrible smell in the room afterwards. It seemed to be coming from the hot TV.

Turns out the TV was sitting on a table that is coated in a varnish or something that gives off a slight "eau de groin" odour when sniffed up close. The TV was heating up the table causing the smell to increase and permeate the room.

Still it helped me to convince DH to bin the TV!

Zatopek · 28/03/2013 20:58

"And a TV on the wall is yuck yuck yuck"

Agree it's not great but a lot better than ugly stand we picked up on freecycle or a TV with huge depth

ATouchOfStuffing · 28/03/2013 21:00

An ex bought me a 35'' when I had previously made it clear I didn't want one bigger than 32'' Hmm but I couldn't exactly complain could I? I still feel a bit embarrassed when people come in and my living room isn't that small, so it probably looks in place but seems only marginally smaller than the over mantle mirror, which makes it seem huge!

MissBetseyTrotwood · 28/03/2013 21:21

I don't mind them when they're on but when they're off they look really awful. Like a big black hole in the lounge wall.

TobyLerone · 28/03/2013 21:25

I really do hate them on the wall, though.

NetworkGuy · 28/03/2013 21:25

I have 32" and 40" in the lounge, connected to different sources, and a 42" upstairs (because it has more HDMI inputs, so can cope with the PS3, Toshiba laptop, Freeview HD/iPlayer, and FreeSat HD boxes).

House is two up, two down (plus a bathroom upstairs) and is quite small, but to be frank, it's not as if either TV is obscuring anything like a window (both are flat against one wall, and there are two two-seater sofas arranged in a V facing so I can relax and watch whichever I wish...

FWIW, the 40" (Toshiba) happens to not be as rich in colour as the 32" (Samsung), so I have one of my iMacs plugged into it, with wireless keyboard and mouse, so I can browse on the bigger screen while watching a film on the smaller... and yes, I do have a tablet as well, but viewing the Mac output on a big screen is pretty darn wonderful! (For sound I have a reasonable hi-fi amp and a pair of fair size speakers either side of the 32" TV about 2m from the floor)

blackice · 28/03/2013 21:27

large TVs - naff
TV in bedroom - naff

NetworkGuy · 28/03/2013 21:35

"apparently when it eventually breaks it will be really hard to get another TV so small."

nonsense - Kogan.co.uk has 19" with / without DVD player for £79 / £99 (which can also be run on 12V so usable in a caravan)... they do offer 16" to 55" inch TVs though, for those who prefer bigger...

dimdommilpot · 28/03/2013 21:44

We just got a new TV, it is 55inch. Id spent 3hr in the damn shop i was happy to agree to anything. It does fit perfectly on the tv stand and isnt much bigger than the previous 40inch due to the screen going all the way to the edge and not having the surround case thing. The lounge is fairly big. The kitchen and our bedroom both have 32inch.

VerySmallSqueak · 28/03/2013 22:09

Big old bulky tv had to sit on a stand and took up a lot of room. You couldn't miss it.

I love my big shiny new flat screen on the wall - more space now and it fits into a corner where you can't see it unless you come right into the room.

I can stand in the doorway and not even see we've got a tv.

Horsemad · 28/03/2013 22:12

I have only just got over my 'D'H buying a 55" at Christmas Sad

It was nearly divorce; I hated it and he was adamant it was staying.

There was a 10page thread on here about it Grin

determinedma · 28/03/2013 22:29

Eek hate huge TVs on the wall. Might as well live in a pub. Refuse one in the bedroom too. I insist on at least one fecking room being idiot-box free.

Pan · 28/03/2013 22:51

hi horsemad (SCD threads?)

I am going to have to give in to dd's demands, and have her drag me in to flat screen land, and soon. LG seem the cheapest simplest, and it is def going on a piece of wood furniture..when that sad day arrives...

Horsemad · 28/03/2013 23:38

Hiya Pan!

Wish SCD was still on Grin Sat night tv is rubbish atm.

Apparently Samsung are the tv people these days Confused
Ours is a Sony - it's a smart tv, whatever the hell that means. I can only just manage to switch it on Grin

Pan · 28/03/2013 23:46

a funny. my sister bought a massive tv. I asked why. She said it was because of her failing eye-sight. I said, "so get some glasses?" B-i-l said " I know. We've been there." Sis didn;t flinch. She wants a big screen rather than glasses!
