To think tvs with screens over 37" are naff naff naff?

Unless it's in a room the size of a small cinema, that is...

As part of my job I see the insides of lots of peoples' houses. And it never ceases to amaze me how so many people seem determined to squeeze a ridiculously enormous tv screen into a small room. It doesn't seem to bother that they sometimes have to obscure half the window, or remove most of the other furniture from the room to fit it in (ok that's an exaggeration). Just cos something is available in an enormous size, doesn't mean you have to buy it.

When we were looking at tvs in John Lewis the other day, I overheard a saleswoman telling somebody that she would always recommend going no bigger than 37 inches in an average sized room. She'll probably get the sack if she keeps telling people that, but I wanted to kiss her.

If I ever try to watch one of these ridiculous tvs, they make me sea sick. Seriously.

depends how big your bag is. She had a BIG bag. And a strong sense of denial.

I prefer a larger tv screen. I have a smaller tv in the bedroom and it strains my eyes. Unless guests are there specifically to watch something with us, the tv is off when we have people visiting, with music on in the background.

Different strokes for different folks.

midastouch · 29/03/2013 00:58

My mum has a 40 inch tv but there room is plenty big enough, it would look rediculous in our house, we have 32inch which i think is fine DP on the other hands wants a bigger one idiot

SecondhandRose · 29/03/2013 07:10

We have 55" and we are proud. Just over an inch deep and hanging on the wall oht of the way.

SecondhandRose · 29/03/2013 07:12

And at the end of the bed we have one that appears out of a wooden box. Rather coffin like but very stylish!

RubyGates · 29/03/2013 07:28

We have a 24/26"(?) (not sure ) tucked away in the corner of the room. Our across-the road neighbours have the same sized living-room but when I'm doing the washing up (and looking out of the kitchen window) , their TV looks bigger to me than ours does when I'm in the same room as it.

I have to hope they're watching the same channel as us so I can watch theirs and hear ours.

I suspect they might have gone a bit overboard in the Telly shop.

countrykitten · 29/03/2013 09:27

SecondhandRose I fear that your idea of 'stylish' is my idea of horribly tacky!

Mrscupcake23 · 29/03/2013 09:33

I have never walked into anyone's sitting room and thought what a lovely tv whatever size it is. It's not really furniture and if you love tv why not have a big one. Really don't get the sea sickness thing either.

LadyMaryCrawley · 29/03/2013 09:35

The bigger the tv, the smaller the bookcase...

I would happily get rid of our modest 28 inch telly. And am secretly glad that we can't get Sky because of next door's trees even though I pretend to sympathize with DH when he rants about it.

countrykitten · 29/03/2013 09:44

LMC you will now get a raft of denials about this and also about how people only watch educational tv etc. I think that you are right though - it does seem to correlate that houses that really value their tvs don't value books as much. When I was an EWO I saw this a great deal on house visits.

Horsemad · 29/03/2013 09:54

This is why I was so gobsmacked my DH 'needed' this tv! He is extremely well educated and just isn't the stereotypical crap tv watching person that people imagine, and nor am I!!

He does however love 'tech' so there is the appeal I fear.

kennyp · 29/03/2013 10:02

I absolutely MUST get out of bed and measure our tv screen. Its quite big but i can lift it when dusting annually

The ils have a telly the size of some patio bloody doors. Its constantly on and no ine watches it and i hate those sky remotes anyway such neuroses explains why i havent been to ils house in 11 mo ths

Loulybelle · 29/03/2013 10:06

My friends Neighbour has 70" beast, you can see it through the window from her window, the houses are so not big enough for a telly that size.

I cant remember what comedian said it, but he said if you have a telly too big for your lounge, your working class.

ParadiseChick · 29/03/2013 10:49

Oh here comes the snobbery!

My bookcase is now pretty minimal, thanks to my kindle, I was able to free up lots of room in my tiny house! I've only kept some reference and travel books and a few books I love.

ParadiseChick · 29/03/2013 10:49

Sorry, meant to say, I'm a librarian Grin

countrykitten · 29/03/2013 10:50

Ah but do you have a big tv....? Grin

ps - books are better then tv. Full stop. Amen.

VerySmallSqueak · 29/03/2013 11:21

I have groaning bookshelves to go with my big tv.

I have to be honest-I don't actually watch that much tv and several nights a week it doesn't even go on when the kids are in bed.
But the kids do watch it,and on the rare occasion we do all sit down and watch a film it is quite nice.

For me a bigger screen was because we have quite a long front room/dining room so it seemed to make sense to get a bigger one if we were getting a new one.
The reason I caved in was that I really noticed the difference in picture quality when comparing others new tv's to our old secondhand one.

Angelico · 29/03/2013 11:58

Tvs need to fit the room. We have a 32 inch TV which was perfect in old house but too small in new house as the room is big. I refused to wall mount it as just don't like them. Also detest TVs in bedrooms full stop.

Rubena · 29/03/2013 11:58

We have a 50 inch, but the all of downstairs is one big open plan room. We want a 60 inch Grin It's not our only TV either. We have a 32 inch in the bedroom.

SecondhandRose · 29/03/2013 12:02

Thank you 'country kitten' I shall take that as a compliment.

countrykitten · 29/03/2013 12:12

Please do so! I am sure that you would find many things probably virtually everything about my house not to your taste!
