To think tvs with screens over 37" are naff naff naff?

Unless it's in a room the size of a small cinema, that is...

As part of my job I see the insides of lots of peoples' houses. And it never ceases to amaze me how so many people seem determined to squeeze a ridiculously enormous tv screen into a small room. It doesn't seem to bother that they sometimes have to obscure half the window, or remove most of the other furniture from the room to fit it in (ok that's an exaggeration). Just cos something is available in an enormous size, doesn't mean you have to buy it.

When we were looking at tvs in John Lewis the other day, I overheard a saleswoman telling somebody that she would always recommend going no bigger than 37 inches in an average sized room. She'll probably get the sack if she keeps telling people that, but I wanted to kiss her.

If I ever try to watch one of these ridiculous tvs, they make me sea sick. Seriously.

I have no doubt we are judged by some who come to our home but DH just loves his TVs. We have:
42in in the sitting room that DH has informed me he is upgrading to a 46 in
46in (on wall) in a very long kitchen/dining/family room
32in (on wall) in the garden room
23in in my study
23in in master bedroom
19in in guest bedroom
32in (on wall) in DH's office
NO TVs (or computers) in children's rooms - it is the one place I have managed to retain some power over.
I have massively reduced the number of books and bookcases (apart from children's rooms) in the house too due to the internet & kindle.
It may be naff, naff, naff but I don't really care. I wouldn't have chosen this myself but I can live with it - they are clearly more important for DH to have than me not to have.

Good God zlist that sounds like my idea of hell. Why oh why would anyone need all those tvs? I would judge - it may be wrong but I wouldn't be able to help myself!

CourgetteSmuggler · 29/03/2013 14:21

We have a 50". Why would you want a TV where you have to strain to see writing on the screen? In my opinion I think it looks really cheap when you see a tiny telly in a normal sized lounge.

coorong · 29/03/2013 14:24

YANBU

don't you all know the inverse relationship between television size and where you are on the social ladder ......

and between number of televisions / screens and number of books....

JaponicaTroggs · 29/03/2013 14:33

What a vile and snobby thread. Some things I like about Mumsnet, this sort of thread I loathe. You seriously judge someone on their tv size? You think it makes you a better person because you have an older/smaller piece of technology?
Making ridiculous assumptions about level of education or class based on television size marks you as a grade A judgy cunt of the highest order imo. I'm so glad I don't mix with people like that in my real life. Seriously, some on here need to take a good look at themselves. Ugh. Angry

HesterShaw · 29/03/2013 15:40

Ours is 22 inches.

Everyone else is naff Grin

Arisbottle · 29/03/2013 15:45

We have a huge TV, our little brains need something to compensate.

A mumsnet fail is usually a life success IMO, once again am pleased to have failed to meet the standards of the MN snobs,

Arisbottle · 29/03/2013 15:48

The bigger the tv, the smaller the bookcase...

Just sneers, judgy typical MN bollocks. We have a huge TV, have 3 TVs overall and yet have a house full of books. This will come as a shock to the MN snoberatti but we can actually read all those books to.

In the age of the kindle you really cannot tell how much someone reads by their bookshelves.

LMC you will now get a raft of denials about this and also about how people only watch educational tv etc. I think that you are right though - it does seem to correlate that houses that really value their tvs don't value books as much. When I was an EWO I saw this a great deal on house visits.

Again judgy bollocks. We love a bit of TV, we also love the radio and to read. Humans have been created with the ability to enjoy more than one thing. Unless, despite my huge TV , I am simply more evolved than the MN snoberatti.

Changebagsandgladrags · 29/03/2013 15:57

We have a 42 inch. It's on a table next to the twigs and pebbly shit. We have a brown leather sofa. We take the kids to soft play and sometimes they have chicken nuggets for dinner.

Arisbottle · 29/03/2013 15:59

We also have brown leather sofas , I hate twiggy stuff but am tempted to buy one because every time I look at them it will remind me of the MN snoberatti.

theodorakisses · 29/03/2013 16:11

I have an Escalade, a big tv and a big house (but not in the UK) I also have a pick up to walk the dogs and a housemaid and a gardener. If I lived in the UK I would not only not be able to afford it but would also look a bit silly. Not sure if it is fair to say it is naff but there is a context.

Iaintdunnuffink · 29/03/2013 16:22

How exciting, I'm a couple of inches over the naff threshold. We also only have books in a couple of cubby holes downstairs, as thats all the adult books we own. I really should leave my e-reader out on display at the bookshelf page to show off my reading tastes to guests.

We don't have any CDs in the house, or DVDs so I can't even astound visitors with my superior music taste. I must admit to showing people my media NAS because it's so cute, it's tiny and a thing of beauty. I've been known to bore people about the disk size and RAID. All I need is a little screen on the side that pulls up random album titles to impress. Knowing my luck it would pull up Jedward over Samuel Barber.

Iaintdunnuffink · 29/03/2013 16:24

I should start leaving the Rado app up on the tv when we know guests will turn up, radio 4 of course.

theodorakisses · 29/03/2013 16:25

Radio 4 should have a health warning, if I can't hear it I panic

piprabbit · 29/03/2013 16:28

If I'm making a cup of tea, the first thing I do is switch on R4.

Iaintdunnuffink · 29/03/2013 16:33

My 8 year told me that Radio 4 made even a 5 minute car journey feel like we'd been driving for hours, then did a rather good impression of an old man droning on and on and on. He needs educating.

monkeytrunks · 29/03/2013 16:40

We're in the Fatback Band - silver Samsung that refuses to die. I kind of wish it would. Since we got a skinny wee telly in the kitchen we rarely sit on the settee /sofa in the lounge/sitting room/living room (delete according to class preference)

zlist · 29/03/2013 16:58

He doesn't need them countrykitten. He doesn't need 15 guitars either; I manage with just the one piano Wink. I don't mind people judging - it is excessive and I have indulged in plenty of piss-taking myself over the years.

ParadiseChick · 29/03/2013 17:15

As I mentioned before I got rid of a lot of books, along with a lot of cd's and DVDs. I have stuff lying about!

Doesn'tmean that no one reads or listens to music.

In fact I just finished the new Jodi picoult whilst listening to some simply lovely classical rock music.

ParadiseChick · 29/03/2013 17:15

I'm pure class, obviously.

ParadiseChick · 29/03/2013 17:17

It's like that twats that bang on about their dc not getting a tablet/console/ds etc because they like to play OUTSIDE in the MUD.

It's as if the two are mutually exclusive of one another.

Oldandcobwebby · 29/03/2013 17:25

We have a 60in plasma in our (very big) living room, and a 50in 3D set in the bedroom. We really don't care if people think they are naff - my wife and I would have bigger ones if space and cash allowed!

I also really don't care about what people may conclude about the size of my penis.

Oldandcobwebby · 29/03/2013 17:27

Oh, and my wife used to be a librarian. We don't exactly lack for books, either!
