To think tvs with screens over 37" are naff naff naff?

Unless it's in a room the size of a small cinema, that is...

As part of my job I see the insides of lots of peoples' houses. And it never ceases to amaze me how so many people seem determined to squeeze a ridiculously enormous tv screen into a small room. It doesn't seem to bother that they sometimes have to obscure half the window, or remove most of the other furniture from the room to fit it in (ok that's an exaggeration). Just cos something is available in an enormous size, doesn't mean you have to buy it.

When we were looking at tvs in John Lewis the other day, I overheard a saleswoman telling somebody that she would always recommend going no bigger than 37 inches in an average sized room. She'll probably get the sack if she keeps telling people that, but I wanted to kiss her.

If I ever try to watch one of these ridiculous tvs, they make me sea sick. Seriously.

at the moment we have a small old tv in a large lounge but the building plan is to have a drawing room, with the small old tv, and a snug will have a shamefully sized screen with surround sound etc. and comfy sofas. makes better use of space than a home cinema IMO.

so gogglebox and tv free room.....

BarredfromhavingStella · 28/03/2013 17:14

We have a 50" & I love it, doesn't look massive in the lounge so the room is clearly big enough for the TV...

juanca · 28/03/2013 17:14

'lol at "never watched tv" wtf is the difference between that and a DVD'

the difference is (in our house anyway) that you don't end up watching hours and hours of shite and only watch what you really want to watch. Maybe this doesn't happen to others but when I had a TV I ended up turning it on just because I was bored and ended up watching TV movies entitled 'My stepbrother, my lover' and reality shows called 'when animals attack' and eventually I decided it had to stop! Have cut down viewing by at least half, I think.

mmmerangue · 28/03/2013 17:14

Nina, for my parents the concern was advertising. Guess what I studied at Uni?

nannynick · 28/03/2013 17:18

juanca - I rarely watch live tv, it's mostly all catch-up so get to watch what I want to watch rather than just leaving it on watching endless things. So I half agree, though it's not the TV's fault, it's how someone chooses to use it.

cantspel · 28/03/2013 17:19

juanca if you dont want to watch crap then locate the off button of your tv and use it. Why miss out on the decent tv programs just because you are too weak willed to turn the tv off when a program fininshes.

Or buy a tv that will turn itself off after a certain time. My tv is set to 3 hours so if someone falls asleep infront of it it is not on all night.

juanca · 28/03/2013 17:22

'juanca if you dont want to watch crap then locate the off button of your tv and use it''

:) that's like saying 'if you don't want to get fat just eat one chocolate in the box!' if that works for you, then great. But it doesn't work for me.

Chocolatemilkshake · 28/03/2013 17:24

YABU. We have a 60" 3D tv and I love it.

fl0b0t · 28/03/2013 17:30

I hate tellys as the focal point of the room, but then having said that.... we have borrowed a projector and screen from a friend who is currently travelling.... the screen is about 2m on the diagonal!! We do have a 26ft lounge or something stupid!

Bartlebee · 28/03/2013 17:40

Like the OP, I snoop look at houses for my job.

I like a big screen in a basement cinema (of which I see many - affluent area), but a huge TV in a poky semi, where it overpowers the room, looks quite sad to me.

poppydoppy · 28/03/2013 17:42

We have various sized TVs ranging from 65 inch to 40 inch, it depends on the size of the room or personal choice.

YABU.

We've just upgraded from a 32" to a 47" and it's ridiculously awesome.

I wish I could say I bought it with my JSA or something, just to be more annoying.

ScentedNappyHag · 28/03/2013 17:57

I recently inherited a 50 inch tv (my dad gave me his when he upgraded to a 3D jobby), I don't see why it's naff, it's just a tv in a room Confused

There's a late Victorian house recently sold near me. Gorgeous, with oodles of original features. I walked by the other night - lounge had no curtains, with the light on. Above the Italianate marble fire place, fixed to the wall, was a......massive plasma flat-screen.....thing.

So I barged in, ripped the offending monstrosity off the wall, and ordered the incumbents to fuck off and live in a 'modern mews' somewhere near Basildon. Which they did.

nkf · 28/03/2013 19:42

I have a very respectable 32 inch. And I long, just long for some enormous affair with all round sound. Just like I'd rather like to travel in a bubble gum pink limo. Just once.

CheshireDing · 28/03/2013 19:42

YANBU, very tacky.

We replaced our little portable TV last year as it really was getting a bit comedy, it was a 20" and the living room is 30ft, we don't watch much TV so hadn't bothered about it but then we got some vouchers and decide to buy one.

The thing I don't understand (aside from big TV's in small lounges) is that when you are up close to some of the really big ones you can see all the little squares. Why pay lots of money for what doesn't seem as sharp a picture to me?

Pan · 28/03/2013 19:44

dd is demanding a 32" screen. Currently we have an 18" thing, 15 years old, with a big fat bit at the back. I like it, she hates it.

slatternlymother · 28/03/2013 19:45

YABU. Watching Jeremy Kyle has never been so good.

Our living room is larger than most, but we actually have a smaller TV than most. I think it's 37 inches, but only because it was on special Grin

The wall would happily carry a 60 inch TV and not look swamped; but I'm tight and won't replace the current TV until its well and truly broken.

oh come onnnn. Beautiful house. Defiled. Hard labour for 25 years for the fuckers. Or Basildon.Grin>

Merguez · 28/03/2013 19:54

Obviously there is a relationship between penis size and TV size.

Small penis = big TV.

Pan · 28/03/2013 19:55

Interesting...Blush
