To think that TESCO should be held accountable for selling something like this?

I was shopping in Tesco tonight for a Birthday card for my brother. My DP was looking through the humour section and drew my attention to a disgusting card that was on display in the front row of the section. It read:

BEWARE

INSIDE IS A

FILTHY

LITTLE BITCH JUST

FOR YOU TO LOOK AT.

Inside is a picture of a dog. I assume that is meant to be the 'humorous' aspect of it.

Have I had a sense of humour failure? I don't find this at all funny. It gives the the creeps. That kind of language - ''filthy little bitch,'' is what I think most people would associate with hardcore pornography. The 'little,' to me, implies young, which just makes it even worse.

Who would give this as a Birthday card? And why do Tesco think this kind of thing is acceptable for a place where families shop?

Please tell me I'm not being unreasonable!

That is grim. Akin to that stupid ad for a drink, which says PUSSY then tries to imply that it's the reader / buyer (as if) who has a dirty mind. If there wasn't a double meaning they wouldn't have called it that or made the "joke" in the first place now would they. Please complain OP.

AmandaPayneNeedsAHoliday You've hit the nail on the head!

fallon8 Of course I opened the card. The fact that I opened it doesn't imply that I approve of it or that I think it was in any way humorous. My DP noticed it first and passed it to me because the thought it was disgusting.

I hate this stuff. Really really hate it.

Caitlin Moran did a column in the Times today actually. Can't link because of the firewall, but the basic gist was that misogyny has reinvented itself as jokes and parody. It's not really vile, it's not really misogyny, it's a joke about people who used to think that way. So not only can they keep saying it, but if you complain they can say 'can't you take a joke'.

It is vile, and insidious. Someone needs to Tweet Tesco this thread

RoseandVioletCreams · 16/03/2013 22:19

is there a tesco complaint form?

HoHoHoNoYouDont · 16/03/2013 22:22

OP, next time you're in Tesco look on the back of the card to see who the distributors are (eg Hallmark) and drop a line to them too.

ChipTheFish · 16/03/2013 22:24

RoseandVioletCreams - I used this one.

First successful link I've posted :)

I agree that the connotations of 'little' are unsettling. Vile.

ChipTheFish · 16/03/2013 22:29

HoHoHoNoYoudon't (Love the name) I'm going to check tomorrow and email them. I've tried searching on google using the text from the front of the card, but it just brings up porn - shock!

RoseandVioletCreams · 16/03/2013 22:29

ok complained.

ChipTheFish · 16/03/2013 22:32

Thanks RoseandVioletCreams

Lots of complaints being bandied about over non issues. Don't like the card - dont buy it. There's far filthier out there I'd imagine than a play on words Micky take x

MidniteScribbler · 17/03/2013 00:05

I don't think it's that hilarious, but I don't think it's complaint worthy either. No one is forcing you to buy the card.

My perspective might be skewed somewhat, being a dog breeder. "Bitch" is a word commonly used in conversation when talking, so I guess I'm immune to it.

YouTheCat · 17/03/2013 00:06

I don't find it funny. It's not my sort of humour. But it really isn't worth complaining about.

MyDarlingClementine · 17/03/2013 00:10

not worth it to you the cat or szeli

thankfully worth it to others.

LineRunner · 17/03/2013 00:12

yuck

BOF · 17/03/2013 00:18

That's horrible, and totally inappropriate for a supermarket.

ifancyashandy · 17/03/2013 00:43

D'ya know, sometimes it really is important to sweat the small stuff. The little 'drip drip drip' bits of 'comedy' sexism that pass by unnoticed and reinforce & uphold the 'women are sex objects to be ridiculed' mentality.

Have complained.

SkinnybitchWannabe · 17/03/2013 06:31

Yabu, don't like, don't read or buy it.
Not worth complaining about at all.
Peoples sense of humour are all different so someone will think it's funny, me included.

Buzzardbird · 17/03/2013 06:44

It is vile. Also take the name of the publisher off the back of the card and complain to them as they will be in every card shop on the high street.

AnaisB · 17/03/2013 06:47

Yanbu, it's horrible

Buzzardbird · 17/03/2013 06:51

Sorry, cross posted. The publisher will be the one to address as designs change monthly in most publishers and Tesco won't have a clue about the latest designs as there are too many to individually vet.
if you bring it to Tesco's attention too though the publisher will have to seriously re-think its humour in order to not lose the contract so would help in the grander scale of things.

ravenAK · 17/03/2013 06:59

Agree with ifancyashandy.

It's a spectacularly unpleasant line, actually. Ugh.

PassTheTwiglets · 17/03/2013 07:00

I don't understand the 'if you don't like it then don't buy it' comments. The point is not that cards like this should not exist in the first place!
