to think this is the stupidest place ever to leave a parcel?

This morning, a Hermes delivery man called round with a parcel for us.

DH & I were both out, so no-one in to accept the parcel. Because it's bin day and recycling week, our recycling wheelie bin was at the end of the drive, waiting for the binmen to come along and empty it.

For whatever crazy reason, the Hermes man decided that the best thing to do with our parcel was to leave it in the as yet unemptied wheelie bin. And then he helpfully posted one of those cards through the door. "Sorry I missed you - your parcel was left in the..... Bin"

Luckily for the parcel, DH went home early because he was feeling very ill (not lucky for DH), and rescued the parcel before the bin men turned up - they get to our house quite late on, also luckily.

But really. Surely most delivery people would think "Hmm. There's a bin at the end of almost every driveway on this road. Perhaps it's bin day? Better not leave the parcel in the bin, just in case."

AIBU to think that this deliveryman is completely brainless?

Yanbu

Why oh why would you leave it in a full bin????

LivingInAPinkBauble · 14/03/2013 21:13

Oh good, someone else has had this too! Ours was Hermes in our old house, luckily our lovely neighbour saw thm put it in the garden bin and rescued it. YANBU

suebfg · 14/03/2013 21:14

I had a parcel left in our bin too so I complained to John Lewis and they gave me a £10 voucher

TotallyEggFlipped · 14/03/2013 21:15

I would be so tempted to contact them and say the parcel was collected by the bin men .

AuntySib · 14/03/2013 21:15

Exactly the same happened to me, with the same delivery company. Only the note they put through the door was so scrawled i couldnt read it - 2 days later worked out it said in "box" - we don't have a recycling box but a huge big dustbin, which sadly was emptied!
Why would you put a parcel in a bin? Especially when there is a binshed which is easier to get to!

MsWinnieBaygo · 14/03/2013 21:17

Yep, idiotic. I'd complain if I were you - at least it might stop the tool from doing it again

Empty bin - Ok
Bin waiting to be emptied - beyond stupidity

PurpleStorm · 14/03/2013 21:17

I'm wondering if I should complain too, suebfg - not in the hope of getting a £10 voucher (although that sounds pretty good) - but in case they do this again and we're not home in time to rescue the parcel!

We ask our postie to leave stuff in the recycling wheelie bin... But then ours needs to be brought out of the estate for collection so no chance of it being accidentally done on bin day!

MammaTJ · 14/03/2013 21:19

I would deny all knowledge of delivery (got home after bins had been emptied) and demand another, then send back as unsuitable. Grin

Geekster · 14/03/2013 21:20

YANBU it's not difficult to see that the bin is about to be emptied if its full! Really makes you wonder sometimes.

ENormaSnob · 14/03/2013 21:20

Yanbu at all.

I ordered from the book people (not sure which delivery company they use) and my parcel was left ooutside the front door, in the rain, in full view of anyone walking past Hmm

Wewereherefirst · 14/03/2013 21:20

I would be tempted to put a note on the door saying 'do not put parcels in the bin you idiotic twat'

zoobaby · 14/03/2013 21:21

What a total idjit! Unbelievable, but surprisingly not surprising (if that makes sense). Some people truly make you wonder how they can manage to tie their shoelaces.

NorbertDentressangle · 14/03/2013 21:21

The only thing that surprises me here is that it wasn't Yodel!

ceeveebee · 14/03/2013 21:22

We once had a myhermes delivery left in our dustbin. Which was full of nappy sacks as we have one bin for nappies (baby twins) and one for everything else. I'm surprised the smell didn't knock him out tbh!

bigbluebus · 14/03/2013 21:29

Our Postman, Hermes delivery chap and Yodel all leave our parcels in the same hiding place - even though we have never asked them to leave stuff there.
Another company, who bring an order monthly, left 5 boxes on the front step yesterday in full view of the whole street, as I was out when they came. The delivery note clearly states "if out, leave around the back"!

ozymandiusking · 14/03/2013 21:40

Last Christmas,Yodel who are absolutely stupid, left a delivery from Amazon on the doorstep. We live in a terraced house, no front garden, fronts right on to the street. Some some scrote just picks up a very expensive food steamer and a Christmas cd, and walks off with it!

And to add insult to injury the person across the street said, "oh I saw him leave that," didn't take it in though. I had some time previously taken in his now wifes bridesmaids dresses from Next! Not again!

Amazon did replace the items, but it must be costing a fortune in insurence, and surely we as the buying public must be footing the cost.

ErrorError · 14/03/2013 21:44

A couple of years ago, all my Christmas presents ordered from Amazon were dumped into the brown wheelie bin, luckily I went out later in the day to put something in or they'd have been undiscovered for 2 weeks until collection day. (I had no note through the door.) They were bashed about a bit and covered in crap. So, YANBU!

LilMissSunshine9 · 14/03/2013 21:47

I hadn't locked my garage as there is nothing in there to steal anyway. I was expecting some pillows from Achica I had ordered. DHL left them in my garage and posted the card in but didn't say where they had left it. On a hunch I checked my garage and there they were.

My sky wireless router was left behind a small shrub next to my front door - thankfully I dropped my keys and noticed it.

Lomaamina · 14/03/2013 21:47

To be fair to Yodel, we got a Boden delivery today, which they sensibly placed on our secluded doorstep.

On the other hand parcel post managed to first: deliver on wrong day a parcel I needed to sign for and then to lose it on the system once it was taken to local depot. 10 minutes' national rate call to find the parcel and to get them to agree to redeliver at MY convenience!

wrongsideoftheroad · 14/03/2013 21:51

Royal mail did this to me. In the food waste bin with all the fusty, mouldering food ffs!

5Foot5 · 14/03/2013 21:53

How gobsmackingly stupid!

In the past we have had a note to say a parcel has been left in the recycling box but only when it is round the back of the house and empty.

Putting it in a bin that is clearly out and waiting to be emptied - words fail!!

MrsMushroom · 14/03/2013 21:54

Oooh this happened to me!

I got home one day to find an uninteligable card...I saw the word bin...but because I had ordered new recycling bins I thought, they'd tried to delver them and missed me.

The next day a woman came with a parcel and asked breezily "did you get the one I left yesterday?"

No said I.

Shock went her face.

BUT I LEFT IT IN THE BIN AND LEFT A NOTE! HAVE THE BINMEN BEEN!??

We all ran to the drive and it was in the paper bin. Then she said "You should read your delivery notes!

Silly bitch. I was mad! I could have been away! And her writing was terrible!

MrsMushroom · 14/03/2013 21:54

Oh yanbu!

Raum · 14/03/2013 21:56

Royal mail regularly do this with us, even on recycle days. Amazon cardboard parcel in the recycle bin - annoyingly not even always the correct bin if there is more than one at the end of our drive as our neighbours sometimes double up :-\
