to think newborn babies are not gorgeous?

So a friend of mine just had a baby and she's posted photos on Facebook of when her DD was born - like literally as soon as she was born.

I looked at the comments and there was one saying - she is absolutely gorgeous.

She is screaming, covered in blood and goo, red and blue and with a scrunched up face.

Definitely not "gorgeous"

No newborns are.

Disclaimer - I genuinely mean this in a light-hearted way and do not think my friend has an ugly baby and I'm sure she will grow up to be an absolute stunner Smile

Whilst I don't think newborns are 'pretty' they are the most beautiful creations in the universe, even if they're ugly. So I suppose it depends on how you view beauty.

yousankmybattleship · 03/03/2013 10:54

YANBU. Mine were certainly not gorgeous when first born, they were all shockers. DD2 looked uncannily like ET. I would have expected friends to day they were though! I think it's just polite to say babies are beautiful - it doesn't have to be true!

ZolaBuddleia · 03/03/2013 10:57

YANBU! I see this all the time with newborns on FB, they look like weird misshapen alien creatures and people are posting about how beautiful they are! I think it's just one of those things people say.

sherazade · 03/03/2013 11:14

YABU my c section baby was gorgeous, she had pink cheeks, enormous dimples and long silky golden tinted hair that trailed down her neck.
my 22 day late vacuum sucked VBAC baby was another story though Grin

Hmm I get where you are coming from. My DS was gorgeous from day one. My DD was very very small and looked like an alien. But she is very gorgeous now.

Offcolour · 03/03/2013 12:06

Except for my own babies of course, new born babies are funny looking, but gorgeous anyway. I've just checked back at pics of my two when they were just born and I still think they look gorgeous bit obviously I'm biased. For a bit teary looking back at dc1s pics Smile.

gordyslovesheep · 03/03/2013 12:08

YANBU my dd2 looked like a hairy Yoda Grin

Whatsdoneisdoneisdone · 03/03/2013 12:12

YANBU. They all basically look the same. Some are worse than others. Most improve after a few weeks.
My ds (cs) still came out funny looking. Had had one eye all screwed up and at first I thought he only had one eye. Then he had jaundice and went yellow like a Simpson and then he developed this rash which the drs said was because his skin was really sensitive. He wouldn't feed so went all skinny and dehydrated. Attractive he was not. Oh and he was really really grumpy. So all his newborn photos are of him with his mouth wide open screaming, spots and a yellow tinge from the jaundice. Plus he was breech so he had frogs legs and a wonky bottom. Nope, not much of a looker.

Birdsgottafly · 03/03/2013 12:14

I always use the word fabulous, because every new born, animals included, are fab.

Personally i do think that they are beautiful, in real terms, not just to look at.

Synonyms for gorgeous are: splendid - magnificent - glorious - superb - grand.

Every new born is at least one of the above (but i think all apply).

ZolaBuddleia · 03/03/2013 12:15

My fallback is 'cute''. Sometimes am tempted to say "what a gorgeous blanket!" Grin

Tanith · 03/03/2013 12:27

Mine glowered at me!! Shock

I swear, a really withering "who the Hell are you ?!! I was comfortable in there, I'll have you know!" look.

mrsjay · 03/03/2013 12:53

yanbu I think my newborns looked like little birds Blush but of course you do not say OH GOD SAKE WHAT AN UGLY GOOEY BABY do you . Grin

mrsjay · 03/03/2013 12:54

I prefer my newborns about a month old they grow into themselves a bit more Grin

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 03/03/2013 12:59

Mine was unmarked (because born in water bag) and clean (because born in water) but had black alien eyes and cone head and I was a bit scared of him. He was very long and 9lbs and seemed very old and foreign in species. I still get a bit scared by new babies.

Toddlers are fab though.

Twattybollocks · 03/03/2013 13:00

Newborns are mostly a bit odd looking, it's the expressions, little squeaks, snuffles, when they stick their bums out to stretch, the adorable head bobbing when they haven't been fed in the last 5 minutes, that makes them gorgeous. And the smell of newborn is just divine. :0)

Twattybollocks · 03/03/2013 13:04

Oh and my last 2 emerged perfectly clean, poo blood and cheese stuff free, having spat them both out in 2 pushes each (would have been one push but the midwives made me stop so I didn't tear) they had perfectly shaped heads, not squished at all. First one looked like he had done 12 rounds in a boxing ring, but that's ventouse for you!

Meglet · 03/03/2013 13:07

yanbu.

They are cute and squidgeable, but not especially pretty. They look a lot better once they start to podge out a bit.

PoppyAmex · 03/03/2013 13:17

I had a c-section, DD was 12 pounds and looked fine.

DH and I thought she was STUNNING at the time and felt sorry for other parents.

11 months later we looked at the pictures and wondered why no one commented on the fact that we had produced a Japanese Sumo Wrestler. Grin

RobinSparkles · 03/03/2013 13:21

DD2 looked like Grant Mitchell's uglier twin brother and DD1 had a cone head. They were both red and covered in blotchy stork marks that were almost purple, yet they were gorgeous! :o

I think that newborns are beautiful because they are such miracles. They are so tiny and vulnerable and snuffly.

Sometimes they are odd looking but that just adds to the cuteness, IMO.

MooncupGoddess · 03/03/2013 13:25

Didn't Nancy Mitford describe all newborns as looking like a screaming orange in a black wig?

xigris · 03/03/2013 16:13

Gordy I know exactly what you mean! DS3 looked just like Yoda when he was born! This was a marvellous thing because it softened the blow for StarWars mad DS2 who was not at all pleased at the prospect of a new baby brother!

RatPants · 03/03/2013 16:15

Newborns are gorgeous, all tiny and cwtchy and cute. I love babies. Toddlers... Hmm... Grin

Punkatheart · 03/03/2013 16:17

My DD came out so fast all the goo came off her as if she had emerged from a car wash.

The miracle of birth will always be incredible.

YABU

BonaDrag · 03/03/2013 16:19

My c section baby was a very pretty newborn.

But some newborns do look like David Jason...
