AIBU?

to think newborn babies are not gorgeous?

So a friend of mine just had a baby and she's posted photos on Facebook of when her DD was born - like literally as soon as she was born.

I looked at the comments and there was one saying - she is absolutely gorgeous.

She is screaming, covered in blood and goo, red and blue and with a scrunched up face.

Definitely not "gorgeous"

No newborns are.

Disclaimer - I genuinely mean this in a light-hearted way and do not think my friend has an ugly baby and I'm sure she will grow up to be an absolute stunner Smile

That is true...my friend had a c-sec and people stop and stare and gush over that baby. She is gorgeous.

I called my DS a fat, ugly minger when he was just born Blush. Tbf he was quite swollen and bruised from forceps (and a chunky boy too).

He is utterly gorgeous now, though. Properly should-do-child-modelling blue eyed angelic looking gorgeous.

OP I agree, few babies are gorgeous just born. Elective/early labour C section babies do come out cuter though.

Oh mine was gorgeous. Might be motherly hormones but I'd never seen anything cuter in my life.

Apparently I was not only beautiful as a new-born, but unusually intelligent and observant as well. My Dad still tells everyone that he had never seen another new-born baby with such an appreciation of the beauties of the natural world (he held me straight up to the window to 'look at the trees'). Obviously those are all characteristics which have stuck with me for the last 40 years. Ahem.

I have a friend who when she had her baby thought that every other mother on the ward was really very jealous of her incredibly beautiful baby as they had ugly babies. it wasn't until some 12-24 months later that they looked back and realsied that there own baby was just as ugly as all the others Grin only we are primed not to think out own baby is ugly

Go and ask on 4chan, and I'm sure you'll get a different perspective!

I think they mostly all look like steak and kidney puddings.

My c section baby was a very pretty newborn.

But some newborns do look like David Jason...

My DD came out so fast all the goo came off her as if she had emerged from a car wash.

The miracle of birth will always be incredible.

Gordy I know exactly what you mean! DS3 looked just like Yoda when he was born! This was a marvellous thing because it softened the blow for StarWars mad DS2 who was not at all pleased at the prospect of a new baby brother!

Didn't Nancy Mitford describe all newborns as looking like a screaming orange in a black wig?

DD2 looked like Grant Mitchell's uglier twin brother and DD1 had a cone head. They were both red and covered in blotchy stork marks that were almost purple, yet they were gorgeous! :o

I think that newborns are beautiful because they are such miracles. They are so tiny and vulnerable and snuffly.

Sometimes they are odd looking but that just adds to the cuteness, IMO.

I had a c-section, DD was 12 pounds and looked fine.

DH and I thought she was STUNNING at the time and felt sorry for other parents.

11 months later we looked at the pictures and wondered why no one commented on the fact that we had produced a Japanese Sumo Wrestler. Grin

yanbu.

They are cute and squidgeable, but not especially pretty. They look a lot better once they start to podge out a bit.

Oh and my last 2 emerged perfectly clean, poo blood and cheese stuff free, having spat them both out in 2 pushes each (would have been one push but the midwives made me stop so I didn't tear) they had perfectly shaped heads, not squished at all. First one looked like he had done 12 rounds in a boxing ring, but that's ventouse for you!

Newborns are mostly a bit odd looking, it's the expressions, little squeaks, snuffles, when they stick their bums out to stretch, the adorable head bobbing when they haven't been fed in the last 5 minutes, that makes them gorgeous. And the smell of newborn is just divine. :0)

Mine was unmarked (because born in water bag) and clean (because born in water) but had black alien eyes and cone head and I was a bit scared of him. He was very long and 9lbs and seemed very old and foreign in species. I still get a bit scared by new babies.

Toddlers are fab though.
