AIBU?

to think newborn babies are not gorgeous?

So a friend of mine just had a baby and she's posted photos on Facebook of when her DD was born - like literally as soon as she was born.

I looked at the comments and there was one saying - she is absolutely gorgeous.

She is screaming, covered in blood and goo, red and blue and with a scrunched up face.

Definitely not "gorgeous"

No newborns are.

Disclaimer - I genuinely mean this in a light-hearted way and do not think my friend has an ugly baby and I'm sure she will grow up to be an absolute stunner Smile

Newborns smell and feel gorgeous, and sound it when they're not yelling too. Look? Not so much. Mine both looked like grumpy goblins, but were no less gorgeous for it.

Yes mine is 8 weeks now and sometimes looks rather like a potato.

I can remember thinking with dd "she's so beautiful..... She looks a little like a squashed alien.... But a beautiful squashed alien"

Hormones have a lot to answer for!

i have it on good authority that i was gorgeous when i was born, with a neat little hairstyle and dainty nails... and i can vouch for my daughter, she was a looker from the start... and grandbaby, i saw her when she was about four hours old, and she was gorgeous too. two out of three of us are still looking good...myself, i wouldn't win any prizes.

other people's babies are less lovely, obviously, but a colleague recently had a baby, and sent photos, and he's so lovely he looks absolutely kissable.

well maybe not stereotypically 'gorgeous' but definitely very beautiful.

I think you always think your baby is gorgeous, saying that DD was really beautiful as soon as she was in my arms, like a little doll, however DS was not, very big and wrinkly, with hands like hams!

I do remember , pitying all the oth parents in the supermarket who didn't have babies as beautiful as mine with DD, by the time DS came along, this had long worn off! Smile

My dd was a beautiful newborn! I was expecting a squished up wrinkly grump but she was wide eyed and alert with an amazing head of black hair! Oh and that smell! Brooooooody.

Our dd was gorgeous when newborn; she never had that squashed, red and wrinkled look (she was so covered in vernix the midwives assumed she was early although she was 2 days post term) and she was so alert. Set the precedent for her character as she's a proper live wire!! I agree that newborns are not always gorgeous but they are to their parents!! And agree about the snuggliness and smell but can honestly say the newborn phase wasn't my favourite stage. Hope I find it easier this time!

Pah!!! You didn't see my two beauties when they were born - gorgeous doesn't come close Wink

Yanbu, mostly babies look like grandads! Both dds were born with screwed up faces, and even though I loved them instantly, I wasn't blind. They weren't lookers. They are beautiful now. Obviously.
Ds was born a very handsome chappy.

They are gorgeous on account of being a new life - a fecking miracle in itself.

I had a CS, my daughters chubby face, was the best thing i'd ever seen.

Nope, I agree with you OP.

I personally look at newborns and think the overwhelming majority look, well, definitely not beautiful! Of course, I say nothing and coo in the right places... But in all honestly, I just can't see it.

I think it's one of those things that we're just programmed to see babies as cute, regardless of whether they are or not. Probably some cunning evolutionary device to get us to protect babies!

Intimations of Immortality:

"Our birth is but a sleep and a forgetting:
The Soul that rises with us, our life's Star,
Hath had elsewhere its setting,
And cometh from afar:
Not in entire forgetfulness,
And not in utter nakedness,
But trailing clouds of glory do we come
From God, who is our home"

I am with William Wordsworth on this one, and even c+p'ing this stanza here has put tears in my eyes thinking about all the wonderful babies who will be born today.

I love newborns! Not even just my own - anyone's tiny wee newborn (baby stalker alert).

My dd was yanked out by forceps and had two big whelts on her face. I suppose she wasn't classically beautiful (trying to be diplomatic!) But she was gorgeous and cuddly and adorable and innocent.

I love cuddling a new born even ds who came out covered head to toe in vernix and shit!

V broody :(

My son looked like a cross between my dad and grandpa Simpson when he was born.

Not even I thought he was gorgeous!

He's lovely now though Wink

I concur. Ds1 came out looking like dp's dad. I remember lying in the pool thinking 'please take this grey, slimy baby off me and give it to someone else'Grin. Felt better after tea and toast. He is very beautiful now though. But that's because he looks like his mother nowWink
