AIBU?

to think newborn babies are not gorgeous?

So a friend of mine just had a baby and she's posted photos on Facebook of when her DD was born - like literally as soon as she was born.

I looked at the comments and there was one saying - she is absolutely gorgeous.

She is screaming, covered in blood and goo, red and blue and with a scrunched up face.

Definitely not "gorgeous"

No newborns are.

Disclaimer - I genuinely mean this in a light-hearted way and do not think my friend has an ugly baby and I'm sure she will grow up to be an absolute stunner Smile

Mistress I remember looking at DS and thinking "I don't want that one! I don't want one that looks like that"!!

I'd never seen a newborn baby before so I had no idea that they all look pretty unappealing!

YANBU
I freely admit that DD was a wrinkled ugly little thing. That's not to say I don't find their tiny downturned mouths and apparent frowns sweet but definately not gorgeous.
Babies reach their height of cuteness at about six months imo.

I saw my DD's face after the head emerged < after 72 hours of agony> as she came down on her back, and the midwife shouted "Oh look". They had no idea in those days that she was on her back and I'd been shouted and and slapped for screaming for 3 days and nights.
First thing I noticed with shock was that her lips were black which I was assured was normal as she had not yet taken a breath. The second shock was when I could see she was a girl, I had a full frontal view as she fully emerged, as was sure it was a boy.

My baby (now 5 months) wasn't red or wrinkly, I wouldn't have called her beautiful because her face was swollen but she was cute. You're not being unreasonable, most women will say their baby was beautiful because of hormones kicking in!

Mine looked like a dinosaur after forceps and faff, but after a couple of days his head went back to normal and I became convinced that the midwives were being neurotic because they said he looked yellow and I simply couldn't see it. Even when they said he did have jaundice, I thought they must be over reacting, and it's only looking back at the photos that I realise how much he looked like a squish-faced lego man!

At the time I thought DS1 was the most beautiful child to have ever been born, in reality he looked like a pink caterpillar. DS2 was 27 hours old before I got a proper look at him and he looked like an old man who'd been punched in the mouth (resuscitated - not very gently -at birth).

In general I'd rather see a newborn puppy than a baby Grin

Dd1 didn't look squashed gooey ( was strangely clean) or wrinkly she did however look spooky given she didn't cry when she came out and when the midwives handed her straight to me her eyes were wide open and she was staring at me like something out of a horror film :o

Grin yabu.
Newborns are officially and biologically gorgeous.
Not all equal though. I genuinely felt sorry for all the others mothers in maternity unit after pfb was born because i obviously had themost beautiful baby and they couldn't know how that felt! Grin

I don't know what the baby smell is Blush

I think newborns are cute because they're so tiny and vulnerable and it reminds me of when DS was tiny. Other than that they look cuter when they pudge out a bit. But I prefer toddlers to babies anyway.

DS had a cone shaped head and he didn't have ventouse. I think it's just how they're born - he did come out with an arm over his head, maybe he squished his own head? It went normal in a few days.

In fact, within a few hours, looking at his baby pictures.

YANBU at all. I don't have DCs so am totally unbiased! Newborns look like aliens or old men mostly. Takes at least a month for cuteness to kick in IMHO

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. My babies were the most beautiful babies ever.

Dd looked like a little skinned rabbit, except her ears were all curled up tight (and took days to unfurl). I also fretted that she seemed to have been born without any nipples or eyebrows. She was very beautiful though and the missing items soon grew.

DD looked like my 90yo Grandad. It was uncanny. Still the most beautiful sight. She carried the wrinkled, squashed look with more grace than him.

YABU.

They look like little aliens - and so bloody beautiful! I spend too much time some time on birth sites reading birth stories and looking at cute little newborns. Especially when they're all covered in vernix.

Though some babies are more attractive than others, it is true...

They are all beautiful (once the blood/grot has been cleaned off)

Before we had children, my best friend and I used to wonder if all mothers thought that their babies were the most beautiful ever to grace the planet. When I had my pfb I remember talking to her on the phone and saying a very emphatic NO! I loved him from the second I saw him but beautiful he wasn't! It was a fast birth and he was very red and squashed with cross little slitty eyes. He looked a bit like some sort of reptilian alien. Within a few days he sorted himself out though, and was the sort of baby old ladies coo to in the supermarket. He's 6 now and the most beautiful boy in his class. Fact. I've since had 2 others and again, don't think they'd have won any beauty prizes in the first day or so! Grin

My DD is gorgeous (I'm told that by complete strangers, so I know I'm right Grin), but the first photo I managed to get of her smiling (aged about 10-12wks?), I think she looks like a molerat without the teeth. Other than that though, she is stunning.

Some truth in the CS baby thing I think due to the not being squished :) Everyone admired our DD as she had v intense eyes and a huge mop of hair when she was lifted clear - and her face was quite 'normal' for a newborn.

But tbh honest they get much more gorgeous as they start to lose the newborn look IMHO - their little features get more defined. I'm another one who thinks the first 6 weeks is a sort of torturous hell to be endured and then they start getting a bit more fun...

I don't know what the 'baby smell' is either. I've had three and none of them smelled of anything much, unless they had done a big old poo. (I love the smell of new baby poo, well, breastfed new baby poo anyway!)

My friend said it is baby powder that she remembered smelling with her ds2.

But I don't use this.
The feeling of their little warm, downy head on your cheek is amazing though. Ds3 has loads of hair and it's just wonderful Smile

And the newborn smell I didn't notice in the hospital but when I got her home - oh it was gorgeous! Like cinnamon biscuits! Wore off by 7 days
