To be pissed off at rotten Waitrose food before use by date

Angry

Bought pack of 4 chicken steak things the other day and use by date was 23rd feb.
Went to cook them today and the plastic had puffed up, when opened it stank of rotten eggs so threw it away. Nothing else in house so had to order takeaway.

Really annoyed at this as we aren't rolling in cash at the moment and food is so bloody expensive as it is! And it doesn't even last until the bb date.

Thinking of complaining to Waitrose but can't see what that will achieve. Gah

Take them back.
You'll probably get a free trolley dash Grin

babiesinslingsgetcoveredinfood · 22/02/2013 21:09

Complain. You'll get a refund & goodwill gesture additional cash. Quick phone all, what's the harm? Something went wrong, you can flag it up.

Remotecontrolduck · 22/02/2013 21:09

Oooh no, that's not good!

Definitely complain, Waitrose customer service is usually very good and you'll probably get some vouchers or something Smile

TeeBee · 22/02/2013 21:10

Of course you should complain, why wouldn't you. Fish it out of the bin and take it back. They will give you some fresh meat at the least.

ShatnersBassoon · 22/02/2013 21:10

Take it back for a refund.

Buy free range chicken from Aldi, got to be cheaper than Waitrose.

sittinginthesun · 22/02/2013 21:10

Take them back. I have had that happen before, but the best thing about Waitrose is their customer service.

Mmmnoodlesoup · 22/02/2013 21:12

Yes I will do, you're right. Just annoying when there's nothing else in. Couldn't really afford that takeaway. Makes me quite wary of use by dates though, as these had clearly gone off when I had bought them

Annoying but thread-worthy?

Mmmnoodlesoup · 22/02/2013 21:13

Don't think I have receipt. Just reading reviews on ocado app and seems to happen quite regularly

Yes, very Mintyy, very :)

You don't need a receipt.

usualsuspect · 22/02/2013 21:14

Rotten food in the mighty Waitrose?

Say it ain't so.

sukysue · 22/02/2013 21:15

u won't need ur receipt they are brilliant at this bought a chicken once and it was off they gave me a chicken and the money back!

babiesinslingsgetcoveredinfood · 22/02/2013 21:15

Don't need a receipt. I got nappies from sainsbos where the tags kept ripping off, about 10% of the packet. For a £10 gift card in the post/

TeeBee · 22/02/2013 21:15

If its marked Waitrose you'll probably get away without a receipt. Call them beforehand.its no worth their while losing a customer. I used to work for Waitrose, we would have been expected to rectify the problem immediately with great apology.

CloudsAndTrees · 22/02/2013 21:28

I bought something at Waitrose that went off before the sell by date. I live really close by, so I took it back. They told me their policy was to give you a new one and refund the price you paid for it. I didn't need a receipt, and it was very easy, no questions asked. They are nice in Waitrose.

dinkystinky · 22/02/2013 21:31

Take them back and you will get a refund

takeaway2 · 22/02/2013 21:33

Definitely take them back. No need for receipt. They are good on customer service. Really.

bedmonster · 22/02/2013 21:35

We had an ocado delivery a while back which included some waitrose mince. It was properly off. I phoned them to tell them as it was actually the second time I had had rank mince from them and they refunded and sent a £15 voucher. I don't buy mince anymore though! I have learnt my lesson and now buy the meat and ask the butcher to mince it for me there and then, it seems much fresher.

It's worth letting them know anyway, and Waitrose customer service is really very good IME.

Minty, half the threads I read on here probably aren't 'threadworthy' but readable nonetheless!

VincenzaOfSaragossa · 22/02/2013 21:37

Bah. I had rotten blackcurrants from Waitrose last summer (still within their sell by date). I threw them away because they were stinking out the kitchen, and moaned to Waitrose.

They said they could only help me if I could give them the barcode. No I couldn't, because it was in the wheely bin along with a load of other horrible old stuff. Still fuming now.

yousankmybattleship · 22/02/2013 21:38

Take them back. Any shop can have an off day , but Waitrose are amazing for customer service. Not really their fault that you chose to get a takeaway.

itonlyhappenedonce · 22/02/2013 21:42

Waitrose veg and herbs frequently off before use by date - drives me nuts but use Waitrose by work and always cook on off days so never get round to complaining. dh laughed when I read thread title to him as its one of my constant moans. A complaint to head office is on my Never Going to Get Done list!

Montybojangles · 23/02/2013 07:24

Waitrose have a refund and replace policy, so you will get a full refund plus a free pack of the chicken things.

DreamingOfTheMaldives · 23/02/2013 08:25

Take it back to Waitrose FGS, why wouldn't you?! Their customer service is really good - you will definitely get a refund at the very least even without a receipt.

I've had a number of meat items from Aldi which have gone off well before the use by date and they exchange them no problem.

munchkinmaster · 23/02/2013 08:40

Phone them first so you don't need to march around with rotten chicken in your handbag. I have tesco on speed dial and often get money off my Internet shop when they mess it up.
