to think the Saunburys checkout lady shouldn't have told me I look like I could have had my children at 13?

I am 32 in 2 months. I would like to tell myself I look like a young 20 something but the truth is sleepless nights and the general stress of children has taken it's toll.

I was buying alcohol through self service and she refused to allow the transaction as she said I looked under 25. I would have been flattered if it weren't so ridiculous. I haven't been ID in years.

I explained that I had my 6yr old with me so it was unlikely I was under 18 and she said I looked the sort who would have their children at 13.

I was incensed so asked for a manager. Manager agreed I didn't look under 25 but said he couldn't overrule a colleague. I asked him for a form to complain about the comment his collegeue had made but he said there are no forms to complain.

So I asked for the store manager who told me I could complain through the careline. I asked the manager why he hadn't told me this and he was very insolent, he just stood there looking sulky and shrugging my shoulders.

The store manager then said I couldn't buy my shopping. So I felt as if I was being asked to leave the store without purchasing anything. To be clear, I hadn't been rude or aggressive. It was as if they knew the policy was daft and wanted me out.

But instead of leaving I went back round, picked up the same alcohol and purchased it through a different till with no problems. Surely this shows a fundamental flaw in their Think 25 policy.

AIBU to think that when I am stood there with my wrinkles and my 3yo and a 6yo and a manager and the store manager agree I look over 25, I should be allowed to purchase alcohol? How can a collegeue overrule a store manager?

Do I just write it on their facebook page?

Before you do that , I'd suggest taking down all your own profile picture - internet is a funny thing - you might get a lot of hostile cyber comments about your looks.

I would write and complain. About the remark, not the policy

CarriedAwayAnnie · 21/02/2013 14:13

I am huffy about not getting my booze Grin

CarriedAwayAnnie · 21/02/2013 14:15

I might give the FB page a miss then! I think I have had enough grief over my look for one day.

If you complain properly - they will give you lots of money. Grin well a voucher anyway.

Then you can sell your story to the DM and get lots more money Grin

Then you could franchise it Bella and Best and Take a Break and do a whole fake photo shoot

hugoagogo · 21/02/2013 14:16

Checkout operators are responsible if they sell alcohol or any other age restricted product to someone underage; they can lose their jobs and receive a heavy fine. It is a heavy responsibility.

Managers cannot overrule them and rightly so.

Did you have id with you?

Her being rude is a separate issue, it was a really horrible thing to say and totally out of line. Of course you should complain about that.

CarriedAwayAnnie · 21/02/2013 14:21

It's not rightly so when she is just being cantankerous.

I have asked people as old as 40 for ID! I generally apologise as I ask them and explain that the older I get the worse I am at estimating a person's age. Many of my younger colleagues would be able to gauge their age more accurately, so I undoubtedly would request ID from someone that would not be ID'd in another queue. This does not mean I have issues or the hump, it just means I'm not sure the customer is over 25 and I won't be fined.

This woman was unbelievably rude and downright offensive, and if the managers were aware of what they said than they are unrofessional and ineffectual. Please complain in writing to the store and head office.

CarriedAwayAnnie · 21/02/2013 14:22

With the profits I could get some botox and then feel happy when I I'm ID Holly Grin

HoHoHoNoYouDont · 21/02/2013 14:24

Holly you sound an expert, have you done this sort of thing before? GrinGrin

xigris · 21/02/2013 14:24

At first I though she said you looked as though you must have had your children at 13 ie you look far too young and fabulous to have children of that age. Which clearly is a marvellous compliment as most days I look as though I had my children at about 65 Hmm. BUT!!!!! Saying you looked "the type" whatever that is, to have had them at 13 is mind boggingly rude!! Complain immediately! I'd have been RAGING Angry Angry!!!

BegoniaBampot · 21/02/2013 14:25

Fine to complain about the comment and the managers lack of information when you wanted to complain, but not about the policy.

if you go to the papers, remember to practise your sad face before hand! Grin

simplesusan · 21/02/2013 14:29

Wow how rude.
That is definately not a complement.
What do you look like I wonder.
Sorry I am laughing to myself.
My friend was told she really didn't look 30, however the cashier didn't then go on to say that she looked like the type to have a child at 13. How rude.

ILikeBirds · 21/02/2013 14:34

Morrisons are by far the worst for this ime.

They've refused to sell me koppaberg alcohol free pear cider before (i'm 32)

ballstoit · 21/02/2013 14:41

YANBU to be offended by 'the sort' comment

YABU to moan about not being sold alcohol...it's hard to judge ages, I've worked in both pubs and supermarket and hated that aspect of the job.

I'm 34, and have been ID'd several times in the last few months, once when buying a pack of cutlery in Wilkos (have to be over 18 to buy knives) and once when buying paint stripper (solvent) in B&Q. The other times were for alcohol, and most of them I had DC, aged 7, 5 & 3 with me. I carry my driving licence now, as apparently I look young enough to need to.

livinginwonderland · 21/02/2013 14:42

as someone who works in a supermarket, managers will always back up their colleagues on age-restricted products. if she thinks you look under 25 and you don't have ID, she has every right to refuse to serve you. having kids with you doesn't negate your age - how does she know they're yours, for starters?

if she really said what she said, you have every right to complain about how she treated you, but don't bitch because she refused your sale. challenge 25 is very much about personal opinion, but if you WERE underage, she'd have been the one to lose her job and source of income. she was just doing her job. the challenge 25 issue is seperate to her bad attitude.

WireCatWhore · 21/02/2013 14:42

I got a bottle of wine in morrisons this morning & I had my toddler with me in his pushchair.

Sainsburys do deal with complaints seriously though.

angelos02 · 21/02/2013 14:42

Were you buying 2 litres of shop-branded cider?

HollyBerryBush · 21/02/2013 14:43

I wish some bugger would ask me for ID sigh

thistlelicker · 21/02/2013 14:45

My husband is 36 and got refused in sainburys in cleethorpes! I almost peed myself at that! I walked in and bought what he was refused and I'm under 30

CarriedAwayAnnie · 21/02/2013 14:48

She wasn't doing it because I looked under 25 though.

If I did, I wouldn't have been served the second time. And if I did I would have been ID'd many more times in the past.

I haven't been ID'd in years. I must look old!

OP posts:
ILikeBirds · 21/02/2013 14:50

The thing is short of carrying a passport around I don't have any ID. I'm old enough that i still only have a paper licence with no photocard. Do they still do prove it cards?

beenhereayear · 21/02/2013 14:50

I work think 25 and I hate it when I ID customers and they say 'I have three children blah blah'.

I don't care you look under 25 and I need to see some ID.

I am just doing my job.

Just carry ID and stop moaning.

midastouch · 21/02/2013 14:52

That was so rude i wouldnt set foot in there store again. i hate that think 25 thing it makes no sence to me, im nearly 25 so i cant yet buy a set of cuttlery without id, which i dont have, so dh always has to get everything for me!

hugoagogo · 21/02/2013 14:54

She thought you did though, in her opinion you looked like you could be under 25. When you work in a shop it is your personal opinion that matters and your manager is supposed to back you up.

I was ided at christmas, I nearly didn't get my wine, but I had id. I am 40.Grin

CarriedAwayAnnie · 21/02/2013 14:55

I don't look under 25. Which means I am not under 18.

So employ some common sense.
