to think that the iphone's latest software update shouldn't screw your phone up!

Please do NOT download the latest software update ios 6.1.1. My friend has done this and it appears to have wrecked his iPhone5! He has been in the Orange shop twice and the Apple shop twice today. Phone is just over 12 months old so out of warranty. Had new sim card, been reset several times etc but all to no avail. Apple are trying to say the phone must have had a hidden fault in the 1st place for the software update to have broken the phone. AIBU to expect Apple to hold their hands up and take responsibility for either repairing or replacing phone? Crap customer service!

bumping as people with iphones need to be warned not to do this!

Dh decided to allow the update on mine this morning as it was plugged into the computer - luckily, it did not complete properly & I was able to restore the original settings.

Snorbs · 18/02/2013 17:31

While I don't doubt that the latest IOS has issues - I've heard it can cause big problems when used with Microsoft Exchange for instance - I am more than amazed that your friend has an iPhone 5 that's over a year old when that model only started shipping five months ago.

missuswife · 18/02/2013 17:31

My iPhone 5 still works fine after the update, except for the battery life, which has dramatically decreased. I used to get about 32 hours of battery life out of a full charge, now it's down to 24. Brand new phone, purchased in December.

VivaLeBeaver · 18/02/2013 17:37

The latest software update has upset my iPad as well, struggles to find the wifi at home now.

Startail · 18/02/2013 17:42

Last up date just refused to work on my iPhone 4S.

I wish apple wouldn't keep pissing about, they make wonderful hardware, but they really wind me up.

iTunes can be a total pile of unreliable rubbish too!

NotADragonOfSoup · 18/02/2013 17:44

My 4S is working perfectly. Exactly the same as it was before.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 18/02/2013 17:45

I don't get anything near 32 hours out of my iP5, never have, even on standby. In fact I don't think I've ever had 32 hours and I've owned all of the iPhones.

Manchesterhistorygirl · 18/02/2013 17:46

Got the update on my iPhone 4 and iPad 4. No problems at all.

SamuelWestsMistress · 18/02/2013 17:49

I have an iPad 4 and iPhone 4S and they both seem ok? Hmm

Perhaps they'll attack me tonight as I sleep and chop me up and turn me into a curry. Then it will wish I hadn't done it! Sad

GwendolineMaryLacey · 18/02/2013 17:51

Mine's not asking for an update. It seems my phone can't be arsed :o

50shadesofpink · 18/02/2013 17:55

My DH has the 4S and it totally screwed his phone up downloaded the latest software! He had to restore to original settings and lost a lot of his data - even restoring from back up didn't get all his contacts back as his iCloud was full and hadn't obviously stored latest info. His main concern was text messages which have all been wiped and were all to do with his business. He's not a happy bunny!

TrinityRhino · 18/02/2013 17:56

I've done it, works fine
and iphone 5s are not more than a year old

InLoveWithDavidTennant · 18/02/2013 18:02

oh god... i hate itunes and really dread getting the "update software" crap for my ipod. i havent done the most rescent (i dont think) but ive been having problems ever since i did my last one.

apps crashing, drops signal, battery life, and i cant even get in the itunes app cause as soon as i touch anything, it kicks me out. plus... it has taken up so much of my storage now. 8g my bottom... its more 5.something Angry

love my ipod... i just cant stand dealing with apple and their crappy crap software! Angry

one update reset my ipod back to factory settings... i was so not impressed!!

Gintonic · 18/02/2013 18:04

Thanks for the warning, a previous update resulted in me losing all my photos and video, including irreplaceable pics of my newborn. Grrr!

hellsbells99 · 18/02/2013 18:07

sorry I meant iPhone 4s
but still screwed!

Oh, just read upthread about restore not restoring everything - eek! Mine is an iPhone 4 don't know if it's an s or not Blush

I did think 5's were more recent than a year ago, but put my thinking down to time speeding up with age [old gimmer emotion]

PetiteRaleuse · 18/02/2013 18:11

I haven't updated from the old version which had the excellent youtube app. And certainly won't now. I am sick of iProducts crashing just outside of warranty.

missuswife · 18/02/2013 18:12

GwendolineMaryLacey, I barely ever make calls, generally just a few texts per day, and maybe 4 hours tops using Facebook and Safari. I've turned off push email/calendar, etc. Is that average usage or lower?

Previous battery life may have been less than 32 hours, but I definitely never used to have to charge it so frequently before. I have to do a full charge every night now. I've been taking screen shots and the battery percentage has dropped 15% since I unplugged it from the wall 1.5 hours ago. I've only spent about 15 minutes on Safari in that time. Am I doing something wrong?

jendot · 18/02/2013 18:20

The update wiped EVERYTHING from my phone! I then had to spend ages trying to restore it from the computer! Sorted now but I shan't be agreeing to an update again!

ChewinTheFat · 18/02/2013 18:41

Mine is fine (4s) updated yesterday and no problems.

thesnootyfox · 18/02/2013 20:50

I updated mine yesterday. It deleted all my emails and iTunes stuff, bit annoyed about the emails.

I was told in advance to back up all the photos but they are still there.

I didn't want to upgrade but my eBay account and other apps had stopped working so I had to.

It is one of the things that annoys me with the iPhone. I'm not that savvy when it comes to technology and don't understand what it's all about really.

Ghostsgowoooh · 18/02/2013 21:00

It's upset my iPod too, never getting anything from apple again

funkybuddah · 18/02/2013 21:04

There is a fix update now

SmiteYouWithThunderbolts · 18/02/2013 21:06

Smart phones are like miniature computers and you have to treat them as such. Would you install a massive software update on your PC without backing up all your documents first? I bloody wouldn't, and I apply the same logic to my phone.

That said, Apple's latest iOS has made my iPhone 4 really sluggish and I'm pissed off with it. When I upgrade, I will get a Samsung instead.
