DS came home with a letter today informing me that his whole year group is going to a sporting event - indoor athletics sort of thing at the secondary school his school feeds into.

The letter gave all details and then included the immortal comment - please ensure all PE kit is freshly washed (no problem there) and ironed.....

AIBU to add - Sorry but I don't iron to the reply slip?

Disclaimer - I have no real intention to do it but DS's school is really pissing me off at the moment and I REALLY REALLY want to! Also they will be travelling on a bus in said PE kit so even if it was ironed before they arrived in school it will look all crumpled and lived in by the time they get to the event. [insert childish smiley]

It's all in the folding, anyway.

poppy283 · 31/01/2013 16:46

Who in their right mind would iron a pe kit? Madness, Yanbu.

Annunziata · 31/01/2013 16:47

It's a bit childish.

It'd only take two seconds to iron a PE kit anyway.

neverputasockinatoaster · 31/01/2013 16:50

Ah but Annunziata first I'd have to find the iron, then I'd have to dig the ironing board out of the cubby hole it lives in... said cubby hole is currently hidden behind a mound of stuff I was hiding from my mum last time she stayed.... so that would take AGES!

I'm NOT actually going to write it - I just WANT to write it.

I would add "DS's kit wont be ironed as ironing sportswear is a sign of a life being wasted."

Honestly, do people really iron clothes to do sports in??? Really honestly???

BobbiFleckmann · 31/01/2013 16:51

if you're ironing in two seconds, it's not done properly so the safest option is simply not to bother. it's clothes to get crumpled and muddy. I wish you would write it, from us ALL.

Annunziata · 31/01/2013 16:52

Eh, I iron everything, I don't get the big deal. They could write far worse things!

sukysue · 31/01/2013 16:52

I would have to scrape the burnt nylon off my iron from the last time I ironed the PE kit, before I could iron this one.. not worth it yanbu op

littlewhitebag · 31/01/2013 16:53

I never iron sports kit of any kind. Just don't do it.

sue52 · 31/01/2013 16:53

I love ironing. I even iron tea towels. If you lived near me, I'd offer to do it for you.

valiumredhead · 31/01/2013 16:53

I think it's fair enough - they mean have the kit presentable not screwed up and fished out of the ironing basket as the kids are representing the school.

eggandcress · 31/01/2013 16:57

Just write that the PE kit will be "radiator smoothed"

CecilyP · 31/01/2013 16:57

No need to write anything. As long as the PE kit is reasonably presentable, I am sure nobody will realise you didn't iron it. OTOH, if you really want to, you could put on the form that, unfortunately, you don't own an iron.

neverputasockinatoaster · 31/01/2013 16:58

I do accept his kit needs to be presentable and it always is - I do a mean post washing shake!

I WILL have to iron it as DS has seen and read the letter. He has an ASD and worries about rules being broken so if I don't iron it he will be even more stressy and anxious than he already is........

hellsbellsmelons · 31/01/2013 16:58

Want Dontmind said - go on write it!

manicbmc · 31/01/2013 16:59

I haven't ironed anything since 2006.

neverputasockinatoaster · 31/01/2013 16:59

eggandcress - Grin

CecilyP - DS would drop me in it! Grin

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 31/01/2013 17:00

offer to send it in the day before so they can do it if its that important Smile

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 31/01/2013 17:00

I never iron, they'd luck out with me. My DS would be easily spotted as the one in crumpled PE kitGrin

At the dses school PE kit goes in at the beginning of half term, stays there crumpled in their bag after every use and returns at the end of the half term. The whole school looks crumpled!

DH irons his shirts and the dses polo shirts, if it was left to me they wouldn't be ironed either!

seeker · 31/01/2013 17:00

One of my beefs with ds's school is that the PE top is such rubbish quality that it has to be ironed, because otherwise it's so crumpled that even an 11 year old boy notices. And it costs £15.50!

simplesusan · 31/01/2013 17:01

YANBU.
I simply run into the gym in a kind of "Oh I've just been on the equipment and it has crumpled my t-shirt" sort of way.
Dc's kit is either tumble dried on vigorously shaken before being put on the radiator to dry.

WilsonFrickett · 31/01/2013 17:01

Oh I look forward to the day I get that letter. I haven't ironed since 1997.

bedmonster · 31/01/2013 17:02

I had to buy an iron recently - to iron DDs Hama beads Grin

Writehand · 31/01/2013 17:03

YANBU. I don't iron. Ever. I don't have an ironing board. I do have an iron, somewhere, I think. I haven't used it 20 years.

When I go clothes shopping I scrumple a little bit of the fabric before I try it on. If it crumples on a brief touch, I don't even try it on. The clothes I choose don't need ironing. My DSs wear jeans, hoodies, t-shirts: lots of cotton jersey, as do I.

I appreciate that lots of people enjoy ironing, and others think it's necessary. But I'm with you. Most things look ok if not ironed. Things that look terrible when not ironed are not things I will give house room to. Smile

neverputasockinatoaster · 31/01/2013 17:04

Thanks all - I was feeling a bit seethy..... DS is being horribly bullied and school is being as useful as a mouldy lettuce so I felt their priorities were a bit off!

I am grinning now and feel better.

I will not write the note but neither will I iron the kit! It will get the usual post wash shake, be radiator smoothed and then folded..........
