DS came home with a letter today informing me that his whole year group is going to a sporting event - indoor athletics sort of thing at the secondary school his school feeds into.

The letter gave all details and then included the immortal comment - please ensure all PE kit is freshly washed (no problem there) and ironed.....

AIBU to add - Sorry but I don't iron to the reply slip?

Disclaimer - I have no real intention to do it but DS's school is really pissing me off at the moment and I REALLY REALLY want to! Also they will be travelling on a bus in said PE kit so even if it was ironed before they arrived in school it will look all crumpled and lived in by the time they get to the event. [insert childish smiley]

Wow, sounds like the teacher / admin person who wrote the note is seriously underemployed if they have spare time to even think about ironing!

I'm also a clothes scruncher in the shops Writehand: if it creases, it's out!

I also can't be faffed with dry clean: everything gets washed at 30 degrees, shaken and hung on hangars to dry, or 60 if its sheets and towels, and air dried.

OP would your DS ever know you didn't, you could just leave the iron out? If you have one / can find itTf,fgfffffffgvv oops ... Cat

I had a letter from school from a head (older generation, 60+) about ironing the crease into trousers for boys. She hasn't moved with the times enough to realise that you can get cheap uniform trousers which permanently have that crease regardless of whether you tumble dry or hang up.

I think ironing pe kit is lunacy unless you actually enjoy it or want to do it. Personally I tumble everything and fold/hang promptly to avoid any need to iron any school item ever.

I never iron PE kit. I wash it, tumble dry it (in winter) or hang out and then fold it neatly and put in P.E. bag. Job done and looks perfectly acceptable.

I haven't picked up an iron in ten years . . I was irked that 1) She'd clearly been prompted and a gender stereotype had been applied and 2) That whoever prompted her felt ironing was a valuable way to help someone.

Just don't bother. As long as not really crumpled. I do iron the PE tops as they are so crumpled but only so they look OK.

I do not iron. I have liberated myself from that drudgery other than for very particular articles of clothing that I choose to wear on special occasions. No way no how would I iron a child's PE kit. Do they want you to sew it yourself as well?

That said, my DH does all the ironing in this house. He likes his shirts starched and ironed 'just so' and because of that offered to take over the ironing duties - he irons everything (finds it relaxing).

Don't bother. And don't think you'll be the only one who doesn't. Presumably he'll be taking his kit in a bag anyway, or at least sitting in the car or walking to school in it before anyone sees him, so that can be your excuse ;)

I don't iron anything. Well except for tops in that annoying thin cotton-y material that looks shit if you don't. And when I worked in a supermarket I used to iron my work shirts when I could be arsed

I suspect my DS's hideously over-priced compulsory PE kit would do that if you so much as waved an iron vaguely in the direction of the sweatshop factory it was extruded made in.

If you were so foolish as to actually put hot iron to nasty fabric it would probably have the same effect as if you'd just drenched it in Alien acid blood.

Ironing is a filthy habit and should be stamped out. I quit in 1987 and have never looked back.
I rather suspect that if my younger three DCs saw an iron and/or ironing board, they wouldn't know what it was
