speak to me of COUGHING

Anyone else got/had this?

On Dec 18th (I know this as it was the meet-up!) I had a razor blade throat and runny nose, this cold and (mild) cough lasted three weeks. One day off when I thought oh good I'm better, then last weekend terrible boilings and freezings and now the COUGH FROM HELL, dry and going on all day and all night. Ribs painful.

Anyone?

Yep, been up all night hacking. I never have a cough, this is horrible and wearing me out

valiumredhead · 29/01/2013 09:34

Benylin is helping!

specialsubject · 29/01/2013 09:35

best thing is codeine linctus, if you can get your doctor to prescribe it. Pholcodeine is the OTC alternative and may also work.

valiumredhead · 29/01/2013 09:36

I can't take Codeine Sad

jojane · 29/01/2013 09:37

Me too, razor throat over Xmas and new year and on and off since then and ten this week the cough from hell, spre throat, achy and knackered

Hullygully · 29/01/2013 09:37

I take Buttercup for the squill (yum), I now think I've got whooping cough. Have I?

OP posts:
Hullygully · 29/01/2013 09:38

have you been to the doc jojane? I haven't

OP posts:
Hullygully · 29/01/2013 09:39

I have had a cough and a cold on and off for months - from the 1st December - and just as I thought twas easing off it started up again last night. I just take loads of drugs, whatever I can get my hands on and pholcodie for the cough. My children have it too. I HATE winter.

Yes, most likely whooping cough IMO

NotADragonOfSoup · 29/01/2013 09:45

Somewhere I read that massaging your ears helps stop tickly coughs. Yet another useless thing I have stored in my head at the expense of something important.

jojane · 29/01/2013 09:50

Not even to doctor, just taking what ever medicine we have around. Tried the ear thing but doesn't seem to significantly help with the tickly throat.

valiumredhead · 29/01/2013 09:52

Only a few days, ds had it last week and was off school. I keep getting colds and get rid of them for a few days and another one hits Sad

IHeartIona · 29/01/2013 09:54

I've had a cough since first week of September. Lovely. Doc didn't seem too worried although told me to have a chest x ray. It is a lot better now though but not quite gone!

maddening · 29/01/2013 09:54

Me me me! Plus every time I cough there's a chance of my hernia popping out - oh the joy! Thank goodness for strepsils

foosty · 29/01/2013 10:07

Hully, I had exactly what you're describing over Xmas and New Year - it's utterly dreadful (made worse when you catch your 'd'h rolling his eyes behind your back after you once again nearly barf up a lung)

I did go to the dr eventually and he said my chest wass clear - didn't feel like it was though. And I was exhausted with it all.

One genuinely helpful hint I got from a friend was to take Piriton at night before bed - that actually helped. You could try it during the day but but might make you a bit sleepy

I had it for about a month, am better now

Attack it with copious amounts of zinc, vit c, echinecea (sp?) and go into Boots and get some of those liquid vitamin things that boost your immune system and/or help you recover after illness. Take Lemsip night or Night Nurse to help you get a half decent sleep.

Much sympathy from me, it's horrendous.

flamingtoaster · 29/01/2013 10:08

Cough from hell here too - DD started it, I've got it and now DH has it. My ribs ache and I keep getting coughing fits where I just can't stop coughing. I've been taking Venos Decongestant because it's one of the few cough medicines that doesnt upset my digestive system (though all the gunge is doing that on it's own anyway). It's absolutely miserable and I wish it would stop!

haggisandneeps · 29/01/2013 10:10

My daughter started with it on Novemeber 4th we are now on January 29th and she still has it. Numerous doctors trips and antibiotics later we are still none the wiser.

redlac · 29/01/2013 10:25

Another cougher here - my brain is being rattled about my skull

Do not buy Superdrug cherry flavoured mucus cough medicine as it is the most foul tasting, boak inducing medicine I have ever tasted

Saltire · 29/01/2013 10:28

One of the best medicine I have had recently for a cough was benylin Mucus Night - not the usual stuff on theshelf, but the special hidden-behind-a-locked-cabinet stuff.
10 mls of that one night at 7pm, I slept without coughing for the first time in ages.

LilyAmaryllis · 29/01/2013 10:31

Yes there is definitely a really nasty coughing virus going round (but not with the publicity of the norovirus). I know loads of people who have had it. I had it for 6 weeks and honestly I haven't felt so unwell for such a long time.

I had to cancel loads of work meetings (or just go by skype). The doc did give me antibiotics but they didn't help. Even now I don't feel super brilliant. So... I would say, take a lot of care of yourself, don't try to forge on through regardless.

ElvisIsKing · 29/01/2013 10:34

I was going to suggest whooping cough, I had it last year and it was awful, like nothing I've ever experienced

Have a look on whoopingcough.net and see if you have the symptoms, if the videos sound familiar

Hope you get better soon whatever it is

Hullygully · 29/01/2013 10:47

I don't have any mucus, what other medicine is good?

OP posts:
Saltire · 29/01/2013 10:52

I didn't have any mucus either. It really did help.

DumSpiroSpero · 29/01/2013 10:53

I'm on day 11 of this and off to the GP in a minute - haven't been able to sleep lying down for a week and sleeping upright-ish on the sofa is not doing the neck and head ache any favours.

Pholcodine pastilles are good, and original Covonia with a squeeze of lemon and teaspoon of honey in hot water.

DumSpiroSpero · 29/01/2013 14:04

Have you been to the docs Hully?

Apparently the virus I've had has left me with 'sticky, swollen airways' and I've been prescribed steroids.

Might be worth getting checked out, especially if you've ever had asthma.
