I hate tattoos. Whilst I appreciate everyone has a right to their own taste and choices I still cannot get over the fact that people have them in places where they are visible.

A colleague of mine has just returned to work after M leave with a horrific tattoo from her wrist to her elbow. How can she go out and meet clients looking like that?? It can be seen through tops and obviously below short sleeved tops.

What I really don't like is seeing lovely brides on their wedding days, strapless dresses and tattoos on their upper arms and backs..... urgh!!!!!!

Anyone else with me??

I definitely make certain assumptions about people based on their tattoos/sacks in the same way I'd come to conclusions if someone had well or badly dyed hair/no coat in a nightclub queue in winter/red soles on their shoes.

But that's different to judging them I hope. Get your sack on people and be happy!

Moistenedbint · 30/01/2013 14:18

""know a few men who have bought vintage cars but I think getting a tattoo to pull a bit of skirt? Really? You sound like it may have happened to you""

Nope, but have an acquaintance who fits the bill. Lost respect for him as a result. The aging process really terrifies some people.

I want to apologise toMrsDevere for my insensitivity following on so closely from her post. I didn't read the thread properly beforehand, now I have I can see that the timing of my remark was off.
Sorry MrsDevere.

I definitely know people who got tattoos for the 'wrong' reasons - drunk, wanting to look 'cool'. And now they have got Spongebob square pants on their arse for ever.

So I don't think that tattoos are always akin to decorating your house in beautiful pictures to express your personality. Sometimes, but not always. Sometimes they are the house decoration equivalent of hiring Lawrence Llewellyn Bowen on acid and you are really going to regret it in the morning.

But its sad that someone feels this discussion is so 'nasty' they have to leave. Bottom line is - if you don't like tattoos and are prepared to prejudge someone before you even know them on the basis they have tattoos, you are a saddo and should be ignored.

But if, like me and i suspect 99% of the tattoo dislikers here, you see them and go eurrg, not for me but I am quite happy to go and chat to this person, and that is that, what on earth is the problem?

LivingThings · 30/01/2013 14:52

I have two but you would never know unless you saw me in my undies (not recommended!). I like some on show but its not for me - mine are for me only. Some look good - some really dont. It depends on the tattoo and the body wearing it!

sunshineandfreedom · 30/01/2013 14:54

if you don't like tattoos and are prepared to prejudge someone before you even know them on the basis they have tattoos, you are a saddo and should be ignored. This.

Spero · 30/01/2013 14:56

I would agree with bringmeroses that I do make assumptions based on what people wear and how they act - so do we all, life would be impossible otherwise. But I hope I am careful not to let that slide into 'judgment' - that has to wait until I actually interact with the person and get a better idea of what they are like.

AgathaF · 30/01/2013 15:02

Jaxxcy - There's nothing nicer than a toned beach body with golden glistening flesh

FFS - are you for real??

Spero · 30/01/2013 16:10

She has an opinion about what body type she likes!

When I last checked, that was quite legal. So long as she doesn't want to round up and shoot all us more doughy less glistening types, she can like what she wants.

StuntGirl · 30/01/2013 16:17

Well, tattoo or no tattoo Jaxxcy I will never be able to fulfil your ideal of perfect beauty as my body will never be toned, glistening or golden! But that's ok with me. I would hope my idea of beauty, whether or not they agree, is ok with others too.

In a way, so what if tattoos don't make you beautiful? Some people will never be beautiful, and they don't care/don't notice/find peace with that and enjoy other things, like individuality, self-expression or what have you.

Pursuit of a conventionally attractive appearance is not necessarily a good thing, and for people who fall clearly outside the perameters of 'conventionally attractive' for whatever reason, going down that route could be a soul-destroying thing. (I say this because I think there is a tacit assumption in some of the anti-tattoo posts that conventional prettiness is important and what women should aim for).

I said way upthread, I loathe tattoos (with certain hot bloke exceptions!), but that's an aesthetic judgment. So many people get them now, there is a real range of reasons why, so how a can a tattoo allow you reliably to judge a person morally? Mad.

chocoluvva · 30/01/2013 18:18

"judge a person morally". ?

EldritchCleavage · 30/01/2013 22:13

what?

Antipag · 30/01/2013 22:45

I think it's time to take off your judgy pants and put on your thong of acceptance!

sukysue · 30/01/2013 22:51

I hate tatts with a passion, they are imho worn by common chavs who have more money than sense. I especially mean the very fat ones who wear vest tops to show off their boob tatts in the freezing cold, men obviously find them sexy though, for they always have several kids of varying ages with them, a necklace of 'lovebites' and a never ending long fag in their pierced mouths. Nice.

Antipag · 30/01/2013 22:52

Sukysue I think it's so admirable that you don't make snap judgements about others based on their appearance.

sukysue · 30/01/2013 22:55

Thank you Anti.I knew I would find support here.

Antipag · 30/01/2013 23:03

:D

scottishmummy · 31/01/2013 08:04

everyone makes snap judgements based on appearance.even the holier than thou who deny it
whether its looking and thinking, mmm nice hair/dress or eugh look at that
its not the thinking it is such a problem its acting on snap judgement can be problematic

Moistenedbint · 31/01/2013 09:22

Sukysue, whit use on aboot? Ah have Chinese text runnin aw the way doon ma back.. Aw the way tae am arse crack like.. It's barry. Had a bit of a wobbler the other day tho. 2 asian blokes were pure pishin themselves. Said the text had been directly lifted fae the menu at the fuckin Peking palace (local takeaway). Personally think they're talkin shite.

(Just so you know stupidity works both ways......plenty of articulate people in this thread alone arguing both for and against "ink")

MurderOfGoths · 31/01/2013 09:27

"That's one of my difficulties with tattoos - I worry that many people with tattoos are not happy in their own skin - they feel the need to change their skin in a painful and expensive way"

For me my tattoos are designed and placed in such a way to accentuate the features I like most about myself. Rather than being something to hide behind.

LtEveDallas · 31/01/2013 10:44

they are imho worn by common chavs who have more money than sense

Crikey, never heard Samantha Cameron be described as a Chav before Shock. If she's a chav, God only knows what I am?

LtEveDallas · 31/01/2013 10:46

I worry that many people with tattoos are not happy in their own skin - they feel the need to change their skin in a painful and expensive way

Very happy in my own skin. My tattoos are in remembrance, so nothing to do with the way I look. Mine weren't very expensive or painful either. Certainly less painful (and less expensive) than childbirth - but they give me as much pleasure!)

EmmaBemma · 31/01/2013 11:06

Mine were HELLA expensive! But then, probably best not to prioritise the cheapest deals when you're paying for someone to etch a permanent design into your dermis. I can far more understand paying hundreds of pounds for a good tattoo than for a Burberry handbag.
