I fell asleep last night with my hair plaited, so when I woke up today and undid the plaits my hair looked huge. Thankfully I managed to style it so it didn't look too bad.

Friend commented that my hair looked nice, and so I responded with thanks but I looked like Marilyn Monroe this morning - (obviously referring to her big curls)

And friend shoots back - more like Marilyn Manson.

Another co-worker heard this and then they both started laughing and carried the joke on - in a laughing at you, rather than with you.

I can take a joke, but I am rather insecure.

OP, do you have a banter type friendship with this person? Sometimes people just blurt something out like that because they're pleased to be quick- witted iykwim. She would probably have said it to anyone in the same situation, doesn't mean she thinks you resemble MManson.

I think she was a bit mean but you possibly didn't express yourself very well. It sounds as though you were saying "yeah I look good now but you should have seen me this morning I looked absolutely amazing" - which might explain her slightly catty response.

Agree with Clarty - it's such an easy joke to make (and quite witty too regardless of what you look like) that she couldn't resist being a bit mean. They deffo don't think you really look like Marilyn Manson because they wouldn't have dared to say it then

Someone told my (five foot nothing, white with fair hair and green eyes and NO hula hoop) friend that she looks like Grace Jones. Few people in the world look less like Grace Jones. They're twats. That's all.

Are you sure it wasn't just banter - that's the kind of "insults" we trade in the team I work with - and everyone laughs. It's never directed only at one person, so noone is the butt of all the jokes (in fact everyone is!)
