to be slightly upset that my friend said I looked like Marilyn Manson?

I fell asleep last night with my hair plaited, so when I woke up today and undid the plaits my hair looked huge. Thankfully I managed to style it so it didn't look too bad.

Friend commented that my hair looked nice, and so I responded with thanks but I looked like Marilyn Monroe this morning - (obviously referring to her big curls)

And friend shoots back - more like Marilyn Manson.

Another co-worker heard this and then they both started laughing and carried the joke on - in a laughing at you, rather than with you.

I can take a joke, but I am rather insecure.

Well to them, you were giving yourself a compliment in the guise of ... what? Something negative?? Because in the looks stakes (not that I'm a fan), not too many would be using M. Monroe as a 'something negative'. Odd all round tbh, but their rejoinder doesn't overly surprise me under the circs. If you're a redhead and you were describing how your hair looked that morning, you'd be using someone with eh.. mad and unruly red hair no?

OTOH, I wouldn't overthink it :)

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 25/01/2013 22:05

Simply Red?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 25/01/2013 22:07

Is it really an insult to say you look like Marilyn Manson?

If you were told you were more like Bo Diddly than Bo Derek, then you'd have grounds Wink

HTH

Agree with the posters saying it's just banter.

If they'd have said you look like someone plausible who wasn't considered that pretty (I won't name anyone for fear of a flaming Grin) then you might have had a point, but marilyn manson is grotesque/extreme, hardly a real comparison.

They're just pulling your leg.

I would have taken it as a compliment personally Grin

Helltotheno · 25/01/2013 22:15

Bwaaaahaaaa! Simply Red, exactly! tho you might think that worse than M.Manson

Vendettamoon · 25/01/2013 22:54

I may be alone here, but I think Marilyn Manson is gorgeous. Tall and weird and wickedly funny and articulate. I fancy the pants off him and have for years. I saw him getting changed once and he saw me perving and smiled.

bootsycollins · 25/01/2013 23:03

God yeah if she'd have said Mick Hucknall that would have been horrid but Marilyn Manson comment was just a quick witted play on Marilyn Monroe don't take it to heart. Another thing most people are insecure about their looks, even if outwardly their drop dead gorgeous. Relax and laugh with them, if you can't laugh at yourself who can you laugh at?.

MajorBumsore · 25/01/2013 23:08

Like this OP?
Have you seen my manatee?

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 25/01/2013 23:27

Major Bumsore Grin - do you we've offended OP now?

bootsycollins · 25/01/2013 23:48

What if op really IS Mick Hucknall? Grin

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 25/01/2013 23:50

It's the only logical explanation! I think we should be told Grin

bootsycollins · 25/01/2013 23:55

Have op and Mick Hucknall ever been seen in the same room at the same time? Hmmmmm Confused

ravenAK · 25/01/2013 23:57

I'm with vendettamoon on this one. He's absolutely fanciable.

Just daft comments though, OP; possibly your friend was feeling a bit catty, but you can hardly confront her over it, so best shrugged off I think.

GlitterySkulls · 26/01/2013 00:00

i'm a bit Hmm about anyone getting so upset over something so trivial, op .

Vendettamoon you're not the only one... i love him! Grin

Vendettamoon · 26/01/2013 10:09

Hooray for Manson fancying! I so would.

ScentedNappyHag · 26/01/2013 10:22

Another one that thinks it just sounds like banter.
When I've had red massive curls, I've always thought of Annie rather than MMonroe! I think you might've just sounded a bit big headed, and your friend made a joke out of it.

HildaOgden · 26/01/2013 10:32

How did it even occur to you to say Marilyn Monroe in the first place....curls aren't the first thing about her that most people would think of when they think of her.If you were a platinum blonde with your skirt blowing up,then yes.But a redhead with plaited-in-bed-hair?

It was a quick retort/banter using an asociation of names (oooooh, get me),you are seriously over-thinking it.If there was any slagging going on,they probably thought you deserve it for comparing yourself to one of the most attractive women the world has ever seen.I'd laugh too.
