To think that children in year one and year two did not have sex education ten years ago?

Someone I know is adamant that back around 2000/2001 children in year one and two had sex education. Am I being unreasonable to think they are talking bollocks?

Yes they are talking bollocks. I was 9/10 then and even I didn't have sex ed.

HollyBerryBush · 12/01/2013 11:00

Personal hygiene lessons, birds and bees lessons? no!

MissAnnersley · 12/01/2013 11:00

Depends what you mean by sex education.

All children will follow a sex education programme in state primary schools and it begins at the very early stages. However it is age and stage appropriate.

But still called sex education.

Feedthedogplease · 12/01/2013 11:03

Thank for the replies so far. I should have said sorry by sex education we are talking about the penis going in the vagina type stuff. I was sure it was year 5/6 for that stuff but they say year 1/2.

We definitely discussed reproduction in the infants, 30 years ago. We had tadpoles in the classroom and talked about how they came about, and someone once brought baby rabbits in and we found out you needed a male and a female rabbit to make babies. Rural school, mind you, so most children were pretty familiar with husbandry I think.

ShatnersBassoon · 12/01/2013 11:05

I don't remember any mention of human reproduction.

MissAnnersley · 12/01/2013 11:07

I have never heard of sexual intercourse being taught in the early years of primary school. It has always been the later years.

However as this is MN I am sure there will be a variety of replies!

Completely varies from school to school & like pp said it depends what you call sex ed. In the school I teach, back then sex ed was only done in year 6 & was the school nurse talking about personal hygiene & periods. More recently (5 years ish) we switched to a whole school programme & in year 1 & 2 I think they cover stuff like baby animals (cats have kittens etc). Personally I think it's much better this way because it's age appropriate but stops it being such a big deal when they're older. X

Penis in vagina in year 5or 6? No no no no

In year 5 and 6 six it was about periods and how the body changes through puberty.

Penis in the vagina came in year 9 and that's when we did about childbirth.

I was in year 9 five years ago and my sister is in year 10 now and that's how they're still doing it AFAIK

bruffin · 12/01/2013 11:19

My dcs were in year 1/2 10years ago, they definitely didnt have any form of sex education until year 5.

Littlefish · 12/01/2013 11:25

Penis in vagina stuff doesn't appear in year 1 and 2 now as far as I know. Naming of parts etc. does.

Littlefish · 12/01/2013 11:26

Meant to say that I'm pretty sure it didn't then either, but neither is it in the curriculum now for those year groups.

Needingsomeadvice · 12/01/2013 11:30

We didn't get anything at all until late in Y7 at secondary school. Also that year, the Tampax lady came to talk to the girls during PE about periods.

Greythorne · 12/01/2013 11:41

I was a child in the 80s and there was no sex ed AT ANY POINT OF MY EDUCATION! Except when I was 12, the Tampax lady came in for a couple of hours and gave the girls only a talk about periods and tampons.

I am amazed I know anything really. in truth I was pregnant before I realised 'womb' and 'uterus' were the same thing

valiumredhead · 12/01/2013 11:44

At my school we had sex ed at the age of 6 so possibly not bollocks - that was the late 70's though.

I think it varies from school to school.

Ds is 11 and they are doing it (fnar!) now in science class.

sashh · 12/01/2013 11:46

Y1 sex education

A bowl of fruit is passed round the children. They are told they can have any piece they want. They are told they don't have to have a piece at all.

They talk about not taking an apple just because your friend has taken an apple.

The principle being that later when they are making choices about sex they will have learned to make choices as individuals not because of peer pressure.

lljkk · 12/01/2013 11:50

Not in class but by that age the children are busy telling each other all sorts of creative stories about how boys & girls fit together.

PaellaUmbrella · 12/01/2013 11:52

We had sex education at primary school, and we had 2 years in one class, so what would now be years 5 & 6. That was in the late 80s.

valiumredhead · 12/01/2013 11:52

Especially if they have that God awful Babette Cole book Wink

mslicketysplit · 12/01/2013 12:04

We had sex education in primary seven in the early eighties . That was in Scotland though. I would have been 11.

TinyDancingHoofer · 12/01/2013 12:58

Penis in vagina stuff was year 5 for me. But we did reproduction and watched a full birth in year 2.

ScarletLady02 · 12/01/2013 13:01

We had sex ed in Primary school, most definitely. I was born in 1983 so this would have been 90s. I remember the "period" lesson at around 8 or 9 and the sex stuff a year later. Only very basic re-production biology

Thumbwitch · 12/01/2013 13:08

I am oldish. We had our first sex ed lessons aged ~9 (3rd year of junior school, whatever the hell that is nowadays), back in the 1970s. I can't imagine them ever giving sex ed lessons to 5 and 6 yos though. Shock

wonkylegs · 12/01/2013 13:28

I remember my parents going to a parents evening about teaching sex ed at infant school (it was a very churchy school and was controversial) for my brother who is now 24. So it was around I went to different schools to him (am 10yrs older) and didn't get sex ed as a separate lesson we covered it in biology when I was 15Blush
It really varies school by school my DS is four and they have had discussions about babies growing from eggs in mums tummy already in reception (one of DSs friends is convinced that mummy may now lay them like a chickenGrin) , my DS is just convinced that I have a baby lying in wait, and as soon as we have a spare bedroom I start growing it!

boomting · 12/01/2013 13:41

I would have been in Y1/2 in the mid / late 90s. I don't remember any penis in vagina stuff being taught until Y5/6.

However, I found out about sex when I was browsing in a children's bookshop, aged 5. There was a book called 'Where Do Babies Come From' and it had cartoons of naked people, and a cross section of a cartoon couple having sex. I read it cover to cover, but I don't think I believed that people actually did that to make a baby Grin
