Catfood forks in the dishwasher

DancingDolly · 05/01/2013 17:46

Aibu in thinking it's wrong? Dp chucks them in and it makes me recoil a bit to see them sitting there with little bits of catfood on next to the other cutlery.

If I'm right, how should they be washed? How do you wash your petfood implements? Confused

SPB - so the food isn't redistributed around the plates etc while they're being washed.

TellMeOnBoxingDay - are you serious or pulling our collective leg?

I wash them first, then put them in the dishwasher. Lovely to know I'm posh though Xmas Grin I cannot imagine how having separate bowls/forks for the cat makes me posh [unfathomable]

Spero · 05/01/2013 21:55

I feed the unicorn on any members of my household who demonstrate displeasing levels of personal hygiene. He eats very well.

apostropheuse · 05/01/2013 21:57

It's the food the fork is touchng, unless you have really clever cats and they're eating with the fork of course.

As the cats' mouths are never in contact with the fork what isD
the issue?

I really can't see your logic.

apostropheuse · 05/01/2013 21:59

...I should say, though, that I rinse food off all plates before going into the dishwasher.

TameGaloot · 05/01/2013 21:59

Ooh I hadn't thought of putting my mooncup in the dishwasher...

Spero · 05/01/2013 22:00

seriously, if cat food forks freak you out, how DO you wipe your arse? Heavy duty marigolds and a brillo pad?

Rikalaily · 05/01/2013 22:03

I put the cat/dog food forks and the pets bowls in there. Dishwashers sterilise everything so it doesn't matter, I do have a seperate sponge for them for when I need to give them a quick rinse in the sink though.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 05/01/2013 22:10

The contents of my dishwasher gets a spaniel prewash if I'm not on the ball. After a full cycle at 70c, it hasn't yet killed us. And I've seen where he puts his tongue.

amillionyears · 05/01/2013 22:20

These things dont have to kill us.
But we can all get diseased.
And I dont know where all the diseases come from.

So far I am middle aged and healthy.
And I shall continue to do my best to keep it that way.

Yep, I expect a flaming is a coming!

InNeedOfBrandy · 05/01/2013 22:33

The fact that dogs eat shit makes me boak that their tongues could touch something I might eat off.

Actually theres so many things mentioned on this thread that make me boak, I probably could have tea at amillions though, she sounds lovely and clean even with outdoor cats.

InNeedOfBrandy · 05/01/2013 22:33

*eat off of

Spero · 05/01/2013 22:42

Of course it is sensible to take reasonable precautions about hygiene. I don't eat poo, I wash my hands before preparing food.

But I don't get the screaming mimsys about cat food on a fork. Because that is very, very odd.

I have had cats in house for 20 years and added dog to the mix last year. As far as I know neither I nor any visitor to my house has ever contracted a disease from my animals. I would be very interested to know exactly what it is feared you will catch from cat food.

Shouldn't put Mooncups in dishwasher, the detergents will degrade it.

I don't understand this disgust. Why not put potties in the dishwasher? It washes things clean doesn't it?

DancingDolly · 05/01/2013 22:50

I think loads of people are missing my point. It's an unexplained squeamishness. For the record, i've got no issues with piss, shit or other bodily fluids. Playing 'i have never' recently on drunken night out, and happily confessed to having tasted my own menstrual blood.
It's just catfood...

TameGaloot · 05/01/2013 22:54

Woodlice are just prawns that can't swim

Salmotrutta · 05/01/2013 22:55

amillionyears - why do you think you would catch a disease from sterile cat food which is actually also made from high quality meat?

And StrangerDanger - was you post a failed attempt at humour? Hmm

Minging...eating dead animals..my body is my temple. I leave that to the fatties and the soon to be striken with cancer ;) lol x

.... Hmm how very well informed you sound ... Hmm

Spero · 05/01/2013 23:00

Then you need to be clearer in your op! you don't make it sound like 'unexplained squeamishness' - you simply state that you 'recoil' and 'its wrong'.

We are just exploring those assertions.

Viviennemary · 05/01/2013 23:02

I never put catfood plates or forks in the dishwasher. I have a separate cloth for washing them and don't wash them with any other dishes. I know that is a bit fanatical and I'm not like this with other things but I am a bit with the cats stuff.

ouryve · 05/01/2013 23:03

InNeedOfBrandy - you were correct first time. The of is superfluous.

OP - it's been used for catfood not the litter tray.

maddening · 05/01/2013 23:05

Yabu - cat food is consumable by humans and is washed at 90º.

If you were a veggie household I could understand finding it icky but even then ywbu as it isn't dirty.

maddening · 05/01/2013 23:07

Ps shit, piss and menstrual blood do not belong in the dishwasher Grin

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 05/01/2013 23:08

I put my cat's plates in the dishwasher (she's Dearly Departed now)
I put my Guinea-Pigs bowls in the dishwasher. But they eat only vegetable based food.

On a serious note

Does anyone remember an episode of either "Vets in Practice" or "Animal Hospital". A cat was brought in with a very swollen lip. The vets were trying to work out if it was a bite or trauma, or an allergy.
Turned out the owners had changed their DW detergent and the cat was allergic.
Something to bear in mind. Wink

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 05/01/2013 23:12

Catfood forks fine, it's the bowls the animals have been licking that bother me. DPILs stay with their dog sometimes and I found DMIL washing her dog bowl in my washing up bowl with my sponge and it really grossed me out.
