Catfood forks in the dishwasher

DancingDolly · 05/01/2013 17:46

Aibu in thinking it's wrong? Dp chucks them in and it makes me recoil a bit to see them sitting there with little bits of catfood on next to the other cutlery.

If I'm right, how should they be washed? How do you wash your petfood implements? Confused

WhispersOfWickedness · 05/01/2013 17:56

I put both forks and bowls in, unrinsed! Shock

It's no worse than the other stuff in there. I have to admit to being a bit freaked out by talk of bodily fluids though, like loo brushes or moon cups! No idea why they are different to human/cat spit though Confused

Narked · 05/01/2013 17:56

How did you train the cat to use a fork? Shock

Autumnchill · 05/01/2013 17:56

YABU. It cleans them, it won't contaminate your other cutlery!

insancerre · 05/01/2013 17:57

YABU
Although the playgroup that washed the potties in the dishwasher was.

Midgetm · 05/01/2013 17:57

Hmm at a loo brush. Totally gross, but a cat food fork is fine. YABU.

also being unreasonable

amillionyears · 05/01/2013 17:58

ooh no, I am with op.
I started a thread about this a few months ago.
On advice from fellow MNetters, I bought plastic forks spoons etc from Wilkos.
About £3 for about 50 of them?

I always think about mad cow disease/cjd or whatever it is called.
Bits of doubtful meat can and I think does end up in petfood.

Probably though, no harm is done, but I dont fancy it.

HortyGal · 05/01/2013 17:59

The cat is part of the family, why can't his utensils go in with everyone elses?

ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 05/01/2013 17:59

Now come on! Think about it sensibly.

trixymalixy · 05/01/2013 18:02

YABU. Both forks and bowls went in the dishwasher when we had cats.

DontmindifIdo · 05/01/2013 18:02

erm, what do you think cat food is? It's cooked meat and jelly. Would you put knives and chopping boards that had touched raw or cooked meat or fish in your dishwasher? If so, why is cat food any different?

JeezyOrangePips · 05/01/2013 18:03

Cat food by law has to be fit for human consumption.

I'll bet you put things in the dishwasher with traces of stuff that isn't fit for human consumption.

Like raw chicken, for example. And raw pork.

Yabd (you are being daft)

DancingDolly · 05/01/2013 18:04

Well that settles it, I'll carry on allowing the meaty forks to go in dishwasher! I just needed MN jury to persuade me one way or t'other Grin

Made me laugh that some people don't have specific cutlery for forking out catfood! In our house it's a big joke to give Dp the 'catfood fork' with his dinner (clean obviously), to see if he notices! They're basically about 3 or 4 of the not so nice forks that have been designated cat food forks.

As long as he doesn't put the litter tray in then I think you're fine.

And people use plastic disposable, thrwaway and destroy the planet forks to deal with pet food? What on earth do you tink you are feeding your beloved moggies?

Worry more about wher in your home they park their bottoms and fur that has been llicked, etc.

I avoid homes where the cat jumps up on the work surface and sits on the bread board, and snuggles it's arse all over the pillows, but have no qualms about forks used for tinned food in the dishwasher.

cozietoesie · 05/01/2013 18:09

Buying plastic forks for dealing with cat food? Shock

Dear goodness - what's the big deal? It's fresh cooked glop which is basically no different to any other tin in the house - and maybe safer than some.

Unless you're running a hygiene airlock at the front door, the whole idea of separating is daft. What comes in off the street - and off you and any DCs - has far more potential for germs than anything you open for the cat.

If you're so worried that you have to separate everything that is labelled for an animal then maybe you shouldn't have them.

Thanks JeezyOrangePips, I was going to say 'do you put things with raw chicken in'?

The dishwasher cleans things using very hot water, much more efficiently than by hand. I put all the forks and bowls in unrinsed with everything else.

Commercial petfood in the UK is fit for human consumption. Why do you have pets if you are so squeamish?

Those of you who irrationally go 'eeewww' at the thought of catfood implements going in the dishwasher may be interested to know that if necessary, the major petfood manufacturing factories can be turned over to human food production within 24 hours if necessary - eg in times of war or other national disasters.

MrsTerrysChocolateOrange · 05/01/2013 18:12

Buying plastic forks to deal with cat food? I have heard it all now. It's just meat, the dishwasher sterilises and buying plastic forks to use up oil and fill up landfills just so you can indulge your completely irrational issue with cat food... It beggars belief.

fuckadoodlepoopoo · 05/01/2013 18:14

If you use special forks for the cat food then may i ask how you wash them? The cat bowls too?

I put mine in the dishwasher because its a high temperature and thorough. I see it as more manky to wash them in the sink. Not as hot and you'd have it all over your sponge, sink etc. Unless you use a separate sponge? A separate sink?!

Muminwestlondon · 05/01/2013 18:14

We are vegetarian though the cat obviously isn't. Her bowls and stuff go in the dishwasher with everything else. My SIL's dog is allowed to lick the plates in the dishwasher before they are washed which is a bit vile in my opinion, but each to their own.

shallweshop · 05/01/2013 18:20

I am defo in the bung it in the dishwasher camp. We use the same forks for the cat food as we do for ours and they all go in together. I have to be careful when I open the door as our dog always goes in for a cheeky lick of the plates/cutlery if she gets the opportunity!

amillionyears · 05/01/2013 18:21

Our cats are outdoor cats. Cats bowls stay outdoors and only get washed in a blue moon.
Because they are outdoor cats, they only need tinned pet food 2 or 3 times a week. So 1 fork will do for those times, for the week. Then I throw it out.
1 plastic fork per week is not going to make much difference to landfill I dont think.

Up to others what they do.
I dont fancy diseases thank you.
And can anyone really know and guarantee what is in food, pet or otherwise?

ahusband · 05/01/2013 18:26

Anyone that uses plastic throw away forks for cat/dog food is bonkers.

BikeRunSki · 05/01/2013 18:40

I get the pouches and squidge them in my hand before opening them. No forks needed.
