Catfood forks in the dishwasher

DancingDolly · 05/01/2013 17:46

Aibu in thinking it's wrong? Dp chucks them in and it makes me recoil a bit to see them sitting there with little bits of catfood on next to the other cutlery.

If I'm right, how should they be washed? How do you wash your petfood implements? Confused

unless the cat actually ate off them, YABU

This is just taking hygiene to the ridiculous IMHO. We have it thrown at us on every cleaning TV ad that their product kills 99% of germs, we are told to clean everything wash hands after touching most things.... People are becoming obsessed with it. By doing all these things all the time we are depriving our immune systems of developing resistance to bacteria.

Even Doctors will say that there are far more allergy ailments now due to everything we buy being sterile, vacuum packed etc.

I was brought up back in the day when raw meat was openly displayed and slapped on a wooden slab, before wrapping in paper... there was also sawdust on the floor in the shop, (for those of you wondering it was the 70s). Nothing was prepacked unless you bought it of the shelf in a supermarket... During this time it was rare that you heard of anyone suffering from food poisoning and stomach bugs etc. Even Asthma was rare as was skin allergies. So putting a cat fork in a dishwasher is not a big issue at all.

Please do remember that cats are very clean animals and most probably do more personal care to themselves as we do.....

This thread highlights some of the reason I don't eat at people's houses who have pets.

DunkyWhorey · 05/01/2013 18:49

Well done OP for seeing the light!

And its not posh to have seperate cutlery for the pets and livestock. If someone is truly posh they will happily chuck their horsey smelling blanket over their PFB to keep them warm :-D

DunkyWhorey · 05/01/2013 18:49

:D

CommanderShepard · 05/01/2013 18:50

Pet food in the UK is safe for human consumption- I ate Pedigree Chum as a toddler and am fine :)

SQUIRREL!

DunkyWhorey · 05/01/2013 18:50

Grin got there in the end, ffs

LadyBeagleEyes · 05/01/2013 18:51

I rinse cat food forks then put them in, like I rinse anything with a bit of food stuck to it.
But, my dishwasher is broken [sobs],
Since before Christmas [sobs more]
Do you know what it's like to wash all your Christmas dinner dishes by hand??
Do you?
Cat food forks are the least of it.
Leaves thread, still sobbing.

ILoveSaladReallyIDo · 05/01/2013 18:55

"This thread highlights some of the reason I don't eat at people's houses who have pets."

I agree re cat-hairy houses, just cause they're gross and make my nose and eyes itch

but dishwasher wise it's not he pet owners you need to be warey of, there have been whole threads full of people who think mooncup in dishwasher is V reasonable.. and my mum washes old toothbrushes etc in her dishwasher

DancingDolly · 05/01/2013 18:57

Just to be clear, it has never really been a worrying about health and hygiene issue, just, as I have now had confirmed by MN, an irrational squeamishness Grin

Do people not ever find themselves thinking 'yuck' irrationally?

OP posts:
ILoveSaladReallyIDo · 05/01/2013 18:59

of course, apparently my "yuck" reflex to mooncups in dishwashers is totally unreasonable and irrational Hmm

InNeedOfBrandy · 05/01/2013 19:00

The hair is the main part in fussy about eating from pet owners, the every day forks for pet food and licking plates is just another one.

cozietoesie · 05/01/2013 19:00

Well when I think of some of the threads over the past few weeks about how some males behave - particularly after a beer or two - I may have to reconsider my position over eating in houses which have men.

Grin
InNeedOfBrandy · 05/01/2013 19:01

Moon cups in the dishwasher is grim and toilet brushes and other things along those lines.

A salmon wrapped up very very well does cook lovely in the dishwasher though. Comes out very nice.

ILoveSaladReallyIDo · 05/01/2013 19:02

no eating at houses with]

pets
women of childbearing age
men
children (nit/scabies/bogie riddled)
non electric toothbrushes

eugh people are gross!

DancingDolly · 05/01/2013 19:05

ladybeagleeyes I feel your pain. Ours broke just before xmas. Have you tried chucking kettles of boiling water down? Seems our filter was blocked - probably with minging lumps of catfood Grin

I am funny about eating at anyone's apart from mine my mums and my grandmas. just strange like that

I find it really hard to drink tea let alone put a fork in my mouth unless I've been in that house and really really know the person. Quite often if I'm at friends I go and make the tea so I can wash my cup first Blush

Booyhoo · 05/01/2013 19:07

buy bag of dried food. open bag. if the cats want it they'll get it. no dishes required. job done Grin

stealthsquiggle · 05/01/2013 19:09

Inneedofbrandy you do know that's not normal, right Hmm?

lirael · 05/01/2013 19:16

I never put cat food forks and bowls in the dishwasher, but it's the result of a traumatic experience when I was about 13. My grandmother was dishing up Christmas pudding; the cat food bowl, wth cat food in it, was on the work surface; she was a bit short-sighted by then....

I can still, almost 40 years later, conjure up the smell and taste as I put the spoon into my mouth. And I still hold my breath when I feed the cat.

HollyBerryBush · 05/01/2013 19:17

I am going to horrify you

My friend puts her loo seat in the dishwasher

stunned face

ThinkAboutItOnBoxingDay · 05/01/2013 19:17

Yabvu

I used to work for one of the big pet food manufacturers. Humans eat cat food every day. A panel of human experts tests the quality each morning.

I also seem to remember that when they bought the chicken they used to go into an auction for the bulk buy. They used to bid against macdonalds. If macdonald"s won it became mcnuggets. If my old employer won it became whiskas.

Alisvolatpropiis · 05/01/2013 19:19

Erm...YABU.

Pouches are the way forward if it bothers you I think.

ILoveSaladReallyIDo · 05/01/2013 19:20

Shock @ HollyBerryBush

I no longer trust anyone who owns a dishwasher!

elastamum · 05/01/2013 19:21

YABU. Cant really see the harm but I am another one who feeds dogs scraps on dinner plates and then puts the plates in the dishwasher. No one has died yet! Grin
