To think this ebay seller was a bit of a loon and should have just let it go

Bought some baby clothes on ebay for 15.03 a few days ago and collected yesterday. Put money in my back pocket and drove over there.

Got to door, opened by a man standing with his hand out. I reach into my back pocket and pull out the 20, pass it to him and start digging a little deeper for the 3p expecting him so say just leave it like any normal person and he's still looking at me with his hand out with a 'wheres the rest' look on his face. So I take the hint, retreat back to the car to look for the missing three pence and sure enough it's wedged down the side of the seat.
I go back and hand him the three pence and he looks at me and says
"that's better" like a teacher scolding a naughty pupil. It all felt a bit league of gentleman-like and strange.

Is it just me or would you have let the 3p go?

Why should he?

He's probably been burnt before. Selling on eBay is awful.

NothingIsAsBadAsItSeems · 31/12/2012 11:09

Why couldn't he have just given you change from the 20.... 3p is hardly worth all that effort

yohohoho · 31/12/2012 11:10

I would have possibly let it go.

why did you need to give him 3p if you gave him a £20?

slartybartfast · 31/12/2012 11:10

well you should have had it ready.

BillyBollyBrandy · 31/12/2012 11:11

YANBU I have done exactly that - sometimes for as much as 20p Shock Wink

polkadotsrock · 31/12/2012 11:11

But you had give him enough money, how did he know you even had 3p?

slartybartfast · 31/12/2012 11:13

althogh i spose he shoudl have givne you 4.97,

LouisWalshsChristmasCloset · 31/12/2012 11:15

I did have it ready, it just fell out my back pocket. I also sell as well so I know how much of a pain it is is but If it's anything under 50p and neither of us have change I let it go. Whats 3 pence?!

He wasn't a charity seller.

That 3p will have been the difference between a winning bid and the next lowest (losing) bid. If you won by 3p you really should pay the 3p.

(I'm a bit confused why you paid £20.03 when you bid £15.03 though).

Having said that, I would probably have said don't worry about it. But if money is tight every penny counts - you don't know their financial situation.

AllSnowballsAndNoKnickers · 31/12/2012 11:17

Some people are weird. Some are not.

LouisWalshsChristmasCloset · 31/12/2012 11:17

Well yes, if he wanted to be that precice he would have given me 4.97 instead of a fiver!

OP posts:
issey6cats · 31/12/2012 11:18

how rude of him i would have invited you in because thats me and said dont worry about 3p and given you the fiver change and given you chance to look at the baby clothes so you felt you were getting what you paid for i hope the clothes were good and not all e bay sellers are rude

LouisWalshsChristmasCloset · 31/12/2012 11:18

*precise

I think yabu. He may not have had change. You paid the price you agreed to pay.

Its seems strange that you think he is weird for being bothered about it. And yet you still are bothered a out it today.

McNewPants2013 · 31/12/2012 11:20

3p is 3p.

both are at fault as you could have made sure you had the correct money on you just incase he didn't have change and he should have had change to give to you.

SabrinaMulhollandJjones · 31/12/2012 11:26

Yanbu -some people are very strange.

fergoose · 31/12/2012 11:28

I wouldn't have handed over a penny until had checked the items first tbh.

ShatnersBassoon · 31/12/2012 11:28

You think he was being unreasonable for wanting the full amount? Yet you'd thought ahead and got the 3p ready, so you knew he'd want it Confused

Alligatorpie · 31/12/2012 11:29

I would have let it go.

i am surprised how many people think 3 p is going to make a difference. ( before I get all kind of responses saying 3 p is still 3 p - how would you spend 3 p if you found it? )

Anniegetyourgun · 31/12/2012 11:31

I wouldn't have stood there with my hand out, but I would have said nicely "do you have three pence? I'm not sure I have change otherwise". It may be "only" three pence but it was his three pence so why should he donate it to you? You aren't a charity. (Besides, if you try putting 97p in the gas meter you won't get far.)

pigletmania · 31/12/2012 11:31

I would have let it go, is very petty

Cutiecat · 31/12/2012 11:38

I would have let it go. I sell a lot on eBay and sell as I would like to be sold to. He was very rude to you and I hope you mention it in his feedback.

LouisWalshsChristmasCloset · 31/12/2012 11:43

I had it because I was going to give him the full amount. I would never turn up at someones house with any less that I won a bid for. Just all seemed a bit bizarre.

OP posts:
ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 31/12/2012 11:46

I've always overpaid for items I collect. Note to self: stop being kind?

polkadotsrock · 31/12/2012 11:49

Still don't get it I'm afraid, you had already given him more than enough so why hold his hand out? He couldn't have known that you had 3p. How weird.
