To think a baileys dessert from iceland isn't suitable for xmas day and a bit cheeky actually

I'm cooking dinner tomorrow. One of us is assigned to buy veg, the other meat and the other pudding. So iv'e got a mahoosive chicken,a joint of ham and stuffing, t'other guest has bought carrots potatoes parsnips sprouts broccoli and sauces. So far so good. I phoned the pudding offender last night to find out what scrummy dessert we will be having on xmas day, and this is what she has bought.

It's dome a shaped cake/ice cream thing looks like a panna cotta on the outside and a gateau thing on the inside for 3 quid.
AIBU to think when someone has gone to the trouble of buying naice food and will spend ages preparing and cooking it, the least you could do is buy a naice pudding to go with it.
AIBU to feel a little resentful that they haven't even spent a quarter of what I have and the only prep they have to do is take it out the freezer a couple of hours before?

Am I being the ungrateful one or is she? Merry Christmas Xmas Smile

It's going to one of those things that looks great on the box and when you open it it will be the size of a doughnut, and all lopsided and squashed and poorly looking, on its sad bit of cardboard. Sad

I hate puddings like that.

I've just realised my comment sounds massively insulting to the ops culinary skills Grin Blush

I was not implying you can't cook a turkey Blush, I just assumed you'd had over cooked turkey.

JenaiMathis · 24/12/2012 14:13

I'm imagining this thing to have that special Vienetta synthetic mouth-feel, with a strong flavour of cheap brandy butter.

TheHoneyDragonsDrunkInTheIvy · 24/12/2012 14:14

I fucking love Vienetta

YABU I would be very happy with that, looks yum.

Floggingmolly · 24/12/2012 14:25

The other guests may well gave a similar feeling when they clock that your naice meat doesn't include turkey...

ifancyashandy · 24/12/2012 15:14

Fellatio that's exactly how I picture it too.

OP, YANBU. Chief of Pudding at Christmas should provide Christmas Pud, a chocolate alternative and a.n.other - I would do a pavlova with fruit or lemon meringue type. Or a trifle. And I'd bring all related custards, creams, brandy butter types. I'd probably bring cheese, dried fruit and biscuits too. And a dessert wine. But I adore sitting round the table drinking and eating after the main event or later on in the evening. Best bit!

Fakebook · 24/12/2012 15:21

Yanbu. You shouldn't have mentioned the cost of it though, because that makes you sound cheap and grabby. She could have made a nicer dessert at home for £3 and it would have looked more heartfelt, like she put in some effort.

FestiveDigestive · 24/12/2012 15:21

Ifancyashandy - That sounds PERFECT. It sounds like you take Christmas puddings seriously.Xmas Grin I was starting to lose hope, with all this talk of squirty cream and frozen deserts.

WitchCrafter · 24/12/2012 15:21

Be grateful. We all have different perceptions.

Alisvolatpropiis · 24/12/2012 15:24

I can see why you think it a bit half arsed. Perhaps there should have been Christmas pudding and another alternative as well as the baileys thing?

Desserts have never been high on my list of priorities at Christmas dinner because I stuff myself silly with roast potatoes and pigs in blankets.

MummytoMog · 24/12/2012 15:30

Sounds rubbish to me - Iceland deserts are generally a bit sad looking once they're out of the box :( we're having Yule log and cheese (and a pudding for the people with no taste buds) and it wasn't expensive or an effort, but does mean there's a choice.

SundaysGirl · 24/12/2012 15:31

Ha well I was invited round for a Boxing Day Xmas dinner since my older brother is working Xmas day. All fine..whole family going, he asked us all to bring a little something each to contribute. Still fine.

Text off mum, she is providing Xmas pudding and mince pies. Brother is doing turkey and peas. Therefore I will be cooking roast potatoes, roast parsnips, rest of veg, yorkshire puddings (yea we have those on Xmas), bread sauce and pigs in blankets. In other words preparing pretty much the entire Xmas dinner for everyone.

Hmm
SundaysGirl · 24/12/2012 15:31

Oh and the stuffing.

Whosaysitstheseasontobejolly · 24/12/2012 15:33

My christmas is ruined Xmas Sad

I didn't know of penguin ice creams I was ignorant

Now I do, now I don't have time to go to Waitrose to get some, now I don't have penguin ice creams

Now my Christmas is ruined I will look at my lovely laden table and just think that some people somewhere are eating penguin ice creams Xmas Envy

VivaLeBeaver · 24/12/2012 15:37

They should do a baileys vienetta.

LadyWidmerpool · 24/12/2012 15:37

I'll have it.

susanann · 24/12/2012 15:44

Ive bought one for tomoz and ive had a bit already! lol. Its bloody gorgeous! I can see that some people may not like it, maybe they should have brought another pud too.

susanann · 24/12/2012 15:45

baileys viennetta......now theres an idea!

LouisWalshsChristmasCloset · 24/12/2012 15:48

Yeah, I think I may have lost a few when I mentioned the 3 quid. The price I suppose, isn't really the issue.

If you're in your own home, you're welcome to eat what you want. If you are a guest at someone else's house and they are cooking for you, you should contribute something that shows your appreciation.

£3 dessert from Iceland = unthoughtful and lazy
£3 worth of homemade dessert = thoughtful and considerate

Sparklingbrook · 24/12/2012 15:58

But what happened to 'It's the thought that counts?' Louis is the pudding offender buying you a Christmas present? Perhaps they have put more thought and money into that? Grin

gazzalw · 24/12/2012 15:59

I can see your point OP but you might have a totally different take on Christmas lunch to your pudding-bringing guest. I agree that a £3 pudding from Iceland wouldn't float my boat but everyone has different views. It might be that for her it's the best pudding ever. Maybe you should reserve judgement until you've tasted it though? You might have an epiphany....
