I want it in my purse. Otherwise I'll lose the fucker.

And yes, young lady in Debenhams, I will make a song and dance about fishing it out.

Thank you nice lady in Marks who gave me the choice.

Fucking shopping.

wow, OP, what will you do when something really bad happens?

ChristmasNamechangeBridezilla · 21/12/2012 22:02

I would like the receipt expressly hidden please. From my husband and my memory ASAP if you don't mind. Grin

PickledInAPearTree · 21/12/2012 22:03

Have you calmed down now Mardy?

Did you shout cuntz at the choir and kick some puppies?

ChristmasNamechangeBridezilla · 21/12/2012 22:04

Flaggy that is appalling. I hope your manager stepped in for you.

OliviaPeaceOnMumsnet · 21/12/2012 22:19

@trixymalixy

I want it in the bag. Much easier to find that way if you need to take the item back, both item and receipt are together.

Me too.
Sorry OP

PickledInAPearTree · 21/12/2012 22:20

Flaggy that's disgusting! Hurrah for the nice woman in the queue.

TheSkiingGardener · 21/12/2012 22:27

The thing is, I'm a receipt-in-my-hand-please person. But I know I'm in a minority, so I make it clear by taking the bag, or asking for the receipt when they ask if I want it in the bag. This usually works well and everyone is happy.

So why oh why do I come across shop assistants from time to time who get stroppy at me not wanting my receipt in the bag, like today when the woman bagging purchases in John Lewis got upset when I wanted to take the bag that she was holding open for the lady at the till to drop the receipt into. It's not a personal insult. I wasn't casting aspersions on her bag packing abilities, but apparently not wanting my receipt in the bag was worthy of her ire.

Life's too short.

I've been woring in retail for 15+ years and I'm one of those moronic management types too

I have been spat at
at an iron thrown at me
been punched in the face
been told that someone thought my unborn baby should be born deformed because I wouldn't accept a dry cleaning ticket as proof of address for a credit application
been told I'm lying when I've said we don't have something in the back because I didn't go and check (my stockroom is 4m by 4m I know exactly what is in there)

I have to encourage the staff to offer -a bag, a loyalty card, a store card and an add on purchase, whilst personalising the service

and yes if they don't do it there is a possibility of performance management because it is there job and if they don't do it and I manage them, then I get disciplined for them not doing it -and I have to do it myself to lead by example

we have customers telling us we don't have enough staff whilst HO are cutting store payroll budgets

we get people tutting at us because we have put the reciept in the bag/not put the reciept in the bag, given them a bag/not given them a bag, made conversation/not made conversation

but we still
spend 10 minutes choosing something with an old lady when really she just wants to chat to someone
go and fetch a trolley for someone who is clearly struggling
take something out to someone's car so they can keep hold of their preschooler
count out the money from someone's hand because they are struggling to see it
walk all over the shop taking them to the particular item they are looking for rather than a point and shoot approach

I actually really enjoy my job believe it or not but there are some people out there that make the job harder than it needs to be

stleger · 21/12/2012 23:08

Dear me. 9 hours in work today. Making sure everyone had their change/receipt/credit card/purchases, and was offered a chocolate. Then I went and bought shoes, and was able to juggle my own card, receipt and bag. Obviously I an a genius, as I was able to put my card and receipt in my purse. Had I wanted it in my bag I'd have put it in my bag.
Obviously only the best work in retail at Christmas. Plus, i have a 16th birthday party for my dd2 tomorrow, food shopping on Sunday, and three days in work to go.
Get a grip, put it in your own bag, Merry Christmas.

lovelyladuree · 21/12/2012 23:14

I only buy online so I don't have to queue behind anyone huffy.

StuntGirl · 21/12/2012 23:16

yy!

NotGeoffVader · 21/12/2012 23:18

I want a gold bag. With a silver-plated receipt. And I want someone else to buy all the gifts. From Harrods. And wrap them all up. And make me a cup of tea. Xmas Smile

notsofrownieface · 21/12/2012 23:21

Well I had an epic day at work, 50% over target (and an inflated target at that) I am now enjoying a glass of vino.

And a small miracle occurred NO STROPPY CUSTOMERS

In my zen state, can I just say treat people how you wish to be treated. It works wonders Xmas Grin

stleger · 21/12/2012 23:21

Visit me, we have Celebrations for all customers and I gave someone a piece of our staff Christmas cake today Smile

EnjoyResponsibly · 21/12/2012 23:27

Also remember next time you make a cutting remark to a shop assistant that she's someone's DD. you're embarrassing her, and making her eyes fill up with hot tears just because she's doing what she's been asked by her boss

And then look round for the really tall, slightly world-Weary assistant. That's me. And I'm more than ready for you and all your shit. Feel all snarky and flash now? Thought not.

In my shop 4 of us were charming to a family today. Only after they left did any of us let on what utter c@nts they'd been to each of us (unheard by the others). We are hoping their heating breaks down on xMas Eve. karma.

RandallPinkFloyd · 21/12/2012 23:30

Well said Sausage.

I worked in retail for years and my biggest pet hate was people who put their money on the counter instead of handing it to you.

It made me seriously angry, it's just dismissive and downright rude.

I used to put their change back on the counter. The filthy looks I used to get were staggering Xmas Grin

judefawley · 21/12/2012 23:31

I want the receipt in the bag!

I spent an embarrassing, interminable amount of time at the till in next yesterday fishing around in my purse for a receipt for something I bought on Sunday.

It would have been so much easier had I put it in the flipping bag. But it did make me chuck out 30 petrol receipts!

PickledInAPearTree · 21/12/2012 23:31

Yes Randall !

Agree.

stleger · 21/12/2012 23:42

In the hand you get to choose bag or purse, so it is where the customer wants it and the customer is always right.

AmazingBouncingBabyJesus · 21/12/2012 23:43

I had a really grumpy, mardy customer today. WIBU to start singing Tis the season to be jolly whilst serving her? Grin

And yes money on counter bugs the hell out of me. When I was being made redundant from ELC I admit I used to just bung their change and receipt on the counter for them to collect.

I also hate people talking on phones or answering calls with no apology. I actually stopped serving someone the other day because they answered their phone. (I had a queue that went all the way round my shop and out of the door)

Blu · 22/12/2012 00:11

Jamie! Pickled and Stunt! I have seen the training manual . I know people who were employed to train staff in this in bid retail chains.

And then it was on a documentary.

StuntGirl · 22/12/2012 00:17

Then I assume there's probably a very good reason it isn't standard practice everywhere. Because its bollocks.

Besides, like I said upthread if you ask "Would you like the receipt in the bag?"^ 99% will say yes of their own accord, without me needing to resort to any tricksy ways. People generally like their receipts in the bag. Apart from a few moaning minnies on here Grin

Blu · 22/12/2012 00:18

stunt girl, I know you don't necessarily need a receipt to exchange something or get a refund, and there are. And there are many other ways of proving the transaction. I was in M&S last week asking them to remove the security tag from an item I had bought the day before and despite having lost the receipt which had been in the bag it was fine. But many or most people feel daunted about attempting to return something without a receipt . And I specifically said I did not hold staff responsible or be rude to them. I do not do that.

MurderOfGoths · 22/12/2012 01:16

Wrt to money on the counter, I actually had a customer throw the money across the counter at me once. That was lovely.

nickelbabylyinginamanger · 22/12/2012 10:41

I don't hand the bag over until the transaction is complete.

that includes letting them put their purse away.

It's the end-of-transaction-thing.

it goes:
"that'll be £.... please"
"thank you"

"do you need a bag?" (while the above is happening)
"thank you very much"
