Is utterly disgusting. It is the most vile, synthetic-tasting stuff ever. DD1 had a birthday sleep-over last night, and she wanted me to make her a birthday cake. As I was short of time couldn't be arsed to make her a cake with buttercream completely from scratch, I bought a packet of cake-mix and a tub of the vile icing. I did then decorate it rather nicely. The cake itself tastes nice, but because of the icing, even the kids wouldn't eat it!

It's nice on carrot cake. We use it as it is lactose free.

ChocolateTeacup · 16/12/2012 13:09

It is utterly vile I agree

festivelyfocussed · 16/12/2012 13:10

YANBU. I believe it's made from play doh. Wink

WelshMaenad · 16/12/2012 13:10

I don't understand how a packet mix saves time. You still gave to mix it up, put the oven on, wash shit. Whipping up done proper ingredients would take a negligible amount of time. Buttercream takes five minutes with a hand whisk. You live and learn.

Ilovesunflowers · 16/12/2012 13:12

It's foul stuff.

Fakebook · 16/12/2012 13:12

Agreed. Also, never attempt to make buttercream icing with Uttery Butterly. Worse mistake of my life. Yuck.

peeriebear · 16/12/2012 13:13

Not tried their vanilla icing but the chocolate ones are very good and have saved me a lot of slaving over a hot whisk.

MrsKeithRichards · 16/12/2012 13:14

I like the chocolate devils food cake one. I bake a lot but I still like to have a couple of pre mixed packets in for ease. They're good when your not totally motivated!

welshmaenad, it was more shopping-related laziness rather than baking-related laziness, I was pushing a pram around the supermarket and carrying an already heavy basket. Was easier to grab some mix and a tub of icing than having to go to different aisles for flour, sugar, eggs and butter.

Will avoid using utterly butterly for buttercream! In future will not cut any corners! Going to have to persuade DH to eat the cake. He likes eating rubbish.

It's vile. I believe the main ingredient is soap.

KvetnutsRoastingOnAnOpenFire · 16/12/2012 13:33

it's great for sandwiching cookies. not so nice on a cake though, where there is a greater icing:non icing ratio.

pigletpower · 16/12/2012 13:35

A Crocker of shit then!!!

HaggisMcNeeps · 16/12/2012 13:37

YANBU it ruined a lovely cake I baked.

Meglet · 16/12/2012 13:37

I love the BC chocolate frosting, have to resist eating it out of the tub.

wildfig · 16/12/2012 15:52

Absolutely rank. The only good thing about it is that it temporarily shocked me out of my furtive eating-icing-on-its-own habit.

although the chocolate fudge one isn't too bad

DoubleMum · 16/12/2012 18:01

It is vile. But the chocolate fudge one is quite nice.

UserError · 16/12/2012 18:07

Ohmigod, you are all MENTAL. The vanilla Betty Crocker icing (the one that comes in a tub) is amazing. I love it. I'd eat it with a spoon if I could.

CaHoHoHootz · 16/12/2012 18:12

Yum, I love the stuff. I also like cadburys cream eggs and foam bananas. I would only use it on cakes if I needed them to last a long time as it is very stable and doesnt go off.

I have the culinary tastes of a six year old

CaliforniaSucksSnowballs · 16/12/2012 18:29

They are all vile, doesn't matter what flavour.

LynetteScavo · 16/12/2012 18:32

Oh, so when I told MIL I had made it myself, do you think she didn't believe me?

I quite like it.

peeriebear · 16/12/2012 21:23

I spent ages making chocolate fudge icing for a birthday cake. In an actual pan, with actual ingredients. Took bloody ages. Tasted exactly exactly like BC choc fudge icing.

kiwigirl42 · 16/12/2012 21:33

Cahohohootz - nothing wrong with foam bananas either. I adore them. I'm currently concocting the perfect foam banana flavour ice cream for our ice cream maker (Cuisinart ICE30 - best purchase ever if you love ice cream like I do).

Pippinintherain · 16/12/2012 22:01

Ooh the choc fudge icing is DIVINE.
