Those poor children at Conneticut school :( They mustve been absolutely petrified. When will the USA learn from these horrific shootings and out a ban on guns

People make homemade guns.

ll31 · 16/12/2012 00:37

Squoush, I was saying trying to ban guns now I think would be waste of time --per sky there are 89 guns per 100 people in states..how could you possibly enforce ..

Re mental health, I honestly think people who carry out these shootings are unwell ..

Animation · 16/12/2012 06:26

Yes, people who carry out these shootings are 'unwell' or disturbed. Unwell and disturbed people reside in Britain as well - but the difference is we don't give them guns. It would be madness if we did.

SunflowersSmile · 16/12/2012 07:11

Not read all 8 pages but 'when hell freezes over' re no guns amongst public in America.
However bloody hell they need to try and tighten up rules.
Just don't understand this 'right to arms' crap but seems to be in their DNA.
Have American friend who is always wobbling on about his right to have a gun under his pillow/ carry to supermarket etc... terrifying.

CoteDAzur · 16/12/2012 07:59

"People make homemade guns"

Not disgruntled students with teenage angst. Those shoot schools up if they find guns lying about.

'Just don't understand this 'right to arms' crap but seems to be in their DNA.'

I know - it's like they can't review and evaluate 300 year old philosophy. Might have seemed appropriate then, but we have evolved as people, and value life and use more sophisticated ways of communicating and resolving conflict. Shooting someone isn't an option in this day and age, and more than that it's our responsibility to protect children and remove potential risks - like a crazy guy picking up his guns to shoot a class full. They are seriously behind the times and behind other nations in their immature thinking.

amillionyears · 16/12/2012 13:57

In America the debate is about stricter gun laws. It doesnt seem to enter their heads to ban them.

And the killers mum was a gun collector.

specialsubject · 16/12/2012 14:02

never. Just read the interesting statistic that THIRTY TIMES more Americans than Brits are killed by guns.

ok, there is no defence against a determined maniac (as we in the UK know), but it is possible to make it more difficult.

be grateful for where you live.

LadyBeagleBaublesandBells · 16/12/2012 14:04

It'll never change, sadly.
So many of these gun crimes wouldn't happen if the access to guns wasn't so easy.
We have had a few horrific events in the UK but nothing like the scale that happens in the US on a regular basis.

MariahScarey · 16/12/2012 14:05

they are chuffing loons about guns arent they

GrimmaTheNome · 17/12/2012 08:48

Just read the interesting statistic that THIRTY TIMES more Americans than Brits are killed by guns.

and from what I heard on R4 this morning, 13 times more kids than in other industrialized countries.

So now the anti-gun control types are saying that the real problem is mental health care. I wonder what the venn diagram would look like of people who don't want gun control and those who don't want a proper healthcare system? (I can't believe that an insurance-based system does a good job for MH issues). Anyone else reckon there would be a high degree of overlap?

CheerfulYank · 18/12/2012 05:14

The thing is, it often isn't "Joe Shmoe in Hicksville armed to the teeth" who does things like this.

I live in a place that could aptly be called Hicksville, USA. Everyone has a gun somewhere. Ours is unloaded, in the the garage.

Our murder rate, or people shot by others whether they die or not, is nothing.

But as it was pointed out, people in Switzerland have guns and they don't do this, so why us? I have no idea. I really don't. I do know a gun ban wouldn't work anymore than our "War on Drugs", but I certainly hope that laws are tightened up and quickly. And I know my heart is breaking for my country.

CheerfulYank · 18/12/2012 05:17

And I think the "pro-gun asshole" comment made to someone who was merely expressing an opinion was utterly rude and childish.

Animation · 18/12/2012 08:14

Yes Switzerland seem too good to be true. Smile I'd be worried if guns were available in Britain - can't imagine it would be like in Switzerland.

GrimmaTheNome · 18/12/2012 08:33

Gun ownership in Switzerland arises from their lack of a standing army - adult males do compulsory military service and form a true militia - see here. Guns retained for personal use after military service are converted from being fully automatic. It looks like its well-regulated.
