Why are:

  1. Certain items of clothing = "mumsy" eg bootcuts, tunics, some boots but not others (forget which)
  1. Short wide jumpers are inherently better than others
  1. Anyone over a size 12 = fat
  1. Fat = mumsy
  1. That thinking the above makes you a cleverer and more knowing alnd all-round better person with a slight pitying disdain for those that don't agree.

Lastly I would like a definition of "Mumsy" and why it is an insult.

Thank you.

Yeah, but Tethers, you're uncommonly gifted! Those with vision have to suffer ignorance, like Cassandra. At least you can suffer stylishly.

KrisMoose · 06/12/2012 13:49

ZACKLY Sue. Judging and bitching is fun and harmless, if done in the appropriate place.

LRDtheFeministDude · 06/12/2012 13:50

Ways and ways of doing it though, right?

I mean there's having a good bitch which feels cathartic and hopefully doesn't upset anyone, and there's being frankly quite nasty.

It's like if I read Grazia, and it's all 'OMG, Katie Price's DISGUSTING CELLULITE revealed', it feels a bit shit. OTOH when someone upthread said she looked like a sausage in a fair isle sweater dress it was funny and let her get her point across about what she thinks to sweater dresses too.

SuePurblyFeltYourPresents · 06/12/2012 13:50

safe spaces for bitching Xmas Grin

SuePurblyFeltYourPresents · 06/12/2012 13:51

I do though. You would larf too, if it happened to you Xmas Grin
Actually I looked like a link of sossidges, on account of having sucky-inny pants on.

TuftyFinch · 06/12/2012 13:55

Well, this has all moved on a pace.
Anyway I only care about whether you've looked under the stairs yet tethers Grin

tethersjinglebellend · 06/12/2012 13:56

Thanks, garlic. That helps a bit.

KrisMoose · 06/12/2012 13:57

yes

Absy · 06/12/2012 14:00

Ah, now I understand.

Can we still do point and laugh at Peruna and Speziale threads though? It's practically a public service.

TuftyFinch · 06/12/2012 14:01

I Agee with garlic too.
I need some kindling. And an orange coat. And a green jumper with overly long arms and overly long polo neck but not one of those baggy necked affairs.

KrisMoose · 06/12/2012 14:02

We shall, Absy. And awful wedding dresses. We have to.

I don't understand the Feminism link - can someone explain in more simplistic terms? Ta

ThinkAboutItOnBoxingDay · 06/12/2012 14:02

This thread is depressing me. I've been living in breast feeding tops / tops that you can bfeed in for 6 months. Before that I was pregnant. Haven't bought any new clothes for a year.

Oh to be able to wear a dress.

Sorry, bit of a poor me and totally off thread.

January sales here I come.

LRDtheFeministDude · 06/12/2012 14:02

I do love India Knight's description of sucky-inny pants making the unwanted fat 'reveal itself elsewhere in pert little bulges of back fat'. Niiiice.

But yes. I am also no doubt sausage-like. I enjoy sausages.

KrisMoose · 06/12/2012 14:06

TAIOBD, I went from BFing to PG three times in a row - I know how you feel :( It will feel sooooooo good to get back to 'you' again.

ThinkAboutItOnBoxingDay · 06/12/2012 14:06

Sorry, meant to say, my current clothing doldrums are REAL crap 'mum' atire. Makes 'mumsie' look stylish.

Mumsie in this context defined as 'white stuff' meets per una....

showmethetoys · 06/12/2012 14:18

Gosh, who would have thought tunics could become so controversial!

I really cant get my knickers in a twist about what is said on S&B. Surely the whole point of that board is to give opinions - if someone said, 'help me find a dress for a wedding' and everyone just answered 'oh you just wear what you feel comfortable in even if it looks really ugly' , then there would be no need for a Style and Beauty section of mumsnet at all.

I love S&B and have spent shitloads of money on stuff since I started looking on there got some great ideas for clothes and makeup from there. However, I wouldnt be seen dead in a lot of the stuff people seem to covet on there (fly boots, boring phase eight dresses etc) and if I see another link to a blog which shows a 40 something woman showing off a million variations of skinny jeans, blazer and scarf I may scream.

But similarly I love wearing a lot of stuff that is 'wrong' in the eyes of S&B- eg. denim mini skirts, classic short ugg boots Shock , shorts over tights (especially as my legs are not really long and skinny!), coloured eye shadow even though I am 30.

All of these things are classed as 'not for anyone over the age of 15', but I dont think I would get all offended about it and start a thread in AIBU to question why these things are disliked.

I would never think to myself that they were being bitchy about it - it is just opinion after all. And anyone has the right to the opinion that tunics are grim, that ugg boots look rank or that bootcut jeans, ankle boots and a fleece are not a good look.

tethersjinglebellend · 06/12/2012 14:22

I have been warning against tunics since 2010.

It's all so unfair.

tethersjinglebellend · 06/12/2012 14:24

Oh, and my clothes would go (and have gone) down like a lead balloon on S&B.

I'm not sure what my point is.

SuePurblyFeltYourPresents · 06/12/2012 14:24

Is it your posting style, tethers? Too well-typed?

tethersjinglebellend · 06/12/2012 14:33

Bingo.

wordfactory · 06/12/2012 14:33

Lord preserve me from the skinny jeans and cords look!

Every mother I know aged between 40-50 wears them. Plus parker. Plus slouchy cashmere jumper. It is the uniform of school run mum!

Worse still, it looks flattering on less than half of them.

Go to any country where women are naturally more curvaceous and they have not succumbed.

SuePurblyFeltYourPresents · 06/12/2012 14:36

If I wore skinny cords I'd look like a potato balanced on two parsnips.
Added to the sossidge. I sense a theme.

KrisMoose · 06/12/2012 14:37

Sounds like a nice roast dinner, Sue. Ahem.

HullyEastergully · 06/12/2012 14:41

But that's why tunics are my friend, they hide all my sausageness and don't look tent-like

EverlongLovesHerChristmasRobin · 06/12/2012 14:43

Tunics suit the small of hip imo.
