Why are:

  1. Certain items of clothing = "mumsy" eg bootcuts, tunics, some boots but not others (forget which)
  1. Short wide jumpers are inherently better than others
  1. Anyone over a size 12 = fat
  1. Fat = mumsy
  1. That thinking the above makes you a cleverer and more knowing alnd all-round better person with a slight pitying disdain for those that don't agree.

Lastly I would like a definition of "Mumsy" and why it is an insult.

Thank you.

the funny thing is that by having such a good time playing with assigning emotional values to clothes, you are all proving my point. My work here is done

Well. Someone put on the snitty two-piece this morning.
And accessorised it with the Shawl of Points Missed. For seamless day-to-night glamour obvs.

LRDtheFeministDude · 07/12/2012 10:07

There was a point? What was it?

SuePurblyFeltYourPresents · 07/12/2012 10:09

You proved it LRD. Prolly with your inappropriate humour and pleather onesie.

HullyEastergully · 07/12/2012 10:12

the Shawl of Points Missed

so good

I don't know whether to be thrilled I have humour or sad you don't believe I could rise above fake leather. Sad

Absy · 07/12/2012 10:15

Where's the link to LRD's thread?

WHERE?

LRDtheFeministDude · 07/12/2012 10:18

I'm charmed you'd ask. Though it did rapidly descend from tasteful discussions of fashion, I'm afraid.

SuePurblyFeltYourPresents · 07/12/2012 10:19

Can anyone really pull off pleather though?
I think not.

LRDtheFeministDude · 07/12/2012 10:26

It's the smell, isn't it? Mind you I'm not sure a leather onesie would smell any nicer, TBH.

MrsCampbellBlack · 07/12/2012 11:45

Pleather is fab and the perfect 'mum' outfit as wipes clean - what's not to love?

LRDtheFeministDude · 07/12/2012 11:51

Thank god I'm not a mum. Wink

I shall continue with suede. Much nicer.

SuePurblyFeltYourPresents · 07/12/2012 12:06

Seeing every 'larger' lady shoehorned into pleather leggings'n'sparkly tunic on the XF every week has put me off. I couldn't.
Also I have hygiene based concerns.

LRDtheFeministDude · 07/12/2012 12:11

Ewww. I didn't know such things existed. Why?!

fromparistoberlin · 07/12/2012 12:18

I am sure this thread has moved on

HOWEVER

bootcut jeans (for example) are Mumsy, they just are: given that middle aged Mums tend to be the predominant wearing-audience

I dont see children wearing them. I dont see Men wearing them (even cross dressers seem to go for a more slutti look shall we say)
And I dont see 20 somethings (much) of any gender wearing them , given their love for jeans, abercrombie et al
and old ladies tend to prefer slacks and nice sensible scholls

SO, the aformentioned items are predominantly worn by middles aged Mums

whats got your grill hully gully?

is this you,

and if it is, FAIR ENOUGH
we cant all wear head to toe Prada innit, would be a dull world

AlphaBeta82 · 07/12/2012 12:22

Oh Djembe - I am most definately mumsy!!
but I like being mumsy - i am a mum, i like me and I love being mumsy it is part of my identity and who I am!

Startail · 07/12/2012 12:33

Mumsy = comfortable if you aren't skinny + practical for running after DCs .

Ie. being Mumsy is perfectly reasonable.

Not sure if sketchers, black cord jegings and an animal Hoddie is Mumsy, but it's warm comfortable and suitable for today's job listGrin

Head to toe Prada.

Okaaaay ....

garlicbaubles · 07/12/2012 13:18

In the interests of balance, this uni-designer Prada kit is nice.

Way late to this thread but as a 'mutton' type of girl, the snipey disdain works both ways! Mumsy dressers are snotty about us tarty types, too Grin

bootcut jeans and those black ankle boots are just 'I have given up on fashion' clothes, thats all. If you arent into fashion and want to dress for comfort and practicality, they are fine. But they wont win any glam awards, will they? Npt everyne wants to be glam though, I appreciate.

As a certified tart, though, you will never find me in bootcuts, mum boots, waterfall cardis or Boden. My sixty five yr old mum wears that style. It looks good on HER. Thats all.

SunsetMojito · 07/12/2012 13:26

A jacket can be witty. In fact I'm wearing one right now. OK its a playful tongue-in-cheek fashion term, like most fashion terms are, but christ no need for playground nastiness because you think you are above such frivolity!

StockingFilly · 07/12/2012 13:27

Re: dress sizes. I am a 12. Love being a 12, dont mind bumping up to a 14. Wouldnt want to be bigger, as it limits what you can wear (so few clothes shops go over a 14 for dceent clothng) but I dont think 14, 16 or even 18 is necessarily 'fat'....and who ares anyway? Women of all shapes and sizes can look great. I would never want to be skinnier than a 12. I love being voluptuous. I feel absolutely no pressure to look like a model. It REALLY is a cultural thing, too. My husband is from the Caribbean and it has totally changed how I feel about my shape and size. Its not desirable to be thin in the Caribbean. The healthy, well fed look is desirable.

My two pennies worth, anyway...
