Erm yes yabu.

Why? What's brought this little rant on?

LauriesFairyonthetreeeatsCake · 03/12/2012 11:56

yabu but it's your life/your thoughts

I only eat meat occasionally as it's expensive but when I do I will only eat free range - the quality of life of the animal is extremely important to me.

AfterEightMintyy · 03/12/2012 11:56

Yabu, very much so.

missymoomoomee · 03/12/2012 11:57

Assuming thats all you have to say on the matter then YABVVVVU.

Paiviaso · 03/12/2012 11:58

YABVU.

honeytea · 03/12/2012 12:00

Don't tell my little sister that! ;)

HECTheHallsWithRowsAndFolly · 03/12/2012 12:00

A miserable pain filled existence before ending up on your plate v a comfortable existence in a more natural habitat before ending up on your plate.

I know a lot of people think that because you end up eating the animal, it doesn't matter how it lived, but I disagree.

I eat meat, but I don't like to think of an animal having an awful existence up to being killed. I prefer to think that it had sunshine and open air, erm, up to it being killed. Blush

It matters to me.

I suppose some would say if it matters that much, don't eat meat. And I don't have an answer to that.

TheseGoToEleven · 03/12/2012 12:00

YABVVVU. Sadly there are far too many people with that attitude in this world, not just regarding turkeys but regarding all other species including other members of the human species.

twofingerstoGideon · 03/12/2012 12:02

^^ What TheseGoToEleven said.

OP you are utterly unreasonable.

Pandemoniaa · 03/12/2012 12:06

YABU.

And if you are going to demonstrate such casual disregard for the pre-cooked welfare of it, you could at least give your turkey the benefit of an apostrophe.

tabulahrasa · 03/12/2012 12:07

Even if you are not at all about it's quality of life in a compassionate way, animals that are kept well produce better tasting meat, so YABU

SantaWearsGreen · 03/12/2012 12:09

Yabvu.

I wish people wouldn't eat meat full stop but if they do I wish they would all eat free range only. The animal deserves a happy and fulfilling life where it is treat in a manner the same as you would treat a dog or human even if it will eventually be slaughtered. I think people like to distance themselves from the fact that the meat on your plate was once a living creature with a heartbeat and emotions and everything. People like to just think it is food, like the carrots and potatoes.

If animals have to be murdered I'd like to at least think they lived a happy life.

squeakytoy · 03/12/2012 12:09

YABU.

I am not vegetarian but still believe that all animals should be treated humanely and not cruelly throughout their life.

Fairylea · 03/12/2012 12:10

Yabu. Very.

AnyFuckerForAMincePie · 03/12/2012 12:10

wind up merchant

missymoomoomee · 03/12/2012 12:11

Sorry but I did Xmas Grin at you could at least give your turkey the benefit of an apostrophe

NameGotLostInCyberspace · 03/12/2012 12:13

So if the turkey was scratching around for food in the dark all day dragging round his urine burned knees in shit all day, you wouldn't mind?
Fair dos.

SantasBlotto · 03/12/2012 12:14

.....and yet the turkey speaks so highly of you....

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 03/12/2012 12:15

Meh. No one can make you care about turkeys, or pigs, or cattle, or anything else you might fancy eating. But I'm always a little wary of people who genuinely don't care about the basic welfare of animals. In my experience, it tends to extend to people, too. A lack of empathy, if you will.

FayeKorgasm · 03/12/2012 12:18

A lack of empathy for another's plight, be it human or animal, is unusual at best.

I'm not sure why you would want to advertise this trait.

yanbu, not that unusual either

Saski · 03/12/2012 12:19

It's not as though the extra cost goes towards turkey aromatherapy or massage.
It's about allowing them to move.

NotaDisneyMum · 03/12/2012 12:23

I could understand that pov, if it was only the quality of life that was the issue - but the quality of life has such a significant impact on the quality of meat - taste, texture, density, cooking etc - that the issue is far more complicated that that.

If you don't care how your meat looks and tastes either, then I suppose YANBU - I'm not naive enough to think that intensive farming is ever going to be eradicated.

But, if you don't care what your meat tastes like, then why bother with meat at all? YABU to buy meat at all if it's not something you enjoy.
