YABU OP, you big shit-stirring psycopath, you!

I always have a good sideways Hmm look at people buying battery eggs too.

BTW, for those better informed than me: is a co-op "high welfare" frozen turky ok? The label says "space to thrive", so i am guessing it's barn reared. What do you think?

takataka · 03/12/2012 13:46

i really try not to care about these things, because i am skint. Battery/Barn eggs are generally cheaper. But I cant do it. I have on occasion bought non-free-range eggs, but I cant stomach it. As soon as I crack them open I get turned right off and cant eat them Blush

Mu1berries · 03/12/2012 13:46

space to thrive! sure me and me kids are in a flat that is 45 sq metres. I'd love space to thrive meself. I don't eat a lot of meat though. ONly at other people's houses when it's served to me.

Pandemoniaa · 03/12/2012 13:47

Should be ethically just fine Santa. I'd say it's been given room to explore its own horizons and perhaps, dwell a little on the philosophy of life. A contentedly reared turkey is going to taste a great deal better too.

takataka · 03/12/2012 13:47

as a result...i buy less meat

Mu1berries · 03/12/2012 13:48

yes takataka, that's it. I honestly daren't open my mind to the notion of it all because I still haven't paid my solicitor, or the school's voluntary contribution, i feel a lot of anxiety about money as it IS. so I guess it is a form of denial. I don't honestly thinnk that i'll be punished by karma because I'm not as ethical as say, Bono's wife.

takataka · 03/12/2012 13:48

I wont make people feel guilty for buying/eating non-free range/organic. Not everyone can afford it

missymoomoomee · 03/12/2012 13:49

Santas make of this what you will

CremeEggThief · 03/12/2012 13:49

YABU. And you know it!

takataka · 03/12/2012 13:49

exactly berries

SoWhatIfImWorkingClass · 03/12/2012 13:56

YABU.

diddl · 03/12/2012 13:56

I was told on the other thread that if you can´t afford it you should eat less chicken/eggs & only when you can afford free range.

I see that point-I guess I don´t always care enough.

2012 & eggs are a "luxury" item-fucking ridiculous.

SantasComingEarlyHisSackIsFull · 03/12/2012 13:57

Thanks Missy, still undecided. I don't know whether I am being tight and should shell out for free range after a good YABU style "spanking" so to speak, or whether it is really ok...

SantasComingEarlyHisSackIsFull · 03/12/2012 13:59

You sound nice Takataka. I hope your finances improve soon.

takataka · 03/12/2012 14:00

yes diddl i choose not to eat so much meat as a result of not being able to afford freerange/organic, but would not slate anyone for buying meat that isnt free range...the problem isnt really the consumer. Its the bloody economy again isnt it and this topsy turvey society. There should be stricter welfare standards/ more affordable food...but then the farmers are often barely cutting even too Confused

Hear hear about eggs being a luxury item Sad

EverlongLovesHerChristmasRobin · 03/12/2012 14:01

I understand that some people can't afford a free range organic turkey. Of course some people are worrying about whether they have enough money to feed their dc anything.

But it's the " I don't give a shit attitude ' I find gross.

I mean why start this thread?

takataka · 03/12/2012 14:03

And its Xmas...so if skint people can only afford a battery turkey then it is not for those that can afford organic/free range to judge them surely

our turkey is coming from local farm and is costing £70!! Shock ShockShock Sharing cost of this, and have saved for it

takataka · 03/12/2012 14:04

is often defensive eh everlong? attack is the best form of defense an all that...

takataka · 03/12/2012 14:06

thank you santas Grin I do too....i have a cunning plan. But it is long term, so just need to make sure i dont die, before I get financially out of shit... Grin

catgirl1976geesealaying · 03/12/2012 14:08

Totally agree - you buy what you can afford and that's different for everyone. And if you can't afford free range (and I didn't used to be able to) you try not to dwell on it

But actively not giving a shit is pretty Hmm

diddl · 03/12/2012 14:09

I also think the profits that the supermarkets take.

And intensive farming which has made people used to available affordable stuff.

And now that people are aware & wanting to make a choice-that price difference can be a shock.

I usually buy free range.

Can´t get eggs from battery hens here.

But I´m sure on occasion I have lost my train of thought & picked up a better price & not checked.

I try not to-but it´s not always uppermost in my mind all of the time iyswim.

We had chicken on Saturday-husband picked it up & I didn´t think to check.

It was 1.5kg & cost nearly 10? so I´m hoping it had a good life!

But I haven´t shopped for one for a while-so maybe that´s not free range price?

carovioletfizz · 03/12/2012 14:10

Sadly, free range is often a misleading term - watch this video from 2010 about the Happy Egg Company.
news.sky.com/story/811516/sky-news-exposes-egg-firms-hen-mistreatment

Though hopefully they have improved the way they keep their hens, often free range animals don't have it that much better than ones that are factory farmed.

Organic is also misleading - animals on organic farms often have worse lives as if they develop an infection they won't be treated to avoid getting antibiotics in their system and rendering their meat or dairy non organic.
BTW OP YABU - incredibly so, am glad that most people agree!

EverlongLovesHerChristmasRobin · 03/12/2012 14:16

Pardon tarkakata?

takataka · 03/12/2012 14:22

everlong i meant maybe that is what the 'i dont give a shit' attitude is all about...maybe its defensive

EverlongLovesHerChristmasRobin · 03/12/2012 14:24

Could be. Some folk are unfathomable.
