YABU as I'm sure you know.
You don't need a turkey. You might really want a turkey or like to stick to tradition, but your desire to be traditional or eat turkey is not more important that the turkey's right to not suffer. If you really can't afford a free range turkey then eat something else. It is, at the very least, worth you at least giving a stuff.

QuacksForDoughnuts · 03/12/2012 14:42

Adding to the chorus of YABUs. I may have missed something in the original OP (if you get my drift) but tbh the thread title is enough!

naturalbaby · 03/12/2012 14:46

Yabu and funding animal cruelty.
You don't have to have turkey on a specific day of the year just because everybody else is.

MrsTerryPratchett · 03/12/2012 14:54

Turkey is rank, battery turkey is rank and leaves a bad taste in my mouth of a different kind. Christmas comes but once a year, can't you buy a happy turkey or happy goose like me, yum yum?

Incidentally, have you tried an empathy test? Chickens have empathy BTW. Do you?

takataka · 03/12/2012 15:19

I feel compelled to argue in defense of OP which is slightly ridiculous seeing as OP hasn't returned, and I was began for 10 years!

Apparently 80% of chocolate has slaves involved in production process. Will you stop eating chocolate?

takataka · 03/12/2012 15:19

Vegan, not began!

Latonia · 03/12/2012 17:09

Definitely YABU. I could not and would not buy or eat non-free range eggs or meats. I am not rich by any stretch of the imagination and live on my oap and a miniscule occupational pension. But I have cut down on meat so I can afford free range.

If you don't give a damn about the life of the animal (which is horrendous), think about what you are eating. Non-free range are pumped full of hormones etc.

As others have said, you don't HAVE to eat a turkey on Christmas day.

MrsTerryPratchett · 03/12/2012 19:06

I eat Fair Trade chocolate or none for that reason, takataka. Most people don't though. It helps that I don't actually crave chocolate that much.

takataka · 03/12/2012 19:10

I crave chocolate a lot Grin

And does everyone practice ethical banking? Careful not to buy products which contain palm oil? Picky about the type of olive oil you use?

MrsTerryPratchett · 03/12/2012 19:32

I will admit to drinking San Pellegrino. It is the one Nestle product I buy, very rarely. I do bank ethically.

takataka · 03/12/2012 19:36

I do too. I'm not interogating you....just trying to make a point, that a lot of our consumerism causes suffering. To people, as well as animals.

MrsTerryPratchett · 03/12/2012 19:38

I bang on about the chocolate slavery a lot. I think that if more people knew about it, it would change the market I hope.

pigletmania · 03/12/2012 19:39

Yabvvu I do feel sorry for the poor od Turkey but I like meat too much, after all we are omnivores

Babymamaroon · 03/12/2012 20:31

Yabu and IMO are deeply lacking something in your genetic makeup. Anyone who can not care about any kind of suffering be it human or animal is not a well rounded individual. Do you think abuse is ok? Have you been abused? That would help explain your abhorrent attitude.

whathasthecatdonenow · 03/12/2012 20:38

As I said on the other thread that this has spun off from, I wouldn't associate with those who didn't have any concern for animal welfare. I don't suppose the OP will be heartbroken about that. I'm a pretty shit human, but I do care about animals.

MoreBeta · 03/12/2012 20:39

socharlotte - I once spent a month cleaning turkey sheds after the birds had gone for slaughter.

The air was so toxic we wore full body suits with an external air supply.

That air is what your turkey may have been living in before it hits your plate. Some of that is on your plate.

That is why I care where my turkey comes from.

bebumba · 03/12/2012 20:42

An interesting view www.davidpbrown.co.uk/poetry/benjamin-zephaniah-2.html

MrsTerryPratchett · 03/12/2012 20:44

Benjamin Zephaniah was also the man who turned down an OBE. Nice to turkeys and knows his history.

takataka · 03/12/2012 20:52

Oooo! I heart Benjamin Zephaniah

socharlotte · 03/12/2012 23:13

hang on don't put words into my mouth. Not being concerned about turkey welfare is not the same thing as not caring about any kind of suffering and thinking abuse is ok

OP posts:
jellybeans · 03/12/2012 23:22

YABU. I am not veggie although I often think I should consider it. I care about animals. Not doing so is pretty mean.

pigletmania · 03/12/2012 23:24

We don't really like turkey, so beef it is

tittytittyhanghang · 03/12/2012 23:44
