The Mayan calendar date for the end of the long cycle (which has happened before, hence why it is a cycle) has never been about the end of the world and it has calculation that deal with the year not being exactly 365 days just not the way the Gregorian calendar has it (most calendar systems do, they just all deal with it differently - some have leap months instead or have a week outside of the months at the end that gets longer or shorter).

It's just the end of the long cycle which means Mayans and areas with a large Mayan communities are going to have a giant kickass party. Massive. It's not that they think the date is bollocks - it's important - it's that it was co-opted by White academics looking for the exotic and ignoring the actual people involved.

And Mayans with Guatamala are currently suing their government over this bullshit because they keep advertising the doomsday in hopes of getting rich tourists to flood Mayan holy sites during their festival.

I'm currently banning myself from watching documentary channels because of all the shows and adverts of shows filled with White academics telling us all about Mayan society and life while using Aztec artifacts (seriously, the Mayan calendar on most of those shows and online gifs, with the square head in the middle, is an Aztec sun stone. The traditional Mayan calendar is round but has an obviously completely different style of art and has a full person in the centre in a sacred pose) and talking about them like they are all dead.

Who will be Christmas Number One at the end of the world? What would be the most appropriate tune?

cheekybaubles · 02/12/2012 15:37

There are going to be a lot of pissed off dead people and no-one to haunt....except for cockroaches maybe?

Bunbaker · 02/12/2012 15:39

Are people really worried about the end of the world?
Seriously?

I used to work in London in the late 1970s and I often used to see a chap walking up and down Oxford Street with a "the end of the world is nigh" sandwich board on him. Lunacy, sheer lunacy. And we are still here.

StrawberriesTasteLikeLipsDo · 02/12/2012 15:46

I wont be best pleased if it does, I'm
Having my DS2 that day dont fancy and apocolypse in a hospital when i wont be able to walk...

I've lived through too many end of the world scares to be bothered about this one (Y2K, various planetary alignments that were supposed to knock the Earth's axis off kilter, Nostradamus, the supposed coming of the Rapture, blah, blah, blah) but I found this on NASA's website the other day, it pretty much demolishes all the current "end of the world is nigh" stuff in one hit:

BattlingFanjos · 02/12/2012 16:59

I will be having an Armageddon party (any excuse eh?) All the kids break up that day and it'll probably be the last day we can all get together before christmas. I know a few people who are irrationally worrying about it, I don't think they're silly/daft, just worrying. So we're making light of it and if by some mad chance it is the end of the world (as we know it/zombies etc) we'll be going out with a bang Grin.

OP just focus on the good positive things you're looking forward to this christmas and next year, you'll soon change your mind!
