about the ending of the world as predicted by the Mayan's on the 21st December.
Having palpitations and am thinking of asking for a days annual leave to spend the day at home with my family....

OP posts:
FurryDogMother · 02/12/2012 11:49

Is there any time when it's the 21st December all over the world? Or do you think the Russians' world will end first, and then Armageddon will follow the time zones around the planet? It would be very annoying if my world ended on the 20th or the 22nd when I was expecting it on the 21st...

MissCellania · 02/12/2012 11:50

Does anyone actually believe in this stupid media hype? It's like thinking the world is going to end every year on dec 31st because your calender runs out!
Get a grip.

FreakySnuckerCupidStunt · 02/12/2012 11:57

Yes you are definitely being unreasonable.

The Mayans didn't account for leap years, so, actually, the world should have ended months ago.

Solo · 02/12/2012 12:09

For all of us you that are stocking up on tinned goods...don't forget a tin opener!!!

loopylou6 · 02/12/2012 12:27

I'm the biggest 'woo' person ever, and I don't think anything will happen, and if it does, then it will be painless, and we'll all go together.

It'd probably happen that quick that we wouldn't even be aware of it :)

however I'd be a liar to say I won't be on pins listening for strange noises on the 21st

Fakebook · 02/12/2012 12:38

Nothing is going to happen! It's just the Mayans end of an age or something. The end of the world is predicted every year and nothing happens. When the world will end, there will be no warning!

Sallyingforth · 02/12/2012 13:16

I remember when everyone made a huge fuss about 2000 when apparently all the computers were going to explode/turn into giant robots. There was even a squad of techies at work going about putting stickers on machines saying they were "y2k safe".
So what happened when Big Ben finished bonging in the new year? A big fat nothing.
Why do you think the 'techies' were there?
The Y2k bug certainly existed in some PCs.
The reason nothing happened to your computers was precisely because the techies went around checking for Y2k bugs and fixing any potential problems before the end of the year.

Sallyingforth · 02/12/2012 13:20

OP, if you want something to worry about, think about Iran preparing nuclear weapons, and Israel expected to launch a preemptive attack on them. With other countries around the Middle East and further afield standing ready to join in.

Happy New Year !!!

SneezySnatcher · 02/12/2012 13:29

I'm a real worrier. Ever since I can remember I've worried about stuff like this. When I was at uni it was Nostradamus's prediction. I worried about Y2K. I worried the Hadron collider would cause a black hole. There was at least one other prediction of the end of the world this year. Rationally I know it's stupid, but I really can't help it.

This time, however, I'm not worrying (much). Thinking about it, how can anyone predict the end of the world? I don't believe in psychics/fortune tellers and so why on earth should I believe anyone can see into the future? If there hasn't been a film about this very few people would be aware of it.

I've decided to get past 21st and never, ever believe any of this crap again. I'm done with the worrying.

sherzy · 02/12/2012 13:30

If it's going to happen could it be courteous and occur outside of work hours. I love my job but I don't wish my final moments to be spent with wild teenagers over excited for end of term and Christmas.

FromEsme · 02/12/2012 13:32

Even if the world does end (which is won't) it'll just involve dying which you are most certainly going to do anyway.

If it does end (which is won't) I will be very pissed off that I have slogged away for an entire term of my PGCE for NOTHING.

BalthierBunansa · 02/12/2012 13:33

Well if it does happen (which it's not going to) everyone will be dead anyway, so it's not like you will be missing much. Grin

SirBoobAlot · 02/12/2012 13:33

I remember spending nights sobbing in fear after a science teacher heard I had anxiety and told me not to worry about my grades, as the world was going to end that week anyway.

And yes once again I am worrying about the world ending this year Blush

Nice to know the Mayans think its bollocks at least Grin

BalthierBunansa · 02/12/2012 13:35

I will be pissed if it does happen, I have examinations in January. All that revising for nothing? Not on.

thebody · 02/12/2012 13:36

Bollocks, our world neatly ended for us in feb when we thought dd had been killed. Thank god she survived.

Op just enjoy the now and let the future take care if itself.

sherzy · 02/12/2012 13:44

Bloody hell thebody :( pleased you had a happy ending.

Why is the Mayan calander so significant when we have so many different cultures?

NotWankinginaWinterWonderland · 02/12/2012 13:45

oh no not you too, my son is terrified.... I am buying nothing for Christmas if we are all dying, in fact I may put me tree up early, whats with the 12 day rule if i am going to die anyway

SlightlySuperiorPeasant · 02/12/2012 13:54

Hmm Really? People actually worry and fret about this kind of thing?

Better eat all my Advent calendar chocolates now then :o

PimpMyHippo · 02/12/2012 13:58

I'm another one who would really like it to be true - but it's not. You have nothing to worry about, and I will wake up in the morning on the 22nd feeling disappointed.

amillionyears · 02/12/2012 14:41

Do you want to talk more PimpMyHippo?

AlienRefluxLooksLikeSnow · 02/12/2012 14:46

Yeah pimpmyhippo what's up?

PimpMyHippo · 02/12/2012 14:54

It would just be an ideal solution to the old dilemma of "I can't cope with life but other people will be unhappy if I pack it in"... which I tend to think is a common dilemma but possibly not. Xmas Blush

amillionyears · 02/12/2012 15:08
Sad Do you want to start a thread? perhaps a mumsnetter can help you out with something?
Punkatheart · 02/12/2012 15:17

Pimp, my darling girl...I can honestly say that I completely understand. Life is so bloody hard sometimes, isn't it? Come on, you have a gorgeous username that sounds full of fun and ingenuity....stay here and talk to the wonderful women on here. What's up?

HildaOgden · 02/12/2012 15:25

I remember being pregnant...and terrified ....at the turn of the new millineum. They had much so much talk about how computers etc wouldn't cope with the change at midnight,I was convinced that all airplanes would crash, nuclear missiles would launch etc.Plenty of people the world over hoarder tinned food so they could survive......seriously,it was a big deal.

I stayed awake for 2 days beforehand,so that I would be so exhausted I would sleep through the end of the world at midnight (it made perfect sense to me at the time!)

Anyway, off I went to bed, conked out and nearly died of shock at being awoken by 'explosions' at midnight....I honestly have never been so terrified.

Turned out it was fecking fireworks from a New Years Eve party down the road.

The moral of the story?I can understand you being scared,op.And I don't think you're mad.But I do believe that everything will be ok,and on the 22nd you will realise this.By all means, book the day off to be with your family if it makes the build up to that date easier....but be assured, there have been many other times when people thought the world would end.And it didn't.
