to think "not liking needles" is not a good reason for a pregnant woman to turn down whooping cough vaccine?

There may be other reasons I'm not aware of to turn it down but for the lady I met at baby and bumps group today to be turning it down for this reason seems foolish and selfish.

I've seen a small child with whooping cough abroad. Its very distressing and I'd do anything reasonable to protect children from it.

So AIBU to think that turning it down just because you don't like needles or injections is wrong? I'm so glad DS (18 weeks) has now had the full course of early vaccines which included whooping cough

So she is saying that those who don't vaccinate don't love their kids as much.
or is she not.

Pagwatch · 01/12/2012 18:50

Are you really going this time?

Pagwatch · 01/12/2012 18:52

I am Confused and Hmm and Wine all at the same time. Which is a lot for an emoticon policeman.

bradywasmyfavouriteking · 01/12/2012 18:53

Isn't the idea that it is a 'shitty' reason exactly the same as not loving your baby enough.
No pagwatch because she has assured us several times that she would say it straight if thats what she meant.

I don't even thin ghost has read the thread.

Because I can't find anyone on the thread who has chosen not to vaccinate because they have a phobia. which this statement refers to. because I've much better things to do than talk to fools who can't overcome their fears for their children.

Pagwatch · 01/12/2012 18:56

It's all just a tad contradictory. Even I can see that and I am a fool.

bradywasmyfavouriteking · 01/12/2012 18:56

I am off to put ds to bed so I can have a Wine and watch avengers Grin because I love thor Xmas Wink.

hopefully i will have had enough Wine by the end of the night i will look like Xmas Confused

Can't wait to go tell dh that his anti vac friends clearly don't love their kids. he will look like this Xmas Shock and then Xmas Angry then Xmas Biscuit the Xmas Grin.

Is that enough emoticons?

BOFingSanta · 01/12/2012 19:02

I think I'll have some of that Wine while I muster an opinion on what medical interventions a complete stranger decides they don't fancy.

I lost a friend this year because he found it easier to hang himself in the woods behind his house than deal with his phobias of hospitals, needles and operations.
It's very easy to judge people, a lot harder to support them to make the right choices.

^^
For all you smug types thinking people should be able to get over phobias, this post is worth repeating.

insancerre I'm sorry you lost your friend.

Procrastinating · 01/12/2012 19:05

I think women who don't face their needle phobia during pregnancy just can't imagine the possible consequences of not having a test or vaccine. Or can't imagine it might happen to their child. I knew someone like this, she was scared of needles so had no tests, convinced it would "all be fine".

Having an informed opinion for not having a vaccination or test is completely different.

Have my first emoticon Flowers ghost!

Bosgrove · 01/12/2012 19:07

One of my friends children has whooping cough, if she had been offered the jab, she would have chewed her arm off to save her baby going through what he is going through.

And before anyone says that I don't understand, my Dad faints everytime he has to have an injection, my sister is no better. I was almost as bad, but twice weekly blood tests have now made me able to cope now, but I still don't like needles.

bradywasmyfavouriteking · 01/12/2012 19:12

Procrastinating Was it ok or not?

Most people with phobias do also research. Which is why I went through the blood tests. Some people may have a phobia, research the WC vaccine and decide the risks are to high. Some people don't feel its safe.

So why would you put yourself through having a vaccine you are not convinced about.

Pagwatch · 01/12/2012 19:12

Here you go BOF Wine

HalloweenNameChange · 01/12/2012 19:14

Really I think it's her body and she doesn't want it. So oh well, she may have also turned down blood work. Or maybe she is anti vac in preganncy and didn't want to debate it with nosy people at play group?

Angelico · 01/12/2012 19:15

YANBU if she simply 'dislikes' needles - in my view that is stupid and selfish - I know one family personally who almost lost their DD over the summer because she got whooping cough before she could have her jabs. I got my DD in pronto for hers and was furious that I missed out on the pregnancy jab by a couple of weeks when they've known whooping cough is a problem for months.

She may have an actual phobia of needles - clearly the MN jury has decided that she has - rather generous on the basis of 'I don't like needles'. (I've uttered that immortal line myself but am not phobic, simply dislike being stabbed in the arm.) On the other hand she may not be phobic and may indeed be selfish and foolish.

bradywasmyfavouriteking · 01/12/2012 19:21

no one has 'decided' anything.

The conversation has gone that there could have been other reasons including being anti vac that she didn't want to discuss with judgy randoms.

The the debate progressed onto whether a phobia is a good enough reason to not have it. Then bizarrely about people not loving their kids enough.

No one said she definitely has a phobia but it could be one of the many reasons that the OP is BU.

Procrastinating · 01/12/2012 19:21

All 4 of my friend's babies were fine brady. She had no blood tests at all, despite two of the babies showing as possible gestational diabetes (too big for dates on scans).

I researched thoroughly too, I couldn't justify avoiding any needles on the basis of what I found out.

Pagwatch · 01/12/2012 19:22

I am not sure everyone decided she had a phobia.
I am inthe camp where it's no ones business so she said the minimum to change the subject.

Procrastinating · 01/12/2012 19:27

I might be wierd but if I believe in something I want people to know about it rather than hiding it behind a vague comment.
That may be teenage behaviour and not very mature though. I have noticed people looking at me in an odd way actually.

bradywasmyfavouriteking · 01/12/2012 19:27

Thats where i am pagwatch

Procrastinating but some people are compelled by the anti vac research. I am pro vac. I feel like you.

But I also accept that some people feel they are doing the best for their child by not vaccinating. And their opinion is as valid as mine.

bradywasmyfavouriteking · 01/12/2012 19:32

procrastinating not everyone feels they need to discuss everything though. I didn't have the swine flu jab when pg, after doing lots of research including speaking with my gp 3 times, my MW, my best friend who is a doctor and had 2 children during swine flu outbreaks and several other sources recommended.

I however did not go round telling people why they shouldn't or my reasoning. If asked I would. but tnh you get a bit bored of the 'if you loved your child you would' attitude from up thread.

Maybe this women has had enough as well, if she is anti vac. Not everything is other peoples business.

Procrastinating · 01/12/2012 19:42

I am terrible for spouting my beliefs, if I got 'if you loved your child you would' I would happily argue my case. True, not everyone is like this, thank god.

My last baby was just before swine flu, I looked into it and I wouldn't have had the vaccine either brady.

bradywasmyfavouriteking · 01/12/2012 19:43

TBH depends on my mood. Some days (like today) i could argue the point.

Other days, I can't be arsed. Xmas Grin

kilmuir · 01/12/2012 19:58

YANBU. pathetic

bradywasmyfavouriteking · 01/12/2012 19:59

Kilmuir have Wine and a Xmas Grin

thebody · 01/12/2012 20:05

Hi havnt read whole thread so apologies but want to share my younger dd had whooping cough as a 3 week old baby,, caught it off me and her 3 older siblings but we had all been vaccinated.

She was very ill and it was very scary. Her face was navy blue to purple during the attacks of coughing, these happened at least 6 times a day.

Its a horrible condition.
