to think that a salad box is a perfectly normal thing for a 3yo to eat?

I took DD to subway today as we were out Xmas shopping and needed to stop for a bite to eat.

She asked for a salad box with lettuce, cucumber, peppers, gerkins, tomato and grated cheese..

So we sat down to eat and the woman sat opposite passed comment on what DD was eating... something along the lines of how strange to see such a young child eating a salad.

I though it was a very strange comment but just smiled and carried on eating dinner with DD.

AIBU to think a salad is a normal thing for a 3yo to eat?

salad with something is normal

whould want something a bit more filling with it though

sausagesandwich34 · 29/11/2012 16:28

would!!! damn you fingers

Some0ne · 29/11/2012 16:29

YABU, in my experience. No 3 year old I've known would eat salad.

bamboostalks · 29/11/2012 16:29

tbh, I am surprised to see anyone in Subway. I think it is very expensive and the food is truly nasty. Very cheap chicken and horrible bread.

TheCountessOlenska · 29/11/2012 16:30

Yes normal to me, although not that filling - I used to eat those when doing the Atkins diet!

MolotovCocktail · 29/11/2012 16:30

YANBU.

As long as your LO has a balance of protein, carbs, etc, what difference does it make? You'd not bat an eyelid at say, a ham salad sandwich, so what's the problem in meat/ protein alternative, salad and bread served separately?

Pancakeflipper · 29/11/2012 16:31

Normal as far as I am aware

but my greedy kids would need something with it to fill their tums ( but we'd not have the grated cheese as one of them cannot have dairy) so it would be followed by cake

sausagesandwich34 · 29/11/2012 16:32

you don't get bread witha salad box

greensnail · 29/11/2012 16:35

Seems normal to me, my 3 year old often chooses salad when we're out. . My local sandwich s gnp generally gives me the filing on a plate for my 2 year old, so usually ham and salad- theb puts the roll in a bag for me to use at home!

claraschu · 29/11/2012 16:36

It's great that she eats salad. Are you bragging? I think you should be bragging if you aren't, and I bet that woman today was impressed.

puds11 · 29/11/2012 16:37

How strange! My DD loves fruit salad boxes.

ChunkyPickle · 29/11/2012 16:37

I don't think that's unusual - DS would happily eat all of that and then steal half of what I was eating and tuck away most of a cookie for pudding...

vodkaanddietirnbru · 29/11/2012 16:42

neither of mine would let any of that near them except maybe the cheese - have never persuaded them to eat salad stuff and they are 6 and 9 - YABU!

Was she pleasantly surprised, or unpleasantly surprised? It's not clear.

Anyway, it's definitely not weird to see children eat salad.

WandaDoff · 29/11/2012 16:46

DS1 would have ate that at 3.

My other two, no chance.

MadameCreeper · 29/11/2012 16:46

Yabu! salad is quite normal but a box!!

mollymole · 29/11/2012 16:47

When my son was around 4 his favourite treat was a restaurant where you chose 5 spoons of food
1 of a protien and 4 of different salads from a selection offered
he called it the 'eating everything you want shop'
then he had a glass of FIZZY POP !!!!

MadameCreeper · 29/11/2012 16:48

Apologies, I had visions of a child chowing down on a Riverford delivery box Grin

Hulababy · 29/11/2012 16:49

Sounds fine to me and I know several children who will happily tuck into a bowl of salad.

nannyl · 29/11/2012 16:52

YANBU

some old woman commented on my ex charges in sainsburys.... they were shocked that the children knew the names of vegatables (courgettes and broccoli) and couldnt believe they were actually planning to eat them

[me being the kind nanny i was let my charges each choose a vegatable each for tea]

Janeatthebarre · 29/11/2012 16:57

I can't see why it would be 'strange'. Maybe she has fussy children or grandchildren and assumes all children are like that.

PhallicGiraffe · 29/11/2012 16:57

Sorry but eating a box is weird for anyone. Was it cardboard or plastic? Quite hard to digest.

MrsMushroom · 29/11/2012 17:00

My DD will eat raw carrot and cucumber...has done since she ate solids....but she'd not touch lettuce and onion etc. It IS unusual imo.

Molehillmountain · 29/11/2012 17:03

Absolutely fine for any child to enjoy salad, of course, but ime not usual. I don't think I've cone across more than one or two children, let alone three year olds who would choose it. It depends on the tone the lady used.
